Since that time, her presence has been felt continuously by the entire university community. Her ideas have had a significant impact on the students and administration with whom she has been associated. In May, we learned of her decision to move on and develop her whole person concept of counseling in another setting. Even as we know she will be missed, we wish her the best of luck in her new venture. The 1984 Sou ' Wester is dedicated to Dr. Barbara Hinson Brightwell. This is one small way of saying thanks for all she has done. il mX !sm, JioMnidopL, Robert Lee Galloway Editor Julia Elizabeth Tunnell Assistant Editor Dedication 19 Southwestern University ' s campus has been called one of Texas ' most beautiful and best- planned college facilities. Located in a residential area on the eastern edge of the city, the 31 buildings situated on 500 acres supply an unusually fine environment for living and learning. The Administration Building, completed in 1900, has been renovated through grants made by the Cullen Foundation. Following the official opening and dedication on October 14, 1977, it was renamed The Roy and Lillie Cullen Building in memory of the late, Roy and Lillie Cullen, distinguished citizens and exemplary philanthropists of Texas. Both the Cullen Building and the Mood-Bridwell Hall, erected in 1908, are included in the Federal Registry of Historic Sites. Mood Hall, named for Dr. Francis A. Mood, first regent of the University, was renovated and restored with grants from the J. S. Bridwell Foundation of Wichita Falls, and the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation, Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The building was formally reopened and dedicated in October of 1978, with the name of Mood-Bridwell Hall. These two buildings house administrative and faculty offices and classrooms. In the center of the campus stands the Bishops Memorial Union, built in 1958, a popular campus meeting place housing student and faculty lounges, a snack bar, bookstore, game rooms, student offices, the Union Theatre, conference rooms, publications offices, and the campus post office. It is named for the six United Methodist bishops who were either alumni or staff of Southwestern. Cody Memorial Library, one of the area ' s finest college libraries, contains more than 143,000 catalogued volumes and subscribes to some 500 periodicals and newspapers. The structure is a blend of classic and modern architecture; in 1966 a modern smooth limestone and glass building was constructed and connected to the original building which had been dedicated in 1939. The 1966 construction and renovation was made possible by a gift from the Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston, and gifts from friends of Mr. Herman Brown, a member of the University ' s Board of Trustees for many years. 20 Campus L, i|j Hi j|j j|| || W lisi ien ■:;;;;: iiii nil Campus 21 Gmp iu The School of Fine Arts is housed in the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center, erected in 1956 and the gift of the late Mrs. Alma Thomas of Austin, a long-time trustee of the University. The three-story building contains a theatre, recital hall, art gallery, offices, studios, and practice rooms. Gifts from the Hobitzelle Foundation of Dallas in 1973 and 1978 have made possible the air conditioning of the building, the renovation of the theatre, art studios, and recital hall, and the installation of safety equipment and of access facilities for the physically impaired. Facing the Cody Memorial Library across the center campus is the Lois Perkins Chapel, a semi-Gothic structure of native limestone, seating 580, where weekly chapel services and other events of religious nature are held. The chapel was erected in 1950 by a gift from the late Mr. J. J. Perkins of Wichita Falls, and is named in honor of Mrs. Perkins, an alumna of the University. The chapel was completely renovated through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Charles Prothro of Wichita Falls, to honor her mother, Mrs. Perkins. Mr. Prothro served on the board of Trustees for 30 years, and as its chairman for 11 of those years. Students take their meals in the University Commons, one of the most architecturally interesting buildings on the campus. Completed in 1966, the Commons features a circular main dining room and includes student and faculty lounges and dining rooms and the University ' s Board Room. Jim West Gymnasium, seating 800 and providing facilities for athletics, physical education, and recreational activities, was erected in 1941 and completely renovated in 1974 through gifts from the J. M. West Corporation of Houston. The Fondren-Jones Science Hall furnishes classroom and laboratory facilities for the University ' s curriculum in the sciences. The original building was completed in 1954 as a gift from Mrs. W. W. Fondren of Houston. With gifts from the Houston Endowment Foundation, Inc. of Houston, the building was completely renovated during 1980 - 81 and furnished with the best in modern equipment to the science program. Formerly called the Fondren Science Hall, the building was opened and rededicated in the fall of 1981. The new name, the Fondren- Jones Science Hall, recognizes the long friendship between Jesse H. Jones, founder of the Houston Endowment Inc., and Southwestern University. 22 Campus Campus 23 Cou pu ) Martin Ruter Hall was erected in 1955 in honor of Martin Ruter, pioneer Methodist missionary and educator. Funds for the building were provided by the Central Texas, Southwest Texas, and Texas Conferences of the United Methodist Church. The Field House houses the Student Development Center which includes offices for health education, career development, personal counseling and testing. The Sid Richardson Physical Education Center, dedicated September 25, 1976, was made possible through a gift from the Sid W. Richardson Foundation of Fort Worth. McCullough Hall was made possible through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McCollough of Fort Worth. Located on the east wing of McCollough Hall is Laura Kuykendall Hall. It is a women ' s residence hall erected in 1926 and completed remodeled and air conditioned in 1967. It is named in honor of the late Laura Kuykendall, for many years dean of women of the University. Directly east of this hall is Kurth Residence Hall for women. It was completed in 1962 and named in honor of the late Mr. E. L. Kurth, and alumnus, benefactor, and long time trustee of the University. 24 Campus Campus 25 CaMpUJ) Moody-Shearn Hall is one of two residence halls making up a complex occupying the northwest corner of the campus. The halls were put into use in 1966. A gift of the Moody Foundation of Galveston, Moody- Shearn was named in honor of Mr. John Shearn, an early graduate of Rutersville College, one of the parent schools of Southwestern University, and in honor of Mr. William Lewis Moody, Jr. Herman Brown Hall is the second residence hall in the complex, which features exterior corridors and private courtyards. Both halls provide accomodations in four-student suites. Construction of Herman Brown Hall was made possible by a matching gift from the Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston, and the generous gifts of Mr. Herman Brown, who served on the University Board of Trustees for 20 years. The Kyle E. White Religious Activities Center, erected in 1956, provides modern and specialized facilities for classes and programs in religious education. The building was made possible through a gift from Mrs. Kyle E. White of Anahuac, in memory of her husband. f : 26 Campus . Campus 27 CoJMjpuA The McCook-Crain Clinic, erected in 1953 in memory of two alumni, Lieutenant Charles W. McCook and Mr. E. L. Crain, houses the University Relations offices including information service s, publications, special events, and alumni affairs. The International House, formerly the home of University presidents, is a residence for students interested in academic and cultural affairs in other countries. The President ' s Home, overlooking the Kurth Golf Course, was a gift of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Turner of Houston and was given to the University to honor former President and Mrs. Durwood Fleming. The campus has been beautified through several gifts including that of the late Mr. Neely G. Landrum and Mr. James N. Landrum of Dallas, which provided funds to construct the Landrum Memorial Fountain and mall in honor of their daughter and sister, Mrs. Marguerite Landrum Williams. The late Mr. Neely Landrum also supplied the campus sprinkler system so important in maintaining the beauty of the campus. 28 Campus Campus 29 GojAn (JU) Located on the western portion of the campus are four fraternity houses which house men. Each house is the center of fraternity activities, and is the site of many social events during the year. They all contain living areas, kitchens, dining area, recreational areas. These buildings house Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, Iota Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Texas Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and Alpha Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. George Orwell perceived it as a year to rewrite history. We have tried to change, but we have kept those traditions which made Southwestern great. This has been a year of great stride for the University and hopefully for you as well. The 1984 Sou ' Wester was put together for you to remember these times at Southwestern. Words alone cannot express my gratitude to those who helped me with this project. Anita Brown, Greg Caudell, Michelle Vanecek, Dean Brightwell, Dean Swift, Traci Datallo, David Fisher, Rhonda Radford, George Hutchin- son, Kristen Radford, Nancy Seiler, Ken Poole, Lawrence Thorne, Sarah Berthold, Karen Dailey, Alison Smith, Lynda Lawer, and Lori Miller helped me immensely. Special thanks go to Barbara Thomas, Faye Hubbard, and Marty Curtis for allowing me to have access to the New Service ' s publications and photographs. Also, I must thank Mary Beth Karr, Gayle Sampley, Virginia Eubanks, Kathy McDonough, and Julie Tunnell. Without these people, the 1984 Sou ' Wester would not have been possible. For everything, there is a season; a time to meet and a time to be known, a time to strive and a time to achieve, a time to entertain and a time to enjoy, a time to work and a time to play, a time to be alone and a time to be together, a time for tradition and a time for change, a time to begin and a time to end. 1984, a time to remember! $ JjaMccOGf Rob Galloway 1984 Sou ' Wester Editor Closing 135 - .
