The oc- casion attracted students as classes were temporarily dismissed and dignitaries as- sembled on the lawn for Ambassador Clark ' s presentation of the Texana Collection to the Cody Memorial Library. At the Convocation following the presen- tation, Mrs. Lyndon Johnson received an honorary degree. Also receiving honorary degrees were Mr. Grogan Lord of George- town, and Mr. William S. As we look back on the past year when we were first selected as editors of the 1968 SOU ' WESTER, we now wonder if it was such an honor, or rather a sly way of punishing some unsuspecting soul. Our first thought was to have a radically different yearbook that would show the sense of urgency that our gener- ation feels. Since then, the views and the situations have been modified, yet we of the SOU ' WESTER feel that this is a tremendous book. The question always seems to come up, whether at the Commons, the library, or the dorm, How ' s the annual coming? And at times, we felt like saying, It ' s already gone. But with such a great staff, we were able to muddle through. There are three aspects of this yearbook that we have tried to emphasize. First was that the book should be a record of the year, showing all phases of the University, from lounging in the tube room, to loving .... The second and most important aspect was the student. We tried to capture the mood of the school and the feelings that are felt from the time a student first sees his room (in the Senior ' s case, the horror when we discovered we were to live in a building called Mood), to the excitement of receiving that all- important certificate on graduation day. Finally we tried to present the book in a new way, aware that the presentation is important. Thus we went to the modrian layout and the Greek groups. But this masterpiece that now lays before your eyes could not have been done without the help of Mr. John Hobbs, advisor, who helped us over the hill. At last a special tribute to John David Fields, photog- rapher, who had to put up with crazy editors with weird ideas in order to get the job done. We hope you enjoy the 1968 SOU ' WESTER as it brings back the memories of this year. —Dudley Craig Bazar — Chrissie Dickerson 240 1
