The Honor System is based upon the principle that a student ' s word is trustworthy, both with regard to himself and to others. The Honor System is the highest form of academic discipline because it places the responsibility of reporting and determining cases of cheating upon the individual student. The working bases of the Honor System is the Honor Pledge which the student signs at the end of all papers which the professor designates as individual effort. Each time that a student signs the Honor- Pledge, he makes two statements: he says that his own work is original and that he has seen no other students cheat in any man- ner on the given paper. Under the Honor System it is the duty of each student to report any suspicious act which may be cheating; it is the responsibility of the Honor Council to give the accused a fair trail and to determine his innocence or guilt. The Honor Council is the student organization which hears all reported violations of the honor system. It is composed on eleven voting members, including a President and representatives from the various classes. These members are elected by the Student Body. In addition, there are several members who have a voice but who do not have a vote. Such members include a secretary who keeps a record of all proceedings and representatives from each social or- ganization which does not have a voting member on the Council. As is true of all phases of the Honor System, the responsibilities of the Honor Council rest entirely upon those students who com- pose it. 84 First Row: Kaaren Van Amburgh, Sharon Brown, Bill Germer, Joan Krause, Dick Shook, Mary Ann Clendenin, Robin Mc- Conathy, John Ozman.
