?956 S cCttco«t We, the Editors, are proud to present the first edition of the So- -Wo to the students and faculty of Southwood High. We have worked long and hard and we sincerely hope that this yearbook will meet with your approval. We would like to thank all the faculty, students, and friends who helped us to make this book possible. We, the Junior Publications Committee dedicate Volume I of the 1956 So- -Wo to Mrs. H. M. Branton, one whom we truly love and respect. In every school there is a quiet power. This year we were fortunate in having such a power in the person of Mrs. Branton. Her keen interest in our activities and her untiring faith in the work to- wards our annual have made us realize how fortunate we are. In this way we show to you, dear Mrs. Branton, our sincere appreciation. A true friend is the greatest of all Blessings. La Rochefoucauld MR. P. E. The community extends over the center of Lenoir County and embraces some of the county ' s most fertile and productive soil. Lenoir County was the first county, in the United States, to complete consolidation of all the white schools. This, within itself, was a great achievement and one in which the Southwood Community was proud to play a part. Originally this was not Southwood Community but a group of smaller communities, which were as follows: Maple Grove, Lynwood, McGowan, Millbranch, Coahoma, Wood- in gton and Maple Cypress. With the coming of consolidation plans, the good people, of these communities, joined to form what is now the Southwood Community and selected the site to form what is now the Southwood School. The school was first known as Wood- ington, and was changed to its present name. The word Southwood was conceived by Mr. G. F. Loftin. He took South from Southwest and Wood from Woodington and com- bined these two words. One-half of the site upon which the school is located was given by Mr. G. F. Loftin. Lenoir County purchased the additional campus. The first building was a two story one, composed of thirteen rooms. In the space of a few years, in 1936, four additional class- rooms were added, and in 1946, a modern cafeteria, Home Economics, Agriculture and shop rooms were enclosed in a beautiful, new modern structure. Ten more rooms were added in 1954. The doors of Southwood School opened in 1926. Mr. Paul Packs served as principal and with him were twelve teachers. In 1928 the first class graduated; only nine in number. Mr. H. H. Bullock became principal in 1929 and serving with him were twelve teachers. In 1933 Mr. John Winfield assumed the role of principal with a staff of thirteen teachers. Mr. James Barbee became principal in 1937 and worked with sixteen teachers. Mr. George Warren accepted the principalship in 1938 and had a staff of fourteen teachers. Mr. Warren served as principal until 1948. The faculty in 1955 was made up of twenty- nine teachers. In 1926 the school enrollment was 436, in 1954 it was more than 700. Many noted community servants have given of their time and effort to the upbuild- ing of this institution. The first local school board was composed of: G. F. Loftin, E. L. Rouse, John Gooding, Clyde Dudley, and J. J. Harper. Other community leaders who have served with distinction are: Blackledge Harper, Roland Vause, David Williams, Keith Williams. Jarmon Becton, Adair Kennedy, and Albert Johnson. . The county, too, has profited by the good leadership this community has supplied. Will Becton and Forrest Waller have given their service as members of The Lenoir County Board of Education, rendering many years of valuable wisdom. The county, school, and community are indebted to other educational leaders whose wisdom and experience have guided with dignity the minds and efforts of those here at Southwood. These persons are: E. E. Sams, retired superintendent; Miss Virginia James, former supervisor; H. H. Bullock, present superintendent; and Miss Merle Scott, present supervisor. The potential of this community has been touched barely, and knowing this, the people look forward, with eager anticipation, to the progress the future holds. 0U t o£ 955 OFFICERS CLASS ROLL Left to right: Neal Wilcox, Edna Blizzard, Doris Kelley, Carol Johnson, Carolyn Reynolds, Betty John- son, Carol Rouse and Willie Lee Merritt.
