MOOOJHERITAGE MUSEUM GEORGETOWN, TEXAS Sou ' wester 1975 Southwestern University Georgetown, Texas Each year seems much the same as the last; Southwestern is given whole to us: the buildings, the professors, the routines, the faces, ourse lves all exist as if in one large photograph of which we learn only the details. And when we do begin to include the backroads and the river, Austin and maybe Adelines into the range of our action these things quickly lose their novelty and come to be just a little more our own. Until Southwestern ceases to be a place it becomes a habit, a way of living. Then we can at least say what is meant by the liberal arts education. For all paper and the print, the sunny days and the Friday nights have become inseparable from us. : xssssaam -jts-s ■0 4 - X The days go by and we with them. Things happen, sometimes by the syllabus, sometimes by circumstance, but always quietly, consistently, like the day itself. We ' ll mark the date of a test with a methodical deliberateness, study the night, then take it and forget it in the motions of living until the next marked day. Somehow this doesn ' t seem that great big word experience, we ' ve been taught to anticipate. It doesn ' t seem that all the reading and the daily relations can lump together into a coherent four years crucial to everything that is ourselves. It doesn ' t seem experience, but it is. 10 11 Each year seems much the same until we see, at last, how much has changed. 12 13 14 btUKbt IUYYN CITY LIMIT ' POP. 6395 HISTORICAL MARKERS A 4 15 1 ' Activities for the Abcdarians A program offering entertainment in music and theatre, the Artist Series sponsored a variety of productions throughout the fall and spring. These were the catchwords of The Greeks during the year as the sororities and fraternities continued to fulfill their promises. The Greek system was the hub of much activity as it provided a social life for the majority of stu dents. The spot, the ranch, the Colonel ' s house- these were part of the off campus party scene. Creeks also participated in philanthropic activities, the most successful one being the Phi ' s collection of over $1,000 for Janice Anderson. Despite constant reprehension sororities and fraternities continued to retain their popularity. Zeta actives, Sherri Byrd and Debbie Eidson greeted an ecstatic sorority sister, Susan Armstrong. Pikes took a breather and discussed new plays for the coming game. Greased pig chasing, was one of the many hilarious events of KA Derby Day. 34 In late October, Alumni gathered at Southwestern as the festivities for Homecoming began, As a salute to the Fine Arts, the week included a faculty music recital, band concerts, short plays, and a Magic Review full of songs, skits, and bits of magic. On the sports scene, the KA ' s squeezed by the Pikes in the football finale, and a bike race was sponsored by Ruter Hall. Business and social matters such as board meetings and alumni dinners, rounded out the eventful week. This was a time for many alums to greet old friends and recall good times. With the commons unusually full, Sarge outdid herself for the weekend. ■y j B JKKEKII _ the K ijr Cheering fans rallied behind the KA ' s and the Pikes. For getting in shape, or staying in shape Jogging remained a favorite form of physical exercise. Whether the reason was for intramural sports or being on time to an 8 ' o clock class, everyone tried jogging at one time or other. A few dedicated souls actually stuck to it if they weren ' t discouraged from shin splints or feeling out of breath. f Mr. John Chapman and Dr. Fred Hilgeman took their daily jog around the park. Nancy Hutchings rounded the corner of the campus. As part of his Outdoor Survival Training Jim Farris ran several miles a day. 37 Kicks in college kept sanity. ■ r ii • Russell Dees and David Ray tried their luck at sliding down the hill. Students boarded the snow train. Teresa Coble and Donnie Sherwood took the plunge. Bart had a good time jumping for sticks with Steve Leeper. 58 In a casual setting, the whole campus gathered to honor the Browns at a school picnic. Having labored over books, labs, instruments, andS.U., students reward themselves with Leisure. Taking advantage of the sun, Debbie Poole relaxed around the pool. Bob Wheatley and Darrell Hurmis took a cruise around the campus. Ellis Mills, Tim Stanton, and Les Russell spent an afternoon at the cliffs. 39 Meal Time the seating arrangement 40 41 Ah, yes Night life in Georgetown! There ' s the. . . No, that closed at 6:00. What more can one say? Not much. At the popular all night spot, Ramirez ' s, Tom Nash purchased a mid-night snack from Juan. Leo Bompart and Liz Roberts enjoyed their beers at Adeline ' s. The new Sonic (service with the speed of sound) became a popular hang-out for hungry students. 42 T3J Whether for financial reasons, for privacy, or in the case of married students, out of necessity; more and more students preferred Off campus living than ever before. Some inhabited garage apartments and trailers, while others chose suburban style apartments, country farmhouses, or fraternity houses. All off campus students seemed to enjoy their freedom from campus pressures. As one student commented, Off campus living makes you feel like you ' re really living and not just a sardine in a can. Saturdays for April Fennell and Mary Arredondo meant stocking up enough food for the week. Open fields behind his house were pleasant for Worth Green. 43 There are those occasions in our lives that we are compelled to put our best foot forward. Such an occasion is Parent ' s Weekend. Rooms are cleaned, programs planned, studies suspended, and a general aura of activity takes place. Parents, students, and faculty have programs ranging from Honors Assembly, Casino Night, and Parent ' s Council scheduled for every hour. In some instances, parents may actually get a chance to spend some time with their children. Members of the Humanities Division were recognized during the Honors Assembly. Bobby Beattie and his parents dined at the special luncheon. Steve trek dealt a round of blackjack. In hopes of buying an auctioned gift, parents and students gambled for money during Casino Night. 44 Quiet, janis Davis Q Quick, Dr. Robert Soulen Quizzical, Madeline Miller 45 Relating to others was a predominant theme of activities. Young lovers relating to each other in any (and all) ways possible, faculty relating to students with sesitivity, students relating to faculty with despair and joy, upperclassmen relating to freshmen with disdain, and even Greeks relating to non-Greeks (sometimes with hidden tensions) were all parts of the scene. A student-faculty retreat helped build a new sense of community. A workshop initiated by BOSS helped blacks, browns, and whites strive toward greater relatedness in an effort to overcome the many barriers of communication on our campus. In the end, one finds that the struggle to relate to others is an ongoing task. Carl Lowry and Cindy Lewis shared their enjoyment of the phenomenal snowfall. Relaxation was enjoyed by all during the student faculty weekend. 46 Black Awareness week provided opportunities for healthy activities and discussion between the Black community and the entire campus. ft • h 1 Students participated in a Latin experience, learning songs, dances, and tasting new foods. In the informal atmosphere, students and faculty soaked up the sun and exchanged ideas. 47 One activity everyone participated in was Sub-Sitting We picked up our mail in the SUB; we read our mail there; we saw Union programs there; we bought books there; we ate there (to avoid the Commons) and some people even slept there. It was probably the best place on campus to just sit around and talk with friends. The recreation room was the hangout for the pool sharks. The coffee shop was the hangout for the off campus students. The main lounge was the hangout for general degenerates. The SUB brought the campus together in a way that no other place did. Wondering how he was ever going to make it Kathy O ' Conner and John Quinius compared through the semester, Rex Falconer proceeded to notes in between class periods. pay for a semester ' s load of books. Mike Miller discussed the pros and cons of being Megaphone Editor. Eager hands attempted to collect their non-existent mail. 48 Senator John Tower, Special guest at the Inauguration of the John Goodwin Tower Chair of Political Science, gave a speech of apprecia- tion during the convocation. In the spring, the University ended its Program For Progress and one of the biggest events in it was the dedication of the Tower Chair. The political science professorship was officially dedicated in February in an elaborate ceremony which included a speech by Senate minority leader Hughes Scott. The chair ' s namesake spoke at a luncheon afterwards for an audience made up of many of Southwestern ' s friends, faculty and students. A new dimension was added to studies because of the inauguration of the chair, and the benefits will be long-felt. Senator High Scott, Senator John Tower and President Durwood Fleming participated in the ceremonial dedication of The Tower Chair. • , 77 A reception provided time for the public to meet Senator Tower and the other guests on a personal basi 49 Sponsoring student activities, the committees of the Union attempted to keep S. U. ' ers involved, happy, stimulated, entertained, and or busy at something constructive. Free University, Coffee House Entertainment, Ideas and Issues, and Outdoor Recreation were committees in full swing while Hospitality became almost extinct, and the newly created Minorities committee still remained on paper. Debbie Barnes demonstrated her newly acquired skill in bicycle repair. 50 Lead by John Wolf and Steve Leeper, members of the Outdoor Recreation worked hard, played hard, and slept hard while enjoying the beauty of rivers, caves, mountains, and deserts. Highlights of the year included trips to the Medina River, Enchanted Rock, Big Bend National Park, and all points in between. Roughing it at Big Bend, Larry Clay washed dishes the hard way. Hikers trudged through the desert-like country. Doug Ratchford and Parry Fidler sunggled deep into their sleeping bags in readiness for a cool night. John Wolf explored the deep crevices of Enchanted Rock. 51 As the self proclaimed cultural arm of the university, the Coffee House committee brought the best of the Texas talent to its Sawdust Cafe. Events included concerts by Austin bands, Wheatfield, the Doak Snead Band, a poetry festival, and ajalepeno pepper eating contest. Along with consistent programming, cartoons and hot tomales helped the Coffee House win the Union Committee of the Year award. Doak Snead drew an exceptional crowd. - i W ■■;|W If I I ' f 1  , ,VV. One day he appeared, unannounced with gala colored scarves, ropes and rings. He was quick, he was witty We watched-but could not see. We laughed. We gasped. Through it all we were taught that to believe in magic is to be open to what is beyond. Concerned with the apathy of Southwestern students, attention was focused upon programs to awaken and confront the campus. Over ten speakers were sponsored as well as a series of Ingmar Bergman films. By working with other individuals and committees, the committee sought to help unify the Union program. This extra effort and publicity resulted in a larger number of student participants from different campus sects. I. and I. brought a needed current of awareness. Larger events included a Mardis gras dance in the fall, and Casino night in the Spring. That ' s entertainment! The Louisiana Family played tunes from the sixties for the masquerade dance. Although eXams were frequent, there was one time of the year which struck the very soul of the grade conscious student — Finals. It was not pleasant for the other kind of student either, but it did not carry the catastrophic effect. What it did carry was a disease common to all involved in the academic iconoclasm — psychomenanguic deteriotortis or the weird outs. 31 MM MGIGIHHfii w DEM w Sociology 311 sweated out their final late Friday afternoon. 59 In December people were bustling for many reasons. The semester was ending, the cold weather had hit, and most of all it was Christmas. Yuletide came and the holiday season was going full force. Christmas tree decorating became popular in the SUB and LK. Sneed House had an open house that attracted the season ' s wanderers. Handel ' s Messiah and a candle light worship service were presented in the Lois Perkind Chapel expressing the religious mood of the holidays. With joy and with reverence, Southwestern celebrated Christmas. One of the many tree trimmers, Rose Kemp joined in the decorating party at L.K. - Meredith Teague lead the gift exchange at L.K. Tradition and ceremony were also a part of the Christmas spirit as in the evening Candle Light Service. 60 . .
