SQU ' WESfER1980 The Southwestern University campus is a world in microcosm. Students, if they want, can meet the same challenges and opportunities as they will be meeting when they take their places in society. Serious study, religious and moral decisions, or just having fun together ... all prepare the student for the interaction with others, establishing and cementing relationships which will prove of value not only in the present decade but in the years to come. --««aR 3g g|$ itfl Southwestern is a special place in that the shaping of the character of the new decade can occur in as prosaic an event as an exchange of ideas over a meal in the Commons, a heated discussion in the classroom, or in activity as a member of a campus organization. Even on the playing fields in intramural athletics or in varsity competition, attitudes and values are established as students learn to win or lose with grace and good will. •O . . - ■f X ■■f I -wfe l Each student contributes to the overall personality of the student body that is Southwestern just as each individual contributes to the overall personality of society. Who knows but from our number may emerge a world leader or a scientist whose discoveries may change the world? Certainly each individual will have the potential for altering and bettering some aspect of life in the decades to come. As students we study and work and play hard. We are involved in life and in learning and in the excitement of the new decade. We look forward with confidence and high expectations. WE ARE THE EIGHTIES! km As soon as students arrived, the orientation leaders and residence hall staff were on hand to help the new students settle and become acquainted with their new surroundings. Then came the day of the lines. That ' s the day you waited in line to register, you waited in line for books in the bookstore, for your meal card, for your room assignment . . . • £ ' • 10 Finally Classes Began. The senate put on a carnival to acquaint the new and old students with some of the organizations on campus. The main attractions of the day were the mimes, co- starring some of our students. ■m 4, r a 1 • ' SL IV p i Jk $ r University pi for the campus Students usic 11 When it came to leisure activities (i.e. parties) you could always count on the fraternities to come up with something: from Reggae to Toga to many altered states of consciousness. 13 14 The House Councils also helped students get to know one another by giving study breaks. 15 Another activity sponsored by one ot the house councils, Ruter, was the blood drive. The drive was made twice this year in conjunction with the Central Texas Blood Bank. Any blood collected could be credited to the campus community or the students ' families. ' . i Christmas was celebrated this year with the Candlelight Service held in the University Chapel. Later, students, families, and faculty, gathered in the Students Union ' s main lounge to share the Christmas spirit. 17 Interpretation Hermeneutics Meaning and the Substance of H u r n a n E x pe r i e n ce The topic of Brown Symposium was, Interpretation: Meaning and the Substance of Human Experience. The goal was to investigate how meaning affects human experience and how human experience affects meaning in each of the three fields examined, Literature, Theology, and Anthropology. ■■v, ;.;- Dr. Clifford Geertz, Professor of Social Science af Princeton, was the principle speaker in this year ' s Brown Symposium. Dr. Geertz began the Symposium this year with his talk on a new theory of culture that has recently come about in the social sciences. Dr. James Boone, Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Cornell University, lectured on the Literature of Anthropology. Dr. Steven Greenblatt, Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, spoke on the topic of The Word of God in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Dr. David Tracy, Professor of Philosophical Theology at the University of Chicago, discussed the Interpretation Theory: The Test Case of Religious Classics. 19 kfl There were other interesting people who came to our campus ike, Jerry Rubins, the 60 ' s radical, Congressman J. J. Pickle, or Robert McAfee Brown, a distinguished poet. 20 Other people who came to Southwestern were, Wayne Holtzman, George M. Ricker, Akiro Endo of the Austin Symphony, A. Frank Smith, and Lady Bird Johnson. 21 ■vm With all these people, parties, and events on campus, we still had studying to do; and we did . . . everywhere. And yet while all these things were going on and all these interesting people came to our campus, classes went on. With the classes came those many hours of study and study we did . . . everywhere. 23 Classes . . . some were fun some were interesting some were hard some were easy and some were just there. fll - - lL.J lOJD-Luu, We thought the Science Hall deserved some special recognition. For non-science majors the building for all purposes didn ' t exist. On the other hand, this place was almost home for those students headed toward the fields of medicine or research. Parades, serenades, and guitar playing, were some of the things done during non-school hours. ' ■• ' ■-ia£ ' . . ■% • ■%, 28 It is one of the biggest activities on campus, involving slightly over half of the campus. W v; n 4 ?y -Si;, u V—L. 10 i ;■' . i I % 31 The Commons center of socializing (not to mention continental cuisine) was the information gathering center for the whole campus. Apart from all that, the Commons People (not to be confused with the common people ) put on banquets for Homecoming, Parents ' Weekend, and many other events. 32 When one ' s taste for extraordinary food couldn ' t be satisfied by the Commons or any of the fast food establishments around town, there was always RAMGRO! Or if one cared to partake while dining, POSSUM CREEK INN was a short eight miles away (which usually seemed like eighty on the way back). 33 34 After four long, sometimes fun and sometimes not so fun years the day of graduation arrives. 35 f SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY ' S volleyball team. The Bucs made it through the tough state play-offs and achieved a much deserved fourth place finish in the Southwest Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for women. Co-captains Tracy Strane, the team ' s best setter, and Jeanne Bulla, the team ' s most powerful spiker, led the team to a 27-21 record. Helping Strane and Bulla were Lyn Shelton, Mary Klar, and Debbie Hansen. Excellent servers Terry Gawlik and Tina LaFuente, the offensively explosive Alfia Vela, and contributors Sandra Lanzarotti and Terri Shelton helped make the year the finest in Southwestern volleyball history. 39 Standing: Jackson Pace, Kerry Mathews, Gary Wills, Ed Bell, John Scarborough, Mark Lee, Bryan Farny, Rodney Glasper, Jon Smith, Coach Paul Peak Kneeling: Kelly Bear Kalinec, Raymond Joyner, Russ Briggs, Rusty Segler (Co-Captain), Kenny Whitworth (Co-Captain), Michael Thompson, Rudy Williams Sitting: Joe Phillips, Mark Ander- son, Curtis Vick, Randy Moody, Lee Hardy The Southwestern Men ' s basketball team captured the imagination of Pirate supporters during the 1 979-80 season. Under the direction of Paul Peak, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics ' District Four Coach-of-the-Year, the Bucs earned a share of the Big State Conference title. Assisting Thompson were senior co-captains Rusty Segler and Kenny Whitworth. The smooth-shooting Whitworth was named to the Big State Conference ' s second team. • 42 43 The chief ingredients for fhe Bucs ' success this season were a strong defense, a balanced offense, and good front-line rebounders. Key defenders during the season were Ed Bell and Mark Anderson, while offensive sparks were provided by Jon Smith and Rodney Glasper. Rebounding was provided by aggressive Mark Lee, quick Rudy Williams, and steady Raymond Joyner. With coach Glada Munt at the helm, the women Pirates dominated opponents in regular season play and in several tournaments. The Lady Bucs won the Hardin- Simmons Tournament and made excellent showing at the George West and Tarleton Invitational tournaments. CD CO 00 CD in CD CX CD 45 The only disappointment in the Bucs 23-1 1 season was a heartbreaking one point loss in the Texas Association ot Intercollegiate Athletics tor Women play-otts. The squad did, however, end up as the fourth place team in the state. 46 The squad was led this season by the two high-scoring posts, Mary Klar and Jeanne Bulla. Risa Marshall and Captain Laura Dawson tossed in buckets from the outside while Loretta Deason took care of the ball handling duties. Beth Boyer was a key offensive substitute with the quick Lynette Saterfield being the top defensive substitute. Other main substitutes included Karen Foust and Debbie Hansen. 47 ■• ■' --■: ' ' ■: ' :: 48 Coach Mallon Stretch Run Practice Practice Practice . . . Slick-fielding Terrell Driskell received help from fellow infielders Randy Schaefer, Mike Leonard, Casey Triggs, and catcher Rick Erwin in giving the Pirates an outstanding defense. The 1 980 pitching staff was led by starters Terry Hulet and James Limmer, with help from strong relievers like Gordon Urbanek, Kelvin Blank, and Scott Terry. Mark Schieffer was also instrumental in the staff ' s success as he posted an earned run average of only 1.76. Despite the Bucs ' talent and determination, a severe mid-season slump set in and wrecked their chances at a conference title, dropping them to a fifth place finish. The team did, however, end up with a school record of 40 games won and was thus rewarded by being ranked in the top twenty teams in the Nation by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The 1 980 season also provided Southwestern with its ninth straight year of 30 or more baseball victories, while giving coach Jim Mallon his 300th career win in his ten years with the Pirates. The University of Texas Tech ± Baylor, Six Southwestern Wins 52 Hr This year ' s Pirate baseball team brought a lot of early season excitement to the Southwestern campus. Bryan Neal, a first team All Big State Conference selection, and Scott Terry, a second team choice, led the hot hittfng Bucs to early season victories over several powerful NCAA schools. The Bucs defeated the talent-laden University of Texas team, 5-4, and swept a two-game series against a strong Texas Tech squad, 8-4 and 7-1 . The Pirates also took three of four games from the powerful Baylor University. Many players assisted Neal and Terry with the 1 980 Pirate attack. Power hitters Gordon Urbanek and Terry Hulet helped lead the team to a phenomenal 61 home runs, while speed merchants Randy Smith and Dexter Saterfield kept constant pressure on opposing defenses with their quickness. Terrell Driskell and Tony Neuendorf also contributed to the Buc attack with their .300-plus batting averages. 53 - o CD i . j . m P ' 54 (L to R) Brad McCampbell, Clay Cornett, Pat McCurrin, Jerry Holmes, Tracy Baack, Coach James Cohagan P i r a t e G o f e r s  -. 55 Men ' s Basketball Results us OPPONENT THEM 71 East Texas Baptist 54 65 Texas Lutheran 67 77 St. Mary ' s University 58 87 Mary-Hardin Baylor 66 128 Huston-Tiliotson 63 . 87 St. Edward ' s 53 ■81 Texas Lutheran 75 107 Huston-Tiliotson 73 62 St. Mary ' s 64 i 83 St. Edward ' s 53 I 70 East Texas Baptist 62 j 94 Mary-Hardin Baylor 73 Conference Pfay-off: Southwestern — -79 is Lutheran — 81 First Round NAIA Play-offs: Southwestern — -69 i South West Texas — 90 Season Record: 23-11 Conference Record: 10-2 ■Women ' s Volleyball Results Sept. 13 Univ. of Texas 11-15,18-16,15-10 ■Oct. 19 Baylor U. 13-15,15-8,15-10 9-15,5-15 Oct. 19 WTSU 15-3,8-15,15-5 Sept. 15 Alvin Jr. Col. 15-8,13-15,15-6 Oct. 20 Sam Houston 2-15,7-15 Sept. 15 Lee Jr. Col. 15-4,15-10 Oct. 20 North Texas St. 10-15,13-15 Sept. 18 Texas Lutheran 15-9,13-15,11-15, Oct. 20 . The President serves as the chief liaison officer between the faculty, administration, and the student body as a whole. The Senate carries on its work through various committees and three permanent commissions. The Senate also selects one faculty member and one administrator each year to serve in an advisory capacity. Senate meetings are open to any member of the University community. 78 T h Lynda Lieberman David Alexander A great deal of what one learns at Southwestern occurs outside the classroom and cannot be measured by tests and reports. The Bishops Memorial Union attempts to create occasion for such valuable learning experiences for the entire campus community — students, faculty, administration, staff and alumni — through a program which offers social, recreational, academic, and cultural opportunities. This program is created on a partnership basis with all facets of the community in mind and is largely conducted by students. The policy making body of the Union is the Governing Board comprised of students, faculty, and staff. In 1874 Rev. Francis A. Mood obtained a charter for Southwestern University which was located in Georgetown. Dr. Mood is called the founder of Southwestern for which he served faithfully until his death in 1884. On the Campus of the thriving little school different organizations began to exist and among them were the Fraternities and Sororities. The first of these was the Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Fraternity which was founded in Southwestern University on November 28, 1 883, with six Charter Members: R. C. Porter, W. C. McKaney, T. L. Crow, W. E. Hawkins, E. W. Martin and E. Embree, Jr. Several years later the Texas Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity was -founded. On March 12, 1886 A. R. Johns, R. L. Penn, M. K. Pateman , A. J. Perkins, W. H. Anderson, J. B. Hawkins, Abonn Holt, J. E, Quarles, J. H; Williams, R. S. Carter and S. J. Thomas were granted the Charter, On October 12, 1886 Iverson B. Among the first of these was Lambda Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha which was granted its charter on May 1 3, 1 906. The Charter members were: Elizabeth Hardy, Bess Whittle, Ailie Barcas, Pauline Clark, Jean Whittle, Louise Gibson, Rosina Nelson, Rannie Collier, Myrtice Nelms, Lola Branson, Blossom Pittman, Irene Gammill, Edith Branson, Hazel Whittle, Katherine Fiser, Sunshine Dick- erson, Bes Bailey, Lena Mae Nelms, Ena Dent, and Clara Wellborn. The Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi was not granted its charter until February 1907, although this organization was the first 6n Southwestern Campus. Mary Mann, Madge Cooper Gladys Graves, Early Price, Gladys Snyder, Martha Sanders, Nannie B. Clamp, Mabel Taylor, Gene Daughtrey, Louise Bellford and Catherine Chessleer were the charter members. The local Xi Kappa was organized in Southwestern in 1 906 but was not chartered until May 1 , 1 908 as the Xi Kappa Chapter of Phi Mu. Thirteen girls were initiated as charter members: Annie Bankright, Mary Inez Coon, Ola Niece, Minnie Lee taulman; Mabel Grace (Daughterly, Mary Elizabeth Hanover, Jessie Sessions, Katherine Howard, Ailine Terrell Smith, Jimmie Smyth, Bertha McKee, Eula Mae Rollins, and JuliaMangum.
