Cullen Building In 1910, the year J. Frank Dobie was editor of the Sou ' wester, the Main Building celebrated its tenth birthday. At that time the building boasted three stories and a basement, a gymnasium with all the modern attachments, spacious library rooms, Y.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., and literary society halls, a magnificent auditorium, elaborate offices and reception parlors and publication rooms. But, according to the 1910 yearbook, (in a memorable, though perhaps overdone quote), the most magnificent thing about this building is its Memorial Dome, sixty-five feet square, with wings extending from every side. This dome is not a tinseled plate reflecting only rain-bow colors. It is the Westminster Abbey of Texas Methodism, sacred for whom it shall forever memorialize, grand for what it stands, and sublimely beautiful for its architecture and design. There is nothing like it in America. In it the aesthetic and the material are happily blended. Many changes were made when the building was renovated in 1977 by the Cullen Foundation and renamed in memory of Roy and Lillie Cul- len, but it is still the main building on campus, providing classrooms and offices for the Adminis- tration. Perhaps most important, though, is the fact that it has become the symbol of Southwest- ern University, and as such, it deserves a promi- nent place in our memories and in a book repre- senting the University.
