SggBL t the annual i i miss witch and mr. goblin k contest was held with 1 a gory array of Ik k contestants and talents. in the end sheila ramsey and , hank smith snared the titles. 23 24 a number of special events were hosted on the campus this year: here from southwestern medical school, dr. arthur grollman talked with pre-med students; winston bode autographed copies of his book, portrait of pancho, a biography of su alum j. frank dobie; dr. hester conversed with mr. John d. wheeler who was honored at a dinner for his outstanding service as chairman of our board of trustees; John tower, along with the trustees, administration, faculty and students, paid tribute to dr. george hester for his 40 years at su; sterling wheeler started the year off with a lecture series on freedom and the kind of church everyone needs. 25 β– I when basketball season rolled around, an all-out campaign was made by the spirit committee, cheerleaders and coach merritt to boost spirit and attendance at the games. the pirates, who turned out a fighting season against some strong teams (including the university of houston), well-deserved the increased student spirit and admiration for their efforts. Christmastime arrived again this year in a series of su traditions: the band concert and tree trim, the sub and commons christmas dinners, exams in every subject, fraternity parties, sorority caroling, the choirs ' presentation of handel ' s messiah, the final sing song in the courtyard of mood hal the candlelight service in the chapel. Β HE- Β« 29 southwestern would not be itself without a pack of dogs romping around the campus; to most of us they make it a little more like home; they attend chapel better than we do. two of the dogs in particular found their ways into our hearts and our dorm rooms; knurd, the sandy-colored mutt and sam, the woeful-eyed basset and protege of the ka house. 30 i 3Β£r zk bam! whop! zowie! bang! it wasn ' t batman that hit us in January (he was in february); it was finals. after all the frolicking and merrymaking at Christmastime and new year ' s each individual was struck differently by the dark evils. next year will be a new story. 31 the sub, more vital than ever this year, met student interest in numerous ways; among them: Jules feiffer, contemporary humorist, offered his views on american history and society in general; lu mitchell, dallas folksinger, captivated and charmed everyone β€” her sincerity, understanding, and wit were refreshing; the forum committee sponsored a model un, the first of its kind on our campus; interested students role-played the united nations in session. 33 for anyone who felt culturally estranged in georgetown, the southwestern-community artist series this year was a welcome relief; variety made it even more exciting. the ever-welcome victor alessandro directed the san antonio symphony and the audience through a program of outstanding music and performance; podolski and v an aker, lutist and soprano duet, were rare and pleasing entertainment; richard Syracuse returned to the campus as guest pianist; free and impressionistic sounds by the paul winter ensemble arrested even those who never cared much for jazz. 34 35 dl - - -. i - s and when the first snowflake entered the atmosphere the student body unofficially took the day off and scattered to fraternity row, the hills of the golf course, the park, the boodies or the football field. the phis challenged the entire female population, and the alphas beat the pikes again. the girls were permitted to wear their long pants publicly, and the dean wore her boots. 37 38 the personal and alone moments when the spirit is allowed to dream, reflect, to search, to construct, create its own identity; a few moments apart to equilibrate the external world that tries to mold us. 39 . ,β– β€’- ' β–  oscar a. Ullrich, dean emeritus of the college of arts and sciences, was honored as mr. homecoming. here, he and his wife are shown with the caricature originated for the occasion. 40 homecoming queen nominees were mary Catherine reed, pam rozelle, sandra starke, noelle harlow, diane greer, janet bauman, dee chapman, and emily griffin, the queen was dee chapman. a tradition was revived in the form of sing song, in which the sororities competed. June pearson, songleader for adpi, happily accepted the first place silver tray. second place went to the dz ' s, and honorable mention to the tri-delts. 41 a group of art, music, and drama students, under the direction of drexil riley, worked the entire year adapting george sessions perry ' s novel, hackberry cavalier, for the stage. the result was a genuine and lively image of backwoods people. it played four performances to full and enthusiastic audiences. members of the special class were: ann alloway joe aranki shirley ballard grace evans bob haas angus hendrick george lindsey susan mims John murrell joe mc corkle jerry neel van phillips linda simmons bill springer 42 43 44 spring became long walks and sunsets, happy faces, the boodies, low-water and the san gabriel; it was a time for red bud trees, the golf course, spelunking; a bonfire on the riverbank with steaks and a cooler full. minds became lazy and classes became cut; professors became irritable. -mm mmd 45 47 .β€’Β ' .? 49 back row: alloway, ramsey, ballard, murrell front row: mc corkle, simmons, springer (president), lindsey the mask and wig officers and board of directors produced for the organization a memorable season of theatrical productions for the year 1965-1966. 50 leading off the year was a comedy, the skin of our teeth pictured here in leading roles are sheila ramsey, shirley ballard, lynn presley, John murrell and John hamilton. a first this year in su ' s drama department was senior students directing a one-act play in lieu of a recital. as long as the grass grows green , written and directed by ray harlan, starred angus hendrick, John mansfield, shirley ballard and cindy galbreath. darah meley argues at John murre in a scene from the new tenant directed by 52 above, dr. springer is depicted directing van phillips and joe mc corkle in the united states premiere of wilberforce, m.p. other members of the cast shown here are John hamilton, John murrell, bill springer, and John mansfield. 53 mask and wig ' s hackberry cavalier was presented Saturday before graduation in honor of mrs. george sessions perry, wife of the late author of the book, hackberry cavalier, and edward dark, united states ambassador to australia, who spoke at the commencement exercises Sunday. graduation is the end of formal education for some, just another beginning for others; it was the last gathering of the senior class before it dissolved as a group and each went his separate path to marriage, graduate school, work, play, travel, the service. smiling, seniors attended their last required chapel 55 56 personalities 57 sharon brown, June chase, bronwen morgan, Janet durst miss southwestern nominees 58 miss southwestern dorothy bohmfalk 59 who ' s who in june chase β–  60 american colleges and universities david price 61 dennis mayes 62 Helen medley 63 james adams 64 John walker marilyn mc cullough 66 bill Johnston 67 janet durst 68 donna goodenough 69 Mbm $fe dane evans 70 sharon brown 7 kaaren van amburgh dorothy bohmfalk 73 Bernard alger 74 bronwen morgan 75 homecoming queen dee chapman 76 sou ' wester beauty w MmtliMP pam byrd delta delta delta beauty janie chiles alpha delta pi beauty dorothy bohmfalk delta zeta beauty marcy fischer independent beauty anne morrow 79 phi mu beauty janet roseman zeta tau alpha beauty sandi sherman first row: eileen paxton, noelle harlow, marcy fischer, cynthia brownlee, sharon barr, dorothy bohmfalk, pam byrd second row: margaret schaub, pat riley, cindy ayres, Janice monagin, janie chiles, kathleen heldenfels, carroll alexander, anne morrow third row: laura rogers, ann cater, sandi sherman, lynn moores, carla clemans, Janet roseman, susie christ- man, gail jerrells beauty finalists 81 adams Johnston rust alger (president) leffler Stephens germer ramsey not pictured: hendriclc ozmun blue key men ' s honorary fraternity 82 bray goodenough morgan reid alloway bohmfalk cookston durst (president) mc cullough medley phelps reed van amburgh watts cardinal key women ' s honorary fraternity 83 adams browne cleclcley durst harlan langford medley nicholson price reed not pictured: baird moore i. rust flemming ove pope sweet (president) germer mc coolc porter watts alpha chi scholarship society 1 1 p A I 84 abel (president) Johnson miller not pictured: hallman alexander langford porter cord ray mc cook ramsey durst mc intyre reed frier mc kimmey savage watts pi gamma mu national social science honor society 85 alloway lindsey WA bates aranki ramsey ballard simmons not pictured: hendriclc mc corkle neel phillips springer (president) pi epsilon delta national collegiate players 86 not pictured: burke hallman hendrick mayes (president) stewart alger bray browne hancock mc deary mc cook reid rust watts daniel mc kimmey pi delta epsilon national journalism fraternity 87 88 organizations 89 front row: house, hancock, schrum, cowen, reid middle row: chase, ramsey, croom, kidson, sandberg back row: wigham, millikan, mc mullen, alger, raney, price, mc burnett, miller senate 90 commission chairman and advisor front row: alger, score, kidson, odiorne back row: house, schrum senate officers adams, president;
