They must first sing with either the Girls ' or the Men ' s chorus before they may be eligible to try out for the A ' Cappella Choir. The Choir sings for the chapel service each week. In the second game of the season, the Pirates lost a hard fought heartbreaker to Sam Houston State, 8 to 7. The Pirates then sailed through a rugged defensive battle against Stephen F. Austin with a 7 to victory. Abilene went on to win the Texas Conference Championship. In their second conference tilt the Pirates sent the boys from Howard Payne tumbling before a screaming crowd of fans by a score of 19 to 13. The Austin College Kangaroos found the Pirates a weathered crew. Another Pirate victory, 27 to 7! The battered Pirates fell before the Javelinas from Texas A I, by a score of 26 to 6. The Indians from McMurry were too much for the weakened Pirates. They defeated the fighting Pirates 34 to 14.
