Southwestern University ' s campus has been called one of Texas ' most beautiful and best- planned college facilities. Located in a residential area on the eastern edge of the city, the 31 buildings situated on 500 acres supply an unusually fine environment for living and learning. The Administration Building, completed in 1900, has been renovated through grants made by the Cullen Foundation. Following the official opening and dedication on October 14, 1977, it was renamed The Roy and Lillie Cullen Building in memory of the late, Roy and Lillie Cullen, distinguished citizens and exemplary philanthropists of Texas. Both the Cullen Building and the Mood-Bridwell Hall, erected in 1908, are included in the Federal Registry of Historic Sites. Mood Hall, named for Dr. Francis A. Mood, first regent of the University, was renovated and restored with grants from the J. S. Bridwell Foundation of Wichita Falls, and the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation, Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The building was formally reopened and dedicated in October of 1978, with the name of Mood-Bridwell Hall. These two buildings house administrative and faculty offices and classrooms. In the center of the campus stands the Bishops Memorial Union, built in 1958, a popular campus meeting place housing student and faculty lounges, a snack bar, bookstore, game rooms, student offices, the Union Theatre, conference rooms, publications offices, and the campus post office. It is named for the six United Methodist bishops who were either alumni or staff of Southwestern. Cody Memorial Library, one of the area ' s finest college libraries, contains more than 143,000 catalogued volumes and subscribes to some 500 periodicals and newspapers. The structure is a blend of classic and modern architecture; in 1966 a modern smooth limestone and glass building was constructed and connected to the original building which had been dedicated in 1939. The 1966 construction and renovation was made possible by a gift from the Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston, and gifts from friends of Mr. Herman Brown, a member of the University ' s Board of Trustees for many years. 20 Campus

Gmp iu The School of Fine Arts is housed in the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center, erected in 1956 and the gift of the late Mrs. Alma Thomas of Austin, a long-time trustee of the University. The three-story building contains a theatre, recital hall, art gallery, offices, studios, and practice rooms. Gifts from the Hobitzelle Foundation of Dallas in 1973 and 1978 have made possible the air conditioning of the building, the renovation of the theatre, art studios, and recital hall, and the installation of safety equipment and of access facilities for the physically impaired. Facing the Cody Memorial Library across the center campus is the Lois Perkins Chapel, a semi-Gothic structure of native limestone, seating 580, where weekly chapel services and other events of religious nature are held. The chapel was erected in 1950 by a gift from the late Mr. J. J. Perkins of Wichita Falls, and is named in honor of Mrs. Perkins, an alumna of the University. The chapel was completely renovated through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Charles Prothro of Wichita Falls, to honor her mother, Mrs. Perkins. Mr. Prothro served on the board of Trustees for 30 years, and as its chairman for 11 of those years. Students take their meals in the University Commons, one of the most architecturally interesting buildings on the campus. Completed in 1966, the Commons features a circular main dining room and includes student and faculty lounges and dining rooms and the University ' s Board Room. Jim West Gymnasium, seating 800 and providing facilities for athletics, physical education, and recreational activities, was erected in 1941 and completely renovated in 1974 through gifts from the J. M. West Corporation of Houston. The Fondren-Jones Science Hall furnishes classroom and laboratory facilities for the University ' s curriculum in the sciences. The original building was completed in 1954 as a gift from Mrs. W. W. Fondren of Houston. With gifts from the Houston Endowment Foundation, Inc. of Houston, the building was completely renovated during 1980 - 81 and furnished with the best in modern equipment to the science program. Formerly called the Fondren Science Hall, the building was opened and rededicated in the fall of 1981. The new name, the Fondren- Jones Science Hall, recognizes the long friendship between Jesse H. Jones, founder of the Houston Endowment Inc., and Southwestern University. 22 Campus
