Anyone who has ever come in contact with the sparkling smile and bright personality of Ross Covington will re- member her as someone that always seemed to carry a bit of sunshine with her wherever she went. During this period of bustle and excitement, the girls are judged on charm, grace, poise, and beau- ty by four judges from outside South- western. A tea is held in their honor where they meet and talk with the judges, and later, the judges see each of the girls in evening attire. The night after the decision is reached, the nomi- nees are presented to the student body and the winners are announced with a dance following in the Bishop ' s Memorial Union ballroom. This year sophomore Bubba Few was elected and crowned during the Vaudeville Show of the Carnival. A physics major, Bubba plans to teach after graduation. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, has served as their social chairman, and is also a mem- ber of the German Club. 66 Pirate Cheerleaders The most energetic and hardworking Pirate fans are the cheerleaders for 1959-60. They are elected by the student body for a year and their goal is to spark school spirit. Besides holding pep rallies and selling spirit ribbons, our cheerleaders made a unique Pirate mascot. a ) . She holds the Junior and Senior acting awards as well as the Goosetree Morgan Award of the Mask and Wig Players. Besides Drama, one of her main hobbies is tap dancing. ? • V. i- Who ' s Who in And Pat Johnson (center), a history major, finds a great deal of enjoyment in being a member of Blue Key, Pi Gamma Mu Phi Delta Theta fraternity, A Cappella Choir and Student Senate. He is also on the Honor Council and the University Council. After graduation, Pat is plan- ning to attend qraduate school. Sing Kah Ooi (bottom) plans to attend medical after graduation. He is active in Blue Key, the Society, and the International Club. school Science Joe Darsey (top), a biology major, has been active in Blue Key, Student Senate, and Mens Panhellenic. A Kappa Alpha, he has been president of his chapter for two years. He is shown here holding the fraternity charter. Joe plans to attend medical school after grad- uation. American Colleges Universities Norman Roe (center) has held such offices on campus as vice-president of Alpha Chi, corresponding secretary of Blue Key, and Independent song leader. Norman is an English major, and plans to attend graduate school. Morris Ray Loden (bottom) is active in many phases of campus life. He is a member of Phi Delta Theta frater- nity and Blue Key. As a climax to his three years as Class Senator, Morris was elected Student Body Presi- dent. A business administration major, Morris plans to enter the field of business management. Besides being active in Delta Delta Delta, Delta Omicron, and Cardinal Key, she still finds time to play the piano for her own enjoyment. Paul Primm (right center) is always kept busy with Phi Delta Theta, being Vice-President of the Student Body, on the Honor Council, and being President of Blue Key. Who ' s Mike Johnson (left center), a history major, finds Kappa Sigma, Pi Gamma Mu, Pi Delta Epsilon, and sports in general enough to keep him busy. After graduation, Mike is planning to attend law school. Jerry Elrod, (bottom) a pre-ministerial student, plans to attend seminary after graduation. While on SU campus, Jerry has been active as editor of the MEGAPHONE, and has served on Martin Ruter House Council for two years. He was a transfer student from Lon Morris College in Jacksonville. Cardinal Key, Student Senate, and the Honor Council are just a few of the organizations that Mary Beth is an active member. Alpha Delta Pi, Karen Kuhne (center) is an active mem- ber of many organizations on campus. Her interests include literature and travel. Outstanding scholastically, she has been on the Dean ' s list for three semesters. Who Tri-Delta Nan Kennedy ' s (bottom) interest lies in teach- ing English. She has held many honors on Southwestern campus such as Outstanding Freshman Girl and mem- bership in Cardinal Key. Religious Activities The Student Christian Association coordinates the re- ligious activities on campus by sponsoring many ac- tivities, which include planning Tonight progr ams, Morning Watch, a fund drive for World University Service, and the annual Christmas Sing Song. Enjoying himself at a SCA reception is Dr. Kenneth Pope, speaker for the Fall Preach- ing Mission, who enlightened the campus on A Student ' s Faith. Based on the principle that a student, when placed on his honor will not violate his trust the Honor Council places responsibility on each student. Acting as co-ordinator and mediator, the Honor Council serves all charges made as a result of violation of the honor system. The chairman of the council is the Vice-President of the Student ' s Association. Noted for its excellence in performance and quality of singing, the A Cappella Choir of Southwestern University de- serves tribute for its fine musical achieve- ment. Under the direction of Dean John D. Richards, the choir has sung in over 15 churches this year. The student body has a chance to hear the choir every Thursday in chapel. Dean Richards and choir members discuss one of their selections. 89 ■Band... The band uses its talents not only at concerts, but also to contribute to the Southwestern spirit at bas- ketball games and pep ral- lies. Mr. George Nelson con- ducts the group. Musicians Express Talent Orchestra... The orchestra gives the students and faculty an op- portunity to work together in a common interest. Two concerts are presented each year. Mr. Thomas conductor.
