OUTSTANDING HONORS 1 1. Kathy Adcock and Kevin Duty were chosen for the Optomist Club Youth Appreciation Week . This honorary organization selects and recognizes two exemplary Senior students from each school as representatives of their school and peers. Students who are chosen for this award are honored publicly and awarded a scholarship at a banquet. Teacher recommen- dation with concurrence of administration and Senior counselor recommendation on criteria of grades, school honors, activities, and religious or civic involvement are required for this honor. 2. A similar honorary organization is the Op- timist Club Youth in Government Day . This award has the same requirements as Youth Appreciation Week but only one exemplary student is selected. This past year Dan Medlin was chosen for this award as District Attorney. 3. Russ Penick received the National Cheerleading Association Mascot Award. There are only four of these awards given in the nation. In order to acquire this award Russ was evaluated for a week on acting, spirit leading, and his cooperation with the cheerleaders. He also received several Superior ribbons at Cheerleading Camp which was at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. 26 f Honors Roundup 84

SENATOR HDNORQ SOUTHWDOD '84 Roundup 2 1. As Mr. Hennigan looks on, Senator J. Bennet Johnston con- gratulates Kevin Duty on his scholastic achievement. Kevin is Southwood's 1984 National Merit Semi-Finalist. 2. Caddo School Board President, Jerry Nelson, presents the Honest and Integrity Award to Cindy Mondello and Lance McDowell. This award is presented each year to an outstand- ing junior boy and girl at Southwood by the Southern Hills Masonic Lodge 364 F 84 AM. 3. Winston Howard was chosen for the Daughters of American Revolution Award. One who receives this award exhibits the qualities of leadership, dependability, service, and patriotism. Honors f 25

1. Damon McCoy was selected by the Shreveport Journal as 1983 High School Athlete of the Year. Last summer, McCoy lowered his 400 meter freestyle time to 3:55.8 - a performance that ranked 21st in the nation. He went to Europe in February to swim as a member of the National United States Touring Team. The last week in June he will be swimming in the Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. ' 2. Joe Rasco and Rick Hammer were the outstanding players chosen for the All-State Football Team. Rasco was also chosen for MVP All-District, All-Caddo-Bossier, All-City, and Honorable Mention All-American. He rushed 1,688 yards, made 17 touchdowns, and carried the ball 306 times in the 1983- 84 football season. His longest run was 91 yards and his most yardage was 250 in one game. 3. Rick Hammer was elected First Barefoot All-State Kicker. His longest field goal was 42 yards and most kickoffs went into the endzone. He was starting wide receiver and made several touchdowns. 9OUTHWOOD'S FINEST
