THE SOU ' WESTER Melissa Kirkpatrick, Editor A juncture in time, a quiet space in a student ' s mental turmoil, the peace of the end of one thing, the beginning of another: we came to learn, to grow, to be — that is what this work is meant to show. Few words are needed, for each one ' s interpretation will be unique. It is said that rationality comes as an elaboration of feeling — a feeling perhaps you will find here, a spark of memory lit in a picture of time past. Search for that spark within these pages and find your own year at Southwestern University. The album is dedicated to the student, to the teacher — their continual striving to learn, their hopes for a changing world. i ' : ; She ■- ««•«. its glow in the shape of a knife. It is etching in the dark of the page; I see myself in black and white. Focusing is vain; the space between our eyes is small. I look again; my senses crawl toward that gray sky carved j from the photogenic past ' . I do recall the smell of black and white in these wild floral days. I was full of the juice my fingers were petals to, my sweat the sea which nourished these swaying stems and my blood flowed triumpha«k toward the end of every cjay. I ■■' ■« •- m .- ; ' r wa I It But this photograph is fac|©d and I am faded. Our musty smells now dub cTexay M JM ' Shall I compare me to this summer day? The dog against whom I counted time has merged his fur y into the stems of blended gray; my color will not keep. The black and white is etched away; •? the knife is moving toward my ,.age 5j 3l | JBfr -, and I am powerless to turn he page. , — B igley . 238 ■4 • • - — • - - M rift As another year at the Patch drew to a close, the staff of the Sou ' wester twisted, turned, pushed, bribed and coaxed this yearbook into shape, learning all the while that collegiate journalism is indeed a thankless task. Problems take on gigantic proportions as deadlines approach. If you like the book — wonderful. If you don ' t, perhaps there ' s at least one part you can groove on. But either way, you have to admit that we cared enough to keep trying. And because they cared to try (thus making this book a joint student effort instead of a one man job), special thanks must go to a very loyal staff: to Gayle Galloway and Roger Darrow, who suffered editor ' s nerves pulling their sections together; to Don Guerrant, who stuck with us to the bitter end to come up with the indispensable photo- graphs; to Zakaria Ali, who donated his time and all that talent to add so much to the faculty section; and to our guiding spirit, advisor Mary Callaway. { iXH t A ?
