DR. SHERMAN G. WAGGONER To you, Dr. Sherman G. Waggoner, former principal of Southwood High School, we proudly and respectfully dedicate the i965 edition of the Lance. Your guidance during Southwood's first two years will never be forgotten by faculty or students. You have held the love and respect of students while guiding them. Dr. Waggoner received his A.B. at Ball State Teachers College, and his Nl.A. and Ph.D. at Iowa State University. He served as teacher, principal, and superintendent at several different high schools and colleges. Like all well-rounded individuals Dr. Waggoner has developed interests in many fields. Some of these include watching baseball and basketball games, gardening, and barbecuing his favorite dish. In this your year of retirement from service in public education vve, representing all classes and graduates, take this oppontunity to show our appreciation. Your guidance and understanding have earned for you a place of highest esteem in all our hearts. ' ION E-' .' BONNIE HUM'MEL MRS. HELEN GRAHAM 5 PRINCIPAL Southwood High School is now in its third year. The effectiveness of any school is determined by the bond of understanding between students, teachers, and the community. No system of schooling or of rearing children at home can be con- sidered any longer as a little local game. The world is its criterion. The next generation will be its iustification. We strive to make Southvvood High School a place, where students may determine their interest fields and then develop these areas to the fullest. Our aim and goal is to develop a more varied curriculum-one that will serve more students to a better degree. The obiective of education today may be stated as the Seven R's, Reading, 'Riting, 'Rithmetic, Reasoning, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, and Realization of the importance of achieving worthy goals and purposes. lt is my earnest hope, that the students, faculty, and community work toward a common end to achieve the above stated policy.
