ALEXAKDER STACEY It is with the deepest humility that we remember Dr. Alexander Stacey. He was more than just a teacher; he was a philosopher, and a friend to all who knew him. Dr. Stacey ' s name and spirit will remain forever among us as a challenge to students of the quest of truth to which he so determinedly dedicated his life. His very existence came to be centered around the eternal and profound question, What does mean? , and it is by this that we shall always remember Dr. Stacey. DEDICATION. MR. ]OHH D. RICHARDS Music is an important part of Southwestern; music is also part of Mr. John D. Richards. He has won the loyalty and admiration of everyone through his unyielding demand for absolute perfection, tireless energy, generosity, friendliness, and genuine interest in all around him. He has set the highest possible goals for those who work with him, and has constantly been their guide and aid. He has given and added beauty to our daily life through the music which he has helped bring to the hearts of everyone. Because of this — your strength of character and quick, eager smile — we lovingly dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Richards, our friend and teacher! Wonder what Ayres was doing at Freshman Orientation? 2. Registration for new students — note puzzled, unhappy expressions on all faces. 3. Smiling faces seem to be indicative of something at Faculty Reception, but we wonder what caused Dawn Marie to go to sleep? 4. Again registration lines — r did Chester wear his arm out filling out cards? 5. Just one glamorous part of the student line at the Faculty Reception. 6. Evelyn Schmidt was not present. Behind that little sign of advice, The thing that costs the least — and does the most — is just a pleasant smile, is one of the busiest offices on the campus. The Busi- ness Office staff — Lakin, Dolan, Davis, McCook, Rader, Jackson, Hilton, and Smith — pause a moment to get together for a picture. The Registrar ' s Office means grades to some people, but to others it means much more. The duties of the staff in this office range from admission to graduation, and usually the Registrar ' s Office is a student-appointed informa- tion bureau. Lois Rutledge, Frances Melton, Miss Pearl A. It meets once a month, the place of meeting alternating between the various fraternity houses and Kuykendall Hall. The purpose of the organization is twofold. Not only does the Interfraternity Council seek to harmonize relation- ships between the several sororities and fraternities; but also it acts as coordinator between the Greek groups and the Independent groups on the campus. The Council aids in stabilizing Greek problems, supports various campus activities, and often introduces or promotes new activities which may be of value either to the Greek organizations or to the entire campus. The Interfraternity Council deserves much more recognition than it actually receives. So also do the Men ' s Pan- hellenic and Women ' s Panhellenic groups which work under and along with the Interfraternity Council. These groups also are composed of two representatives from each Greek fraternity, and they meet once a month to discuss problems relating to their respective groups. Their purpose is practically the same as that of the Interfraternity Council, but these groups function on a smaller scale and closer to the individual Greek groups. All three of these groups operate according to a procedure set up by National Panhellenic Council, and function accordingly. They are the valuable link which joins the Greeks on the campus and which links the Greeks with the other organizations on the campus, for the benefit of all. STUDENT SENATE President: Charley Harnest Vice-President: Joe Stansell Secretary: Frances Deckard Not Pictured: Hardin J., Roesler D. The Student Senate is Southwestern ' s functioning organization of student government. Members are nominated by each class and voted on by the respective classes in the spring. All nominees must be approved by the faculty. The Senate meets regularly each week to discuss matters of importance to the student body and decide questions relating to student government problems. The Senate also has been responsible recently for many new projects and improvements made around Southwestern. Their tireless efforts and determination to gain for the Southwestern students the advantages and opportunities available on larger campuses have met with high commendation and approval from both students and faculty. First Row: Bill Ayres, Helen Earle Black, Darlene Brucks, Dwight House, Curtis Ledbetter Second Row: Eldon Mays, Jake Shelley, Joe Stansell, Rebecca Tittle HONOR COUNCIL Plans for an Honor Council at Southwestern originated with the Student Senate in the spring of 1948. The actual organ- ization became effective in the fall of 1949, following a vote of the student body. Members of the Honor Council were nominated by the Student Senate, approved by the administration, and elected by the student body as a whole. This Honor Council is the first real step toward complete student government. The honor system at Southwestern is based on the principle that a student when placed on his honor will not violate this trust. Under this Honor Council, both students and faculty have certain responsibilities, and the Honor Council acts as coordinator and mediator. It acts as the judge of all charges made as a result of violation of the honor system. The Chairman of the Council is the Vice-President of the Student Association, this year Joe Stansell. Membership of the Council consists of the Chairman, two members each from the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes, and two members from the Student Senate, a total of nine members. Dwight House and Rebecca Tittle are the representatives from the Senate, Bill Ayres and Helen Earle Black are the representatives from the Senior class, Eldon Mays and Jake Shelley from the Junior class, and Darlene Brucks and Curtis Ledbetter from the Sophomore class. So far the Honor Council has been most effective, and the fact that all meetings are conducted secretly is beneficial to all concerned. The members of the Honor Council have a responsibility not to be belittled; the success of the plan and the possibility of future extension of student government rests on them. Each year a secret faculty committee nomi- nates certain such students from among the senior group for membership in Who ' s Who. These candidates are approved by Who ' s Who, and members are officially notified of their membership and honor. Each year Who ' s Who publishes a book entitled Who ' s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and it is in this volume that the honored students receive their prime recognition. Included in the volume are a brief biographical sketch of the student and also a sketch of the student ' s college career. Membership in Who ' s Who is a sig- nificant honor highly prized by all college students, and Southwestern is extremely proud of its fine members. Members of the Texas Alpha chapter, the local society, are elected from among the top or ranking tenth of the junior and senior classes. All mem- bers elected to the local society become members of national Alpha Chi and are entitled to all its privileges. Its aims, according to the Constitution, are stimulation, development, and recognition of scholarship and character. Membership in Alpha Chi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be conferred upon a student of Southwestern. National Cardinal Key established a chapter here at Southwestern on May 14, 1948. The major purposes of the organization are: to recognize achievement in scholarship and extra-curricular activities; to advance religion, patriotism, and service by affording training for leadership in the college community; and to develop character by application of the Cardinal virtues of living. Cardinal Key corresponds to the Blue Key organization for men. Here at Southwestern it serves as an important link between students and faculty, and the work of Cardinal Key already has proven its worth many times over. C. A. COUNCIL At Southwestern University there is an organization designed specifically to co-ordinate the religious and other activi- ties on the campus. Consisting of the entire student body, certain persons are elected in a school-wide election to take charge of the functioning of the organization. The S. C. A. Council is the name given to this body of officers. This Council meets weekly to discuss and decide problems which arise concerning the student body as a Student Christian Association. Serving as a link between the student body, the M. S. F. at First Methodist Church, and all activities which may concern them, it also serves to strengthen the bonds between student and student, and student and faculty. The S. C. A. is a far more important organization than most of us realize. It is a vital factor in our life at Southwestern and every student should be aware of the far-reaching effect of the S. C. A. The Choir practices regularly every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; also, it sings for the chapel service held every Thursday. The Southwestern A Cappella Choir is known throughout the state of Texas for guality of singing and excellence of performance. The choir has sung in many churches and for many organizations, and it is welcomed everywhere. And nowhere is it as popular as right here at Southwestern, where everyone is familiar with it and its members. We of Southwestern feel that the A Cappella Choir deserves a special tribute for its fine work and prominence. Mr. John D. Richards, director of the A Cappella Choir, is also director of the Men ' s Glee Club and Women ' s Glee Club. Both of these groups are open to any who wish to join them, and their singing is par excellent. Both also have sung freguently for groups outside the Southwestern campus, and everywhere they have received only the highest praise. Here on the campus they are a source of delight and entertainment, and their singing is the bright spot of such functions as the May Fete and the occasional Assembly programs during which we are privileged to hear them perform. Southwestern is exceptionally proud of its musical organizations. Both students and faculty feel that the members of the Fine Arts Department make an invaluable contribution to Southwestern, and these music groups have become a basic part of the school functions. Action shot of the Southwestern University Band as directed by Mr. Ralph Jones — taken on the stage of the University Auditorium. SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY BAND The Southwestern University Band is one of the most popular organizations on the campus. Directed by Mr. Ralph Jones, it is composed of student musicians carefully selected and combined into a band of excellent quality. The band plays during Southwestern football games, providing unique half-time swing music; it also plays at many major school functions, especially the Carol Service and the May Fete. The band presents an annual Spring Concert, and close to the end of each year it is directed in an assembly program by Fine Arts majors specializing in this type of work. Southwestern is extremely proud of its band, and special plaudits go to the renditions of music from Oklahoma! and the Alma Mater. The chapter on the Southwestern campus received its charter last year, on April 24, 1948. Thus it is a comparatively new addition to the Southwestern roster of organ- izations, but even in this short time it has taken its place among the prominent and valuable organizations on the campus. The purpose of the fraternity is to foster musicianship among the women, create interest in American composers and musicians, create interest in local musical talent, and provide an opportunity for social fellowship for its members. The five charter members were Elmina Bell, President pro-tern of the organization, Frances Deckard, who is Secretary, Helen Cocke Goethe, Dorothy McLure, and Yvonne Wilson. The other girls were pledged to Delta Omicron this fall. In order to be initiated, they must fulfill the standards and purposes maintained by Delta Omicron, and also maintain a certain aver- age in school work and music work. Southwestern is proud of its chapter of Delta Omicron; and with such talent as has been displayed this year, there is no doubt that Delta Omicron will progress, enlarge, and become more and more valuable through the years. f Car , 1 :J If s First Row: Bell, Blocksom, Cannon, Deckard Second Row: Heinsohn, Holloway, Hubbard, Jones Third Row: McLure, McNallen, Webb, Wilson MOZART SOCIETY President: Mary Lynn Webb Secretary: Yvonne Wilson Program Chairman: Barbara Cannon The Mozart Society is an organization of music students selected by the Music Faculty on the basis of outstanding performance. Its membership is restricted to juniors and seniors who have participated in two or more drama activities produced on .the campus. Its chief aims are to stimulate interest in and raise dramatic standards and achievement through encouraging the best individual and group efforts in play writing, acting, directing, costuming, stage technique, stage designing, research, and literature. Membership in Pi Epsilon Delta is con- sidered one of the highest honors that can come to a drama student at Southwestern. 1. Years Ago — Ford Ainsworth, Rosie Morris, and Nancy Foster 2. Our Town — Edgar Loessin, Nancy Medley, Sheridan Cavitt, Jerry Hardin, Clara Mae Blocksom, Dana Green, Ruth Lewis The fourth production of the year, A Midsummer Night ' s Dream will not be presented until next month. MASK AND WIG The Mask and Wig Players is an organization of students interested in the study of the drama. Spon- sored by Mr. Angus Springer, head of the Speech and Drama Department, Mask and Wig is open for membership at the beginning of each semester. Students become Associate Members upon joining and paying dues; and after they have obtained five points through active service, they may become Active Members. The club now has about thirty active members. The aim of the organization is to create stu- dent interest in drama, provide a practical study of the drama, and serve as a source for presentation of famous and current plays. Mask and Wig ' s first production of this year was Ruth Gordon ' s Years Ago, directed by Roger Busfield. Starring Rosemary Morris, Ford Ainsworth, and Nancy Foster, Years Ago revealed a vivid picture of Miss Gordon ' s home life and New England family during her senior year in high school. A highly successful autobiographical comedy, Years Ago was truly indicative of the talent in Mask and Wig. The second production was Sidney Howard ' s The Silver Cord. This is an excellent drama dealing with the problem presented by a mother who cannot release her children to live their own lives. The entire cast, consisting of Clara Mae Blocksom, Edgar Loessin, Barbara Bailey, Jerry Hardin, Ruth Lewis, and Mildred Ellett, did a splendid job of dramatic characterization. Our Town, the third production, written by Thornton Wilder and directed by Angus Springer, was presented in a manner new to most Southwestern students. Here called the Theatre-in-the-Round, the method of stage production is also known as the Intimate Theatre or Familiar Theatre. With Edgar Loessin as Stage Manager, Sheridan Cavitt, Nancy Medley, Ruth Lewis, Jerry Hardin, Clara Mae Blocksom, and Dana Green, the play was a tremendous success. We hope that Mask and Wig will produce more plays in the Theatre-in-the-Round in the future. William Shakespeare ' s A Midsummer Night ' s Dream is scheduled for the fourth production of the year. Judging by the presentation of As You Like It last year, it should be a grand climax. Mask and Wig is endeavoring to present at least one Shakespearean play a year, and these productions are always tops with Southwestern students. V ALONE SEE INSIDE The So uthwestern Magazine is a monthly literary publication which endeavors to present a good cross-section of literary work done by the students themselves. We found that the Editorial Staffs above differed slightly, so we published both of them. The magazine is a part of the trio sponsored by the Board of Publications, and material which appears in it is carefully selected and adapted to the enjoyment of the reader. There is also in the maga- zine art work of very fine quality, and excellent snapshots and photographs of interest to everyone. The picture before was taken one day before the Magazine deadline — staff hard at work. Reimen- schneider and Gregory are seated. Editor Meredith points out joke to Strickland. Baker, Folse, Vallone, Gallaway confer while Harvey McDonald studies Advertising layouts. There are, obviously, some absent from picture — notably McGee (photogra- pher), Loessin, Roesler, House, Patterson, Blank, Lewis, Bass, Hulburd, Moses, Geppert, and Abra- ham Lincoln. Ditto individual contributors too num- erous to mention, but who receive the grateful ap- preciation of all the staff. Published annually, it is a record of all the students and activities on the Southwestern campus during the year. An annual remains a prized possession for years. It is both a scrapbook and photograph album shared by all — a history of the year — and in it are stored memories of the best years of our lives. An annual is rather like a cupboard. Turning each division page is opening another door, and the pages are the shelves lined with all the precious goodies which once tasted so delicious. Each page begins a chain of memory which slowly traces its way back through the days of companionship and learning — the days of youth and fun — the days at Southwestern. Memory blows across the mind and heart as a gentle wind. The wind may be full of joy or sorrow, laughter or tears — it is the wind of Southwestern — it is the Sou ' wester. During the deadline rush these people didn ' t even stop for the camera. We see Barbra Horn, Faculty Editor Pat Lane, Photog- rapher Harper McGee, Senior Class Editor George Prigmore, Edi- tor Nancy Mackenzie, and Fresh- man Class Editor Virginia Robbins huddled around the desk which was the center of operations. 1. Snapshot Editor Ed Hartwell, as- sisted by Nell Lowman, works dili- gently to make pictures fit. 2. This little group — Alice Mayfield, Nell Lowman, Sophomore Class Editor Jane Baltzer, Sports Editor Fred Switzer, and Jean Howard — get together to plan some layouts. 3. Organization Editor Madge Thorn- all and Editor Nancy Mackenzie find something to laugh about in the pic- ture to which Photographer Harper McGee is pointing. Must be that one of Charlie Dennis. APPRECIATION An annual is not the product of a few people. True enough, it takes a staff and lots of hard work to edit an annual. But it is YOU who have made this annual. It is you — students, faculty, administration, friends, advisors — everyone connected with Southwestern. All of you have had a part in producing this ' 49 Sou ' wester. Without your partici- pation, help, and encouragement, it could never have been possible. My very special thanks go to those who have given their time and effort over and over again — Mr. Knox, who has answered countless guestions — Mr. Lee Karr, who has shown infinite patience at developing pictures — Mrs. Ferguson and Dr. Berglund, who have lent lists, information, and moral support — Harper McGee, who has provided the excellent student activity snapshots — again Mrs. Ferguson, without whose advice and help the Beauty Dance would never have been possible — Mr. McCook, who has given time and education to the Editor — all the people who have helped to cut and paste such as Barbra Horn, Martha DeLaFosse, Jean Howard, Nell Lowman, Alice Mayfield, Elaine Wagner, Adele Butler — all those who were ever willing to run errands for both editor and staff — and all those who contributed an invaluable aid with their constant encouragement and cheerful visits to the Tower Room. So many have helped in so many different ways that it is difficult to mention them all — but to all of them — and to all the members of the staff of ' 49 — go my deepest thanks for everything. la+iaf, Mackenzie ALLEGRO FOOTBALL i ' k £ ' $ Coach Harold Spot Collins, Co-captain Jimmy Jonas, and Coach Jack Sleepy Harris The 1948 Football season was a building one for the Pirates of Southwestern University. Starting with a new head coach, new assistant coach, and practically a new team, the Pirates finished conference play with the best won-and- lost record since the war. Under coaches Collins and Harris, the Pirates started off the season with a 60-0 win over Brooke Army Medical Center and followed up with a 33-0 win over Daniel Baker. Next the Pirates journeyed to Abilene where they suffered their first defeat at the hands of the Abilene Christian Wildcats 27-0. The Bucs then hit a three-game winning streak defeating East Texas Baptist College 41-0, upsetting Howard Payne 3-0, and then handing Austin College a decisive 28-0 setback in a thrilling Homecoming game. Hardin College broke the Pirates ' winning streak with a 14-7 victory. The Bucs suffered their third defeat of the year at the hands of the Conference champion McMurry Indians. The Pirates ended the season in fine style with a 7-0 victory over the University of Corpus Christi in the Fish Bowl in Corpus. Bob Koenig and Bobby Castanon, tackles; Henry Sheppard, center; Curtis Ledbetter, end; and Glen Swenson, guard; played brilliant football during the regular season and all received recognition in All-conference selections. Practically all the conference schools had powerful cage aggregations in the 1949 title race and the Bucs had to battle to keep from being com- pletely outclassed, which they never were. All the men on the squad played their hearts out and deserve a hearty well done from Pirate sports fans. Since every student has the opportunity to play with one group that is represented in league play, there is at all times splendid interest in the Intramural program which is composed of football, basketball, and softball. These three sports are included in the intramural program which the Athletic Department conducts each year. The success of the intramural sports this year has been due to a large extent to Coach Medley, Head of the Athletic Department. Also our thanks go to Don Roesler who not only was captain of the intramural program, but also worked as Sports Editor for the Megaphone in Intramurals most of the year. FOOTBALL In intramural football the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the Kappa Alpha Fraternity tied for the championship for 1949. Since both teams had identical win-and-lose rec- ords, there was a play-off. This game ended in a tie, 6-6. The two teams were then named co-champions. In third place were the A Independents. Their fine record of four wins and two losses is proof of the strong team that they had. One of the hard- est fought games of the year was the play-off between the A Independents and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity for third place. This game ended 6-0 in favor of the A ' s and the Kappa Sig ' s slipped from third to fourth place. FINAL STANDINGS (FOOTBALL) Team W L T Pet. Pts. Op. The A Independent team came out of the race with the best record with nine wins and two losses. One of the losses was handed to them by the second place Kappa Sigma team which ended with a won-and-loss record of nine wins to three losses. Both teams had shown throughout the season fine offense and defense play. A close game of 31-30 gave the Kappa Sigma team an edge over the strong Pi Kappa Alpha team in one of the most thrilling play- off games of the year. This game was won in the last two seconds of play by a field goal by Robert Weyman. The Kappa Alpha team dropped from an impressive lead after the first round of play to rest in fourth place in final league standings. g O ' Ifl.f f 7 K A t PI KAPPA ALPHA FRATERNITY 1948 CO-INTRAMURAL LEAGUE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS KAPPA ALPHA FRATERNITY f $ I r KAPPA SIGMA FRATERNITY PHI DELTA THETA FRATERNITY DOLCISSimO m , m JwpilP MISS MARTHA JANE WILLIAMS MISS SOUTHWESTERN MISS LUCILE WALKER ALL SCHOOL BEAUTY Hi  . fc MISS VIRGINIA BURNS ALPHA DELTA PI BEAUTY IF -r y - . ■if j ?, { I V MISS DE [E BRODHAX DELTA DELTA DELTA BEAUTY MISS EVELYN.
