A EX-STUDIES ASSOCIATION SOU ' WESTER 1957-58 Southwestern University Georgetown, Texas Texas ' Oldest University Anne Johnston Editor 1 Dedication The 1957-58 Sou ' wester is dedicated to Carl Bergquist, who has given so much of his time and thought to the publication of this annual. In Memoriam After nearly forty years of inspired teaching at Southwestern, Dr ; Claud Howard passed away February 24, 1958. He gave to his students practical suggestions and deep insights of continuing worth in their lives. ... a stronger faith his own, And Power was with him. 35?  ; - : ' •• ■■Administration Buildin: Life at Southwestern is a combination of many things. The most important is the blending of the old and the new. The Ad Building, built in 1900, stands for the strength, for the tradition we hold so high, and the achievement of which we are so proud. m The Chapel represents the progress South western has made in this changing world under dynamic leadership. But even more important, it symbolizes the blending of academic life with religious teachings. It is the mixture of these two that makes Southwestern University a great place at which to be. Sammie Weaver — 5 ' 7 , Sr. — Weaves as his team- mates call him, finishes up 4 years of basketball, baseball, and track for the Pirates. Sam ' s great speed makes up for his height while on the ball court. 176 Scoggins, Rydell, and Williams are down there hustling against A I. ' 5 7 - ' 5 8 Pirates Larry Rydell — 6 ' 3 , Jr. — Rich was probably the most improved ball player in the Pirates group, for he seemed to play a smarter and faster game than he had ever displayed before. Rydell is also a track performer at the high jump pit. Jerry Fewell — 5 ' 1 1 , Sr. — Hare as he is called, is probably one of the most popular ball players on the team. Jerry played consistent ball, scoring several times at the final buzzer to save the game. Jerry pitches for the Pirate baseball squad, also. Jesse Scoggins — 6 ' 5 , Jr. — Scrooge helped the S.U. team every game with his rebounding talent and smooth hook shots. He is also a regular on the baseball squad as the first baseman. 177 ' 5 7 - ' 58 Pirates Jack Ireland — 6 ' , Soph. — Jack was a great help to the Pirate squad till slowed down with a back injury. He was also a track squad member as a dash man. Dale Lusk — 6 ' , Jr. — A good example of hustle and determination in a player would characterize the Duck . Dale was oftentimes a starter and steady performer. James Baker — 6 ' 5 , Soph. — Jimmy has im| proved considerably this year He seemed t have found a knack of getting rebounds. Jin is a leaper either in basketball or track togs. 178 ; ' 5 7 - ' 58 Pirates Charles Chance — 5 ' 10 , Soph. — Charles, a George- town product, many times this season held the team together with his accurate floor game. Charlie plays second base also for the Pirates. Louis Johnson — 6 ' 1 , Fresh. — An outstanding reserve who thrilled the crowd with his long, but on the money jump shots. He will certainly be needed in his coming years at S.U. Scrooge dunks it again for 2 more points! 179 ' 57 - ' 58 Pirates Buddy Renick — 5 ' 8 , Fresh. — Buddy should be a great help to the gold and black team in years to come with his smart floor game. He was a good team man, often passing the ball to a teammate where he could have taken a shot himself. Bill Spinn — 5 ' 11 , Fresh. — A ballplayer who has yet to see too much action but gained a lot of college experience while a first year man. Billy is a good potential for S.U. in years to come. 180 Watch it boys! Ooops — the Pirates score again! ' 57 - ' 58 Pirates (Not Pictured) Charles Spellman — 6 ' 2 , Fresh. — One of the fish on the varsity, getting experience for coming years by playing many practice or inter-squad games and training. Ronnie Ogden — . ' 5 , Fresh. — Casper is truly a fine prospect for varsity play, for he has a year behind him to help him find the college way of playing ball.
