Southwestern University Gustave Mahler and k His Vienna The Brown Symposium held February 3-5 of this year was implemented by Dr. Ellsworth Peterson of the School of Fine Arts. Composer Gustav Mahler and his 19th century Vienna was the topic of discussion. The Southwestern community and visitors representing eighteen different states had the privilege of hearing lectures from Dr. Alessandra Comini, an authority on Gustav Klimt and Viennese art. Dr. Comini spoke about the effect and significance of art in Mahler ' s Vienna and Alma Mahler (Gustav Mahler ' s wife) and her Vienna. Dr. Donald Mit- chell of England, an expert on Gustav Mahler ' s compositions, spoke on Mahler ' s ' Oriental ' Symphony — its Texas, forms and philosophy, and the legacies, prophecies and innovations of Mahler; and Dr. Carl B. Schorske, an historian, opened the Symposium with his lecture Gustav Mahler ' s Vienna. He also discussed the social ex- perience and artistic evolution in Vienna because of the works of Gustav Mahler and Gustav Klimt. Dr. Shorske, the author of Fm-de-siecle Vienna, Politics and Culture, won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for this book. A special part of the three day symposium was the performance of Maureen Forrester who gave a recital where she interpreted some of the work of Mahler. She is one of the leading contraltos of the day. The Viennese dinner, on Thursday, February 4, was highlighted with Southwestern ' s own artists: | ' | i ji i Drusilla Huffmaster, pianist; Virginia Dupuy, Mezzosoprano (with her accompanist, David Garvey); i L I , Ji ' itll) and the University Chorale conducted by Mr. Kenny Sheppard.
