A proposed member of Cardinal Key shall be a student leader of good Dersonality, character and prominence in extra-curricular activities. Her scholarship shall be above that of the average for all women at the insti- tution for the semester preceding initiation. A proposed member shall be of junior standing. The major purposes of the organization are to recoanize achievement in scholarship and extra-curricular activities; to advance religion, patriotism, and service by affording training for leadership in the college community; and to develop character by application of the cardinal virtues of living. Active membership shall include only men who have completed two full years of college work and are of good character and personality, recoqnized as leaders in scholarship and college activities, and who shall have maintained for the next preceding semester or for their cumulative average, an average above all men ' s average of the institution. The organization has a three fold purpose: 1 The belief in God will be perpetuated and intensified, the government of the United States will be supported and defended, and the established institutions of society and the principles of good citizenship will be preserved. 2. Alpha Chi originated at Southwestern as the Southwestern University Scholar- ship Society in 1915. Later it became organized nationally and the name was changed to Alpha Chi. Members of the Texas Alpha Chapter, the local society, are elected from among the top or ranking tenth of the junior and senior classes. Its aims are stimulation, development, and recognition of scholarship and character. Membership is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be conferred upon a student of Southwestern.
