s u 7 w E S T E R 1974 Southwestern University Georgetown, Texas Threshold of Another Hundred Roger Darrow, Editor Southwestern University has this year celebrated a hundred years in Georgetown that brought us thoughts ot the past and who has participated in it. The Sou ' Wester 1974 is dedicated to the living history of Southwestern University through the personage of Dean Oscar A. Ullrich- The Dean fits into the history of Southwestern like a hand into a tailored glove. By that is meant he has had more contact with more of SU ' s stu- dents than any other person. And the history of Southwestern University is people. Thus he is the focal point. During the forty-five years, 1920 to 1965, he held the positions of professor to dean. Even after his retirement he could not separate himself from the campus. He would walk among the buildings, probably recalling many of the great times of SU. The name of DR. OSCAR A. ULLRICH brings to mind someone who walked to his classes each day with a Sherlock Holmes pipe and briefcase in hand. Many students remember him by the Christmas cards he sent every year. Others know him as a quiet, gentle man with a light sense of humor. In my research to know more about the Dean, I found several delightful stories. And here, in her own words, is one from one of his former stu- dents, Mary Elizabeth Fox. It takes a lot of understanding to be a dean. That ' s one reason that Dr. O.A. Ullrich survived so long in a deanship position. Of course, being a psychologist helped some, too. It was in the middle of a sentence in the middle of a lecture in a psychology class (many springs ago) that she sauntered in just as Dr. Ullrich said, without losing the thread of his lecture, ' If I had won an automobile last night, I would not have come to class at all. ' She didn ' t know whether to go or to stay. She stayed. She had indeed won a small racer at the local cinema the previous evening and had driven ' round and ' round the flag pole (tooting the horn) prior to condescending (as she puts it) to go to the 8:00 a.m. class twenty minutes late. Roger H. Darrow Editor The Dean Dr. Oscar Alvin Ullrich October 29, 1891 — February 16, 1974 Everyday we seem closer and closer to impeachment for Richard M. Nixon. If and when impeachment pro- ceedings begin, the outcome may be the forced re- moval of Nixon from the office. Politics hit SU with the May Primaries. Next year there will be the alternative to oral finals for Seniors — a Senior Project. And then there ' s the problem that is referred to as the Energy Crisis . What I ' ve heard just isn ' t convincing. Some- one tells me that the gas companies are holding back to up the price. Sounds right to me because that ' s just what all the gas stations have done. Of course there was that oil em- bargo from the Middle East. I knew it couldn ' t last long be- cause I didn ' t see the Arabs agreeing on anything for any time at all. There is no energy shortage at SU. In fact there seems to be an overabundance. By that is meant — STREAKERS. They made a daylight appearance simultaneous with a High School tennis tournament, a visit with a nationally known adolescent psychologist, and a steering committe for Parents Weekend. BEFORE AFTER DURING: A release of tension in the form of a car bash sponsored by the Sigs during dead week. ■■■K v,. .■mm SU celebrated its 100th year at Georgetown October 6, 1973. It was a big occasion. Every- one had fun. There were picnics, costumes, nostalgia, etc. But we must remember that what is the closing of one year is the begin- ning of another. And styles have changed. f UW -Wv a .:- i All across the nation, colleges have been faced with a shortage of students. It is as if college-oriented students have disappeared in a puff of smoke or fallen by the wayside. In order to keep up enroll- ments, most colleges are reaching to the depths of the bag and allowing the entry of underachievers. A long range possible solution is the promotion of an image to the very young. Who knows, that may just be the answer to our problem. 7«T n Hi i f mm SZZsMmmmmi TELEPHONE There ' s a new style of kidnapping. Any would-be kidnapper should abduct his victim and demand ransom in the form of food for the poor, sort of like Robin Hood. Such demands better society by equalizing incomes and eliminate the possibility for the cap- ture of the criminal during the ransom pick-up. This year ' s students have been more verbal in their grievances. One group that has been referred to as the V.C. has aroused considerable attention on campus. One of the incidents was a bridge erected between the SUB and Chapel. One lady told Floyd Lackey, Relax, after all it ' s not everyday that a person gets a per- manent structure named after him. And you ' re not even sick. There was really a bridge over the sidewalk. It was in protest of the leaky pipe that was in the vicinity and the mess it had caused. Another protest was that of the poor garbage pick-up that was caused by the resignation of Frank. That complaint took the form of a phone booth stuffed full of trash placed outside of Mood during Homecoming Weekend. 10 What about Agnew? Haven ' t you heard!? He ' s no longer V.P. Some guy named Ford is up there. That reminds me of something in the ' 72 campaign when the Republicans were bigmouthing that the Democrats couldn ' t find a candidate for the running mate of George McGovern. Weren ' t there 7? And now this incident with Agnew. I don ' t know which is worse. 12 An administrator in the Program for Prog- ress was dismissed. Another resigned. Some professors are retiring and others not re- newed. Then there ' s the ordeal over in the Fine Arts Building. Students are upset over the communications procedures involved in the hiring and firing system used at South- western and circulated a letter that verbal- ized their disapproval to get those persons signatures who felt the same way. Some pro- fessors were so upset that they asked their students to remove their names from the letter. Seems they either fear their jobs or else don ' t want it to look like they had them sign the letter. But anyway there promises to be several new faces at Southwestern next year, however, no more than usual. One of them will be a new dean for the School of Fine Arts. 13 We will all remember the military alert when both the United States and the Soviet Union were on guard against possible attack from the other. The alert stemmed from the Middle East and its never ending conflicts. bjAftft 14 Traditions at SU are on the change. The Booties are about to be flooded so there will increased usage of the cliffs. Adele Chandler working on the mural in Mood East. 15 Early in the spring semester, there were 14 violations ot visitation policy in HB-MS. This incident brought to head all the rebellious and carefree spirit that had been growing since September. 16 The R.A. ' s have been under pres- sure from the administration as well as the students. The rumor was that they will be selected with greater scrutiny to avoid prob- lems in the future. It seems itwas just a rumor. SMft feJ - ■s S ' RSft Did you actives stay up and spy where the KA pledges hid the derbies or did they tell your pledges where they were? How RUDE! Oh, is it? What she didn ' t know was that there had been planned a plot to do what she called rude. The planners decided it wasn ' t worth their effort. Derby Day wasn ' t any cleaner than in past years, but it can be said the participants enjoyed themselves. The surprise event was throwing in the pit some KA pledges. And there were new attractions. The one that got the greatest audience involvement was the solo compeitor trike race. And then she yelled, I ' m rubbin it in as hard as I can. Services provided by the Greeks took on a new light this year. The Phi Mu ' s spon- sored a Mr. Hope contest. Votes were cast n the form of money. The person re- ceiving the greatest amount of money was Mr. Hope — Rufus Chaney, and the total proceeds go to the hospital ship S.S. Hope. Also the Pikes, KA ' s and ADPi ' s spon- sored a derby day for a boys ranch from the surrounding area. -I ,v Mi ' M ! SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY if £ Miss Suzanne McDaniel Miss Southwestern Miss Grace Kilgore U ' WESTER SUPERLATIVES I don ' t know if it has ever been explained just what the term Sou ' wester Superlative means. In the four years that I have been at Southwestern, it has been handled in several different ways, but each year there has been one common thread that makes the award unique. That is the persons who are selected are all nominated by the faculty. They are nominated on the basis that they have contributed to Southwestern in the area of their categories and in other activities on campus. From the list of nominees, especially where the list is too numer- ous, the Sou ' Wester staff votes on each category to finalize them. This year, due to the ex- panded size of my staff, I had to limit the final voting to the section editors. To each of you who have been nominated— Congratulations. Blount 231 That day was a special day. There were several places of uniqueness for any graduating class. We were the only class where the destiny of Commence- ment rested upon Winn Alley. We were given the charge of using our fail- ures in our lives. We can ' t be perfect in everything. We were the first to have our graduation in the Fine Arts Building. We felt an emptiness rising inside us. Then we were forced to look into the future. At that moment we were torn between the falsity of either being lightheaded or breaking down and the reality of the upcoming sobriety we were to face. Ah, the light shone brightly as we realized that clouds from our memories shadow our future. 232 233 ABOVE: Roger Darrow, Editor RIGHT: Beverly Wedemeyer, Class Section Editor FAR RIGHT: Gretchen Galloway, Faculty Section Editor 234 Another year has come and gone, today is now yesterday. The staff of The Sou ' Wester 1974 wishes that through our representation of the year at Southwestern, you may be able to recall many fond memories be they the routine mailbox check or the fad of streaking. Special thanks go to Mrs. Oscar A. Ullrich, Miss Marjorie Beech and Miss Mary Elizabeth Fox for their invaluable time and aid. I wish to express my gratitude to my section editors Beverly Wedemeyer, Christine Fuge, Broocks Osborne, Kathy Leckie and Gretchen Galloway for the long hours spent in prep- aration of their sections. And last I want to thank all the students who made the year the way that we will all remember.
