HALLOWEEN Students put down their books to participate in the merry-making of Halloween. The annual apple-dunking contest was held again during dinner in the Commons, and contestants were able to show off their breath-holding abilities. A pumpkin-carving contest was also sponsored but many pumpkins were left rotting in the corners of rooms. LK open house was well- attended, with goblins roaming the halls. One never knew just what was around the corner, but gypsy fortune-tellers would inform you of your future . The annual Halloween dance, sponsored by the Union brought in a lot of crazy costumes, including a VD cell and a Killer Bee. The evening was irreverent, and provided students with an outlet for craziness.

COSMOLOGY COMES TO CAMPUS In October, the most significant event to happen at Southwestern was the Brown Symposium. This year, the subject was cosmology and it brought Dr. John Wheeler and Dr. Kip Thorne. The symposium dealt with such topics as black holes and the physics of the universe. It was a great success, and students debated the theories for weeks.

UP IN SMOKE-SNEED BURNS The word passed quickly through the campus- Sneed Hall had burned during the night. Were there any survivors? Did it burn all the way to the ground? Will it be rebuilt? Thankfully, no lives were lost, and everyone was safe. Apparently, faulty wiring in the upstairs bathroom was the cause. Many stopped by Sneed on their way to class to see if it really had burned. Some Sneedies lost many possessions, so the students started a collection for them. Hints for getting the smoke out of their clothes was common. Gold ' s Department Store opened so the Sneedies could get some clothes. Southwestern gave each girl to replace necessities. During the day, the women were relocated into the panhellenic and resource rooms of L.K. As for the fate of Sneed, no one is certain. The 24 rooms lost will be recovered with the renovation of the LK Annex. The Annex will be renamed McCullough Hall, with the second floor named Sneed Suite. But McCullough Hall will never recapture the home-like atmosphere of Sneed. 12
