The goal was to investigate how meaning affects human experience and how human experience affects meaning in each of the three fields examined, Literature, Theology, and Anthropology.

Christmas was celebrated this year with the Candlelight Service held in the University Chapel. Later, students, families, and faculty, gathered in the Students Union ' s main lounge to share the Christmas spirit. 17

■■v, ;.;- Dr. Clifford Geertz, Professor of Social Science af Princeton, was the principle speaker in this year ' s Brown Symposium. Dr. Geertz began the Symposium this year with his talk on a new theory of culture that has recently come about in the social sciences. Dr. James Boone, Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Cornell University, lectured on the Literature of Anthropology. Dr. Steven Greenblatt, Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, spoke on the topic of The Word of God in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Dr. David Tracy, Professor of Philosophical Theology at the University of Chicago, discussed the Interpretation Theory: The Test Case of Religious Classics. 19 kfl
