Freshmen found the buildings, and upperclass males checked out the new females. Everyone settled down to a semester of hard partying and or studying. Freshmen discovered the phenomena of fraternity parties and quickly learned the social scene at Southwestern. People returned to their favorite haunts such as Adeline ' s and Possum Creek Inn. Rolling regained its popularity. Big G ' s became Frontier Hall over the summer, providing country-western music and Friday night kicker dancing. On Saturdays, Mr. Gatti ' s was the place to watch Saturday Night Live. Sooner or later, everybody went to Austin to discover a night life that Georgetown doesn ' t have. Cartoonfests were sponsored by the Spot committee, and we enjoyed seeing our old friends Bugs Bunny and the Roadrunner again. • ft rijSf, - . j£ •W - But the professors had other things in mind for the students to do. PLUS helped the freshmen learn how to study. Syllabi proved to be as puzzling and vague as ever, with corrections usually being made every two weeks. Returning students rediscovered the all-nighter and appreciated the fact that 7- 11 is open all night for munchies breaks. If you were lucky enough to have a teacher who contributed to the library test file or a student with old tests, then you at least had a fighting chance come test day. By midsemester, many students were wondering whatever prompted them to sign up for that course. - | AND TO STUDY COSMOLOGY COMES TO CAMPUS In October, the most significant event to happen at Southwestern was the Brown Symposium. This year, the subject was cosmology and it brought Dr. John Wheeler and Dr. Kip Thorne. The symposium dealt with such topics as black holes and the physics of the universe. It was a great success, and students debated the theories for weeks. HALLOWEEN Students put down their books to participate in the merry-making of Halloween. The annual apple-dunking contest was held again during dinner in the Commons, and contestants were able to show off their breath-holding abilities. A pumpkin-carving contest was also sponsored but many pumpkins were left rotting in the corners of rooms. LK open house was well- attended, with goblins roaming the halls. One never knew just what was around the corner, but gypsy fortune-tellers would inform you of your future . The annual Halloween dance, sponsored by the Union brought in a lot of crazy costumes, including a VD cell and a Killer Bee. The evening was irreverent, and provided students with an outlet for craziness. UP IN SMOKE-SNEED BURNS The word passed quickly through the campus- Sneed Hall had burned during the night. Were there any survivors? Did it burn all the way to the ground? Will it be rebuilt? Thankfully, no lives were lost, and everyone was safe. Apparently, faulty wiring in the upstairs bathroom was the cause. Many stopped by Sneed on their way to class to see if it really had burned. Some Sneedies lost many possessions, so the students started a collection for them. Hints for getting the smoke out of their clothes was common. Gold ' s Department Store opened so the Sneedies could get some clothes. Southwestern gave each girl to replace necessities. During the day, the women were relocated into the panhellenic and resource rooms of L.K. As for the fate of Sneed, no one is certain. The 24 rooms lost will be recovered with the renovation of the LK Annex. The Annex will be renamed McCullough Hall, with the second floor named Sneed Suite. But McCullough Hall will never recapture the home-like atmosphere of Sneed. 12 13 RETURNING Once again, many alumni returned to their alma mater for Homecoming. According to tradition, the golf flags were flown on top of the commons to honor the event. Plants suddenly emerged and the campus was tidied up to welcome the alums back. This year, the Homecoming game was between the Pikes and the I ' s, with the Flying I Band providing the halftime entertainment. Another highlight was the Old-timers baseball game. Former Southwestern baseball stars c ompeted against the Southwestern team. MOOD HALL REOPENS Mood Hall was rededicated and renamed Mood-Bridwell Hall during Homecoming. The year-long renovations were finally completed and Mood-Bridwell was officially displayed for everyone to see. The building now houses most of the faculty offices, classrooms, the computer center, and a museum. The museum contains objects which portray the life around Georgetown and the history of Southwestern University. ST. ELMO ' S FIRE This year, St. Elmo ' s Fire returned to entertain Southwestern for the umpteenth time. In an attempt to make this an all-university event, the Union asked many groups to help sponsor St. Elmo ' s Fire. Many students attended this concert and found it to be good Friday night entertainment. 16 GREEK WEEK AND THE GREAT CHILI COOKOFF Panhellenic and IFC again sponsored Greek Week to promote better Greek relations. A Wheelsathon was held for charity with all the participants circling campus on some sort of wheels. The big event, though, was the chili cookoff. Fraternities and sororities fought for the title of best chili , and everyone had their own idea of who had the best. A dance was planned at Frontier Hall, but it was cancelled due to the closing of Frontier Hall. MERRY CHRISTMAS Christmas cheer spread through the campus as students caroled and trimmed miniature trees for their rooms. Tradition was the theme, beginning with the traditional presentation of Handel ' s Messiah by the Chorale. The Extraordinaires trimmed the Christmas tree in the SUB while many students supervised The simple beauty of the Candlelight Service touched many, while others thought the Christmas dinner in the Commons more appetizing. The faculty proved to be good waiters, as they served coffee and dessert. 18 DECEMBER GRADUATION December was graduation time for those graduating early or late. There was a record number of December graduates this year. The new alumni left to face a vast future, hoping that Southwestern left them prepared to meet it. 19 BEGINNING A NEW SEMESTER Spring began with long registration lines, and students not sure as to which lines were the right ones. Once finished, there was also the problem of moving back in. Classes began again, and once more we settled down to the country club life at Southwestern. 20 RUSH, RUSHING, RUSHED What Greeks had been anticipating all year finally occurred in January: freshman rush. This was the weekend that they were catered to in the hopes that they would join. After two nights of parties for men, and three nights for women, decisions were made on both sides. Ideally, these decisions would match, and for the most part, they did. But there were also those freshmen who did not receive the bid of their choice or any at all. And there were those who just wanted to be independent. Bid day was a day for squeals of happiness and tears of frustration. GIVING BLOOD, GIVING LIFE In January, Ruter House Council sponsored a blood drive. A large number of students participated as many pints were collected. For those who gave blood for the first time, they found that it really didn ' t hurt, and it was a good way to get free orange juice and cookies. 22 SHAMROCK OUT, SAGA Students came back from Spring Break to discover a notice that told of a change in food services. The first question most students wanted to know was whether it would provide better food or not. Rumors flew around campus about changes. As it turned out, Shamrock asked to leave because it was operating at a loss with no apparent turnaround in sight. Saga agreed to step in at once and began operation when students returned from Spring Break. In an effort to economize, Saga produced food that many students referred to as mystery meals . Students also complained about smaller portions served. By the end of the year, however, food became more recognizable and larger portions were served. Most decided that it was a change for the better. ELECTIONS Elections held in April determined who will be the leaders next year. For days, candidates asked students to sign their petitions. In the Georgetown election, the issue of beer-to-go was decided. By a margin of 23 votes, it was approved. Beer has come to Georgetown. It was a common sight to see students giving their parents a grand tour of the campus. Mothers and fathers saw their children honored at the Honors Assembly. Many awards were given, including Cardinal Key ' s Outstanding Freshman and Sophomore Women, won by Cynthia Burns and Jan Oliver, respectively. Alpha Chi members and Who ' s Who recipients were also recognized. After lunch, parents were treated to sorority and fraternity receptions. The overall effect was having parents leave knowing that Southwestern was worth the tuition money. J. FINALS BLUES k+Jj a£ W ?, I |M POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE OPERA THEATRE PRESENTS 1 .„ • DIALOGUE OF THE CARMELITES CULTURE COMES TO S.U. This year proved to be a very successful year for the Artist Series. The first to come to Southwestern this year was Victoria de los Angeles, internationally acclaimed opera star. In February, violini st Eugene Fodor. Audiences were enchanted by his masterful recital. Finally, Jose Greco and his company treated Southwestern to Spanish flamenco dancing. Take no notice if you hear the tune of Take This Job and Shove It . One day you think you know all 900 students here, and then when you ' re trying to identify people in organizations, you don ' t know anyone. Please accept my apologies if you find that you are not in here — at my last estimate, roughly 650 students are in here some place or another. That ' s 72.22% — let ' s see UT beat that! It ' s been an interesting year- the yearbook office has moved three times, and the format of the yearbook was changed in May. But enough of the trials and tribulations, and on to the thank yous.
