STUDENT Registration It ' s the welcome wagon! Once again SU opens its gates while almost 1000 people rush from prof to prof hoping to get some semblance of a degree. OK, it ' s not that hard to get the classes you want. About the only classes that close are English, and those are offered year round anyway. So don ' t panic, take your time . . . Aeronautical Space Engineer- ing . . . Aeronautic Space Engineering . . . Hi! We ' re the welcome wagon! Stick around until green cards can go through If you can spit out a comparison between US and Sardini j | and do a cartwheel at the same time, then this class is for yo 1 j Sunday. Well Leigh-Anne got all the classes she wanted. — And now she gets to pay for them! OK, so science isn ' t everybody ' s favorite. ONLY 6 hours this semester!! Rob Lee pleads for independent study. Academics Isn ' t That Why We ' re Here? Because academics are stressed at Southwestern, students take studying as a matter of course. Although the library is one of the most popular places for studying, there are several spots around campus that make the most of sunshine. Science students enjoy studying rat tissue. Steve Gardner, President of the Inside the Cranium Society chooses t ij study without his thongs. Jean Janssen learned that geophysics wasn ' t so funny afte ; the first test. So Mike Middleton finally got a good idea. X Yes, folks, it ' s Casey Cowan in the library. David feels good after a couple of hours in the library. Harry Moore could only spare 1 125 of a second for a picture. 11 The Commons People Don ' t Just Eat There On campus students have a marvelous chance to congregate at 8, 12, and 5 in the COMMONS. If you don ' t chit, you chat. If you don ' t eat you ' ll probably live longer. But we can ' t sell Saga Food Service short, they ' re always coming up with new ideas on how to serve students (and turkey). Deborah Vardiman gets hay fever from daisies. Robert, Barry and Doug pose with local mutant. And the secret potion has turned Dr. Jekyl into Mr. Hyde in a matter of seconds. Kathy and Eric seem to be enjoying the conversation more than the food. 12 When the Commons serves out- side they go all out. Remember the mile long sandwich? And all that delicious red punch? Those tender young ' sausages ' and the potatoe salad that crunched? — yam — yam -- The Bishops Union — The Union. Some call it the Sub, some prac- tically call it- home. The center of most activities for SU students, the Union provides that spark that is so uniquely Southwestern. Program after program, activity after activity, new ideas spring from the minds working together to bring the student body something new and exciting each week. rfp 1) From Top to Bottom: David Alexander — Union President, Linda Burke — Music and Dances, Pat Vidaurri — Union Cafe, Amy Tatum — Cultural and Ethnic Events, Joel Vera — Outdoor Recreation, Henry Robinson — Indoor Recreation, Anne Young — Films and Television, Ann Rudloff — Exhibits, Rosanna Lapham — Personal Skills and Development, Debbie Marin — Secretary. 2) Ben Sherman, Assistant Dean for Student Activities, is struck by lightning in mid-performance. 3) Henry Robinson — just one of the Union Managers. 4) Clockwise: David Alexander — Union President, Dwayne Stevens — Outdoor Recreation, Tim Murray — Indoor Recreation, Kathy Moore — Outdoor Recreation, Debbie Marin — Secretary, Jannae Tunnell — Personal Skills and Development, Amy Tatum — Cultural and Ethnic Events, Eric Leidlein — Films and Television, Ann Rufloff — Exhibits, Linda Burk — Music and Dances. The Greeks RUSH Southwestern University Gustave Mahler and k His Vienna The Brown Symposium held February 3-5 of this year was implemented by Dr. Ellsworth Peterson of the School of Fine Arts. Composer Gustav Mahler and his 19th century Vienna was the topic of discussion. The Southwestern community and visitors representing eighteen different states had the privilege of hearing lectures from Dr. Alessandra Comini, an authority on Gustav Klimt and Viennese art. Dr. Comini spoke about the effect and significance of art in Mahler ' s Vienna and Alma Mahler (Gustav Mahler ' s wife) and her Vienna. Dr. Donald Mit- chell of England, an expert on Gustav Mahler ' s compositions, spoke on Mahler ' s ' Oriental ' Symphony — its Texas, forms and philosophy, and the legacies, prophecies and innovations of Mahler; and Dr. Carl B. Schorske, an historian, opened the Symposium with his lecture Gustav Mahler ' s Vienna. He also discussed the social ex- perience and artistic evolution in Vienna because of the works of Gustav Mahler and Gustav Klimt. Dr. Shorske, the author of Fm-de-siecle Vienna, Politics and Culture, won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for this book. A special part of the three day symposium was the performance of Maureen Forrester who gave a recital where she interpreted some of the work of Mahler. She is one of the leading contraltos of the day. The Viennese dinner, on Thursday, February 4, was highlighted with Southwestern ' s own artists: | ' | i ji i Drusilla Huffmaster, pianist; Virginia Dupuy, Mezzosoprano (with her accompanist, David Garvey); i L I , Ji ' itll) and the University Chorale conducted by Mr. Kenny Sheppard. Professional artists who play the College circuit and deliver their talent across the nation, do more than just teach the students in the fine arts. They open doors for the students and spread their ideas to them. Students are also able to broaden their horizons and open their minds to events that are culturally stimulating. 1) Organist Norman Dello Joio and Dr. Ellsworth Peter- son. They give the students a chance to perform and develop their musical talents. Each ensemble is a different facet of the depart- ment of music. The groups range from a small symphony to a group who sings up-beat folk and sacred tunes. The common denominator, however, is the music itself and the students ' love for it. Southwestern ' s Chorale is the choir that sings classical music. This year the Chorale had the opportunity to sing a work by Nor- man Dello Joio, Hymns Without Words, who was a guest artist on the SU campus in the Fall of 1981. The Chorale also presented a medley from the Negro opera Porgy and Bess. In the spring of 1982 they performed the Brahms Requiem. Mr. Kenny Sheppard made his debut conducting the Chorale and SU ' s Sinfonietta simultaneously. The Extrordinaires is a select SU chorus dedicated to a lighthearted view of music which ranges from pop folk tunes to sacred work. They are accompanied by a combo. Each year they tour high schools, sing for SU gatherings, and act as student recruiters. Dr. Gary Warmink conducts the Extraordinaires. The SU Singers, under the direction of Mr. Peter Roussaki, is the music group that performs more often than any other choir on campus. Each Thursday morning the choir sings for the Chapel services. The big event for this group each year is the Christmas Candlelight Service. This year they presented A Day For Dancing by Lloyd P. Fautsch. The concentration of this group is the wor- ship of God through Music. Membership is open to the Student body. The instrumental ensembles are the Sinfonietta, the Symphonic Band and the Stage Band. The Sinfonietta, conducted by Dr. Ted Lucas, presented works by Johann Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Schoenberg. This would be the last time for The Dean of Fine Arts to conduct the orchestra. In the Spring of 1982, Mr. Kenny Shep- pard was given the position. The ensemble and the Chorale presented works from G. F. Handel, Joseph Haydn and Antonin Dvorak. The Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. George Nelson presented works by Robert Jager and Robert Russell Bennet. In the Fall they played Armenian Dances by Alfred Reed and Incidental Suite by Claude T. Smith in their Concert. Dr. Nelson ' s stage band is a swing band. They included Residual Fine Dance by Hooper and Blue Shoes by Tull in their repertoire for the 81-82 year. In the Spring they went on tour to San Antonio, Pearsall, and Uvalde playing to high school students and some city-wide functions. Many of the members of both of these ensembles collaborated for one hour of credit to be the musical support for Man of La Machai. This is only one way the Young ar- tists in the School of Fine Arts combine their talents. Sou ' wester Rachel Edwards — Copy 17, 16, lA ve I The SOU ' WESTER is a pictorial history of the students, faculty, and ad- ministration of Southwestern Universi- ty. The renovations of Ruter, the Fondren-Jones Science Hall, the Lois Perkins Chapel and the welcoming of a New President have made this a year of change and adjustment. Southwestern will continue to change and grow. Plans that have been on the drawing board and discussed in meeting after meeting will materialize in the years ahead. For now, however, a big thank you goes to the people who helped produce the 1982 SOU ' WESTER. Kathy Moore — Layout 57 Southwestern Magazine John Buchanan Editor: Southwestern Magazine The Dreams Of A Child Arthur D. Wilde had the dreams of a child Although he was near thirty-two. Some men dream of power and saving the day; He dreamed of spring showers in which he could play Or climbing a tower beside a still bay — It was awful, but what could he do? Arthur D. Wilde had the dreams of a child So he went to see Doctor McCann. The shrink said, You must lose the thoughts of a boy, So give up your trusts, your illusions destroy. Your life is but dust, there ' s no reason for joy; Realize this, and you ' ll dream like a man. Arthur D. Wilde lost the dreams of a child And he learned how to dream like a man. He dreamed about pain and the spilling of blood; He dreamed of the rain that caused terrible floods, And he cried out in shame, And he wished that he could Have the dreams of a child again. Mikal Trimm The Southwestern Magazine is a bi- annual anthology of photographs, poetry, prose, and graphic art submitted by SU students. The editor for the 1981-82 year (for his second consecutive year) was John Buchanan. He would like to extend his thanks to all of the people who sub- mitted their work. He is especially grateful to Susan Leidy, Assistant Editor, without whom he would never have been able to produce the magazine. The 1981-82 Season brought Southwestern The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman, Exit the King by Eugene Ionesco, and this year ' s musical, Man of La Mancha by Dale Wasserman. Solo Flights are one-act plays presented each year by senior directors. Solo Flights I consisted of The White Liars by Peter Schaffer directed by Carolyn Jobe, and The Respectable Prostitute by Jean Paul Sartre directed by Malcolm McQuoid. Solo Flights II was a series of three shows: Hello Out There by Saroyan directed by Edmound Fitzpatrick, Ludlow Fair, by Lansford Wilson, directed by Kathy Truman, and The Proposal by Anton Chekov directed by Emily Hardt. 1) The Man of La Mancha wants YOU.? 2) Exit the King — ers, Don Zirkel, Ken Lieck, and John Luce were trap- ped within the tightly knit web between the King and his wives. 3) The sly cast of The Little FoXes: Malcolm McQuoid, Cheryl White, Brian Neal, Bruce Reynolds, Mary Neva Pearce, Georgianne Bode, Emi- ly Hardt, Lucien Stavenhagen, David Inman and not pictured, Larry Ruffo. 4) A desert. 5) John Gould, the King, was driven to death by his young, whining wife (Casey Cowan) and his uncaring ex-wife (Paige McDaniel). 6) The Respectable Prostitute brought out a new side of Nick Phillips. 7) Susan Slagle and Malcolm McQuoid didn ' t always see eye to eye in Anton Chekov ' s The Proposal. 8) Casey holds David ' s head in place while his cousin looks on. 61 62 SPORTS W i?fil S „.. . v.. , S.U. A large part of living at Southwestern is ones participa- tion in these games which are organized by Don Heins — Direc- tor of Housing. A team that wins gets just another reason to go roll- ing and celebrate. But the intramural games don ' t consist of Pass the Orange. Shilling, Jr. Presidents have a way of including their own personality into their administra- tions, and President Shilling ' s will be no exception. The era of Shilling is now a part of Southwestern. After a very successful year, Southwestern ' s 13th Presi- dent and his administration have created a master plan that Southwestern will follow in the years to come. A program of excellence is in order to achieve na- tional recognition. If the present is any indication fo what is to come, Southwestern can expect expansion physically and spiritually under President Roy B. Shilling, Jr. 1) Newly inaugurated President Shilling poses with his daughter Nancy and his wife Margaret. 2) Former President Dr. Durwood Flemming, Mrs. I. J. Mc- Cook, Dr. I. J. Shilling, Jr. on the occasion of his inauguration. The President even received a letter of welcome from the President of the United States — Ronald Reagan. 145 Dr. Durwood Fleming, Dr. Roy B. When carpets are magically cleaned, when tables and chairs seem to set themselves up, when people aren ' t screaming in the morning because there is hot water, or when the greenery around campus ' Seems to take nature ' s course, you can bet that someone from Charley Ray ' s magnificent maintenance crew has been in or around the area. 148 1) Director of Mainteance — Mr. Charley Ray 2) Sitting: Daniel Munoz, Vic Williams, Joe LePage, Arman- do Robles, and Don Ayers.
