A. Ullrich, who has given many years to the betterment of Southwestern, the institu- tion he loves so dearly. memoriam Our friend, Raymond Crow of Alice, Texas, was taken from us on November 13, 1956, as the result of an automobile accident. His easy-going nature, and good humor will always be a good lesson in how we should live. The buildings on these two pages are symbols of Southwestern life The Ad Building, built in 1900, stands for the strength, for the tradition we hold so high, and the academic achievement of which we are so proud. Administration Building Lois Peris Chape The Chapel represents the progress Southwestern has made in this changing world under dynamic lead- ership. But even more important, it symbolizes the blending of academic life with religious teachings. It is the mixture of these two that makes Southwestern University a great place at which to be. .Xe Cody memorial Library ?WI β Wii ' ' s rr t . .. . β Β f h; m s? v 5£«trt :- β’. β’β β ' N ' , . 4 A l ,)- β’ ' ' Β« .Β« jjjiΒ£ ' -!β β β β β . . β fttrnwniMTWiWi β -MMJ ' Laura Huyhendall Hall for UJomen Ruter Dormitory for men iai .β .. One day Euline didn ' t show up for football practice. People looked everywhere. The news scorched the wires. Famous Euline was gone. No one was free from suspicion, not even Skinny. This girl must exceed in every aspect of Southwestern life; academically, socially, and religiously. Anne is the ideal of these three, and she possesses a charm so great and a beauty so natural, that she indeed is the perfect picture of South- western and American womanhood. 21 Patricia Ann Whitfield Elsie Aldko Kaneshiro .22 Lois Jane Bartlett Patricia Ann Hoke 23 24 Kay Dean All School Beauty A group of three beauty experts, a professional model, a glamor photographer, and a fashion coordinator, picked Kay from a field of 24 girls as the prettiest girl at Southwestern. . The Beauty Review is sponsored annually by the Sou ' wester. Each sorority and the Independent Girls select four girls from their group. They are judged in school clothes and in formal attire. The most beautiful is picked, and one girl from each organiza- tion as the most beautiful of that group. 25 Rose Nixon Alpha Delta Pi Beauty 26 Kay Dean ; i ; - ; ! The combination of Christian spirit and healthy competition makes this program the success it is. We can boast not only of active varsity teams, but a truly outstanding intramural program. The University ad- ministration realizes the im- portance of intramural athle- tics, and this year bought equipment for tackle football, which greatly increased stu- dent interest. Under the leadership of Miss Lancaster, Mrs. Weir, and Coach Medley, the facilities of the athletic department have been used to their fullest. 132 p - β H Standing: Stanley, Rydell, Baker, Scoggins, Ghormley, Mulchay, Lusk. Front row: Weaver, Churchill, Fewell, Chance, San Miguel, Williams, Sessums. Coach Medley Pirate Basketball 133 Scrooge Scoggins β 6 ' 5 β Soph. F. An easy going gent from Smith- ville who wasn ' t easy going on the floor, for he showed vast improve- ment over his last playing days at S. U. in 53. Scroggins may never have made too many appearances but when he was in the game he never showed any lack of hustle or determination which makes a player. 10 X Cecil Ghormley-6 ' 3 - Sr. C. One of the five men who played their last season for the black and gold. Cecil showed on many occa- sions his leadership and ability on the ball court. A member of the All-Conference team and a very consistant scorer made him a starter in most of the games. V bv il-34 Dale Lusk - 6 ' 1 - Soph. G. Prob- ably the most improved player at Southwestern, he possesses more determination to make good and play than was witnessed all season. He comes to S. U. from San An- tonio and is majoring in Physical Education. Jackie Churchill -5 ' 10 - Sr. G. Jackie, called Cheech by team- mates, played his last season for the Pirates in such a way to draw many comments from the coaches on his constant hustle and trying to win. Jackie also is a letter win- ner in baseball and track every year he has been here. K 1 S Joe San Miguel - 6 ' 0 - Sr. G. Joe has given the crowds at the Pirates games something to yell about in his 3 years at Southwest- ern. Joe San has been a All-Con- ference performer for 2 seasons in basketball and baseball under the leadership of Coach Medley. Joe ended his ball playing for the Pi- rates in good fashion with a 26 point performance against St. Ed- wards and won the ball game. Joe will be missed next year when the ball team takes the floor. o rz V 12 Bob Mulcahy - 6 ' 3 - Sr. F. The rambler of the ball club when he got in the ball games. You could always depend on Bobby for a good six points. Bob has played ball at Teague High, Navarro Jr. College along with Sessums and finishes his last season here at Southwestern. V 33 Larry Rydell - 6 ' 3 - Soph. C. A first line reserve, who comes to the Pirate campus from the Univ. of Ark. where he played freshman ball. He has a good scoring hook shot he unleashed many times this season. He is also high jumps on the track team. v - β y $ ' Β« : Sammie Weaver β 5 ' 7 β Jr. G. Sammie is perhaps one of the best small college ball players for his size in this section of the country. He not only plays basketball but roams the outfield for the Pirate baseball club. Weaves , as he is known to his teammates, was a starter in the closing games of the season and produced when called upon. β’ ' Jerry Fewell - 5 ' 11 - Soph. G. Jerry did very well this season especially under pressure, for he repeatedly showed his poise at the free throw line and came through when called upon. Jerry also plays baseball and is one of the top hurlers on the club. Bobby Williams -6 ' 0 - Jr. G. Bobby is a transfer from San An- gelo Junior College where he played for 2 seasons and now wears the gold and black for the Pirates and was a consistent hustler under the boards and a promising play- maker which we will need next year. IS i ; , Jimmy Baker - 6 ' 5 - Fr. C. Jimmy was a starter on the team this year and played very well for a first year man. His height proved to be an asset to our rebounding game along with his ability to score with his jump shots. He played high school ball in Waco, which went to the state finals. He will long be remembered for the game he won in the last second. Johnny Red Sessums β 6 ' 0 β Sr. F. Red ends his season of round ball this year and did real well when used. Red came to Pirate land from Navarro Jr. College where he teamed up with Bobby Mulcahy to lead them to a success- ful year in basketball and baseball. Barney Stanley - 6 ' 1 - Soph. F. Has terrific rebounding ability. Barney was used outfront this year where he showed a very accurate long shot to the fans many times. Hails from Georgetown, and should be very valuable next year. Charlie Chance - 5 ' 11 - Soph. G. Charlie is a Georgetown product who seems to improve each day till he is satisfied which means he will be in the lineup. Charlie is one of the best coordinated boys on the team. Coon is his name to his teammates and he holds down the 2nd base sack for the baseball club. to K Mrs. Ferguson, Mrs. Robins, Mrs. Klein, Mrs. Lundblad, Mrs. Cloud at the PiK. ' A. Jamaican Formal.
