THE 1947 PIRATE SQUAD SHELLEY SMITH, Manager FOOTBALL Although Southwestern ' s Pirates won only three games of a nine game schedule during the 1947-48 season, many of the games were close, the Bucs bowing out of the contest in the closing minutes of play. The Bucs opened the season ' s play by journeying to College Station where they dropped a one-sided contest to the Texas Aggies, 48-0. The Farmers, running from a single wing formation, featuring 200 pound backfield men and even larger linemen were never in serious trouble with Coach Medley ' s much smaller T formation men. After a week ' s rest, to recuperate from the A M squabble, the Pirates took slight revenge on the Sailors of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Training Base in Corpus. The Bucs clipped the flying sailors wings 8-2. The next week-end saw the Pirates drop their home-coming game to the Wild- cats of Abilene Christian College 14-0. Although the Bucs lost this one by two touchdowns, the large home-coming crowd was not disappointed as the Pirates played the powerful Wildcats a good game. Daniel Baker College found no mercy at the hands of a mad Southwestern squad and went down in front of the Bucs flying cleats 25-0. The Bucs lost to Howard Payne College in Brownwood the following weekend, 19-6, but returned to Georgetown and trounced East Texas Baptist College on Snyder Field 13-0. The following week saw the Pirates drop a very close decision to the Austin College Kangaroos in Sherman 7-6. Hardin College nosed the Bucs out of a victory in the closing minutes of a game played in Wichita Falls 15-13. The last game of the season, played on Snyder Field saw the Bucs fall before the onslaught of a big. powerful aggregation from McMurry College 27-0. The importance of the Intramural Athletic program has been stressed by the Athletic Department with the awarding of an Intramural Plaque each year to the organization which accumu- lates the most points in all three events — football, basketball, and Softball. Points are given in ac- cordance with the final standings at the end of each sport. If the number of people present at the games, the keen rivalry between teams, and the long hours of planning and practice is any indication of the interest which has been shown by the entire student body; then .this year ' s program has certainly been worth while. Last years ' winners of the Intramural Plaque were the A Independent group. With a tie for first place in football, a fourth place in basketball, and a tie for first place in Softball, this year ' s winners are the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Second Row: SREATHOUSE, ROESLER, SMITH and CURTIS. This year football interest increased as large crowds witnessed many bitter and hard fought games. The teams were well organized, and it took careful planning to be a winner. It would be difficult to choose any one game as the most out- standing, but as the season drew to a close with the league leading Sigs coasting along undefeated, there was one obstacle in their path — the A Independent team. On the afternoon of November 20, 1947, this contest took place. When the dust cleared, the score was A Independents 20, Kappa Sigma 12. Truly this was the game of the year. First Row: O ' HARA, TOWNSEND, MAYES, and BOX. Second Row: DESCHER, BREEDING, ROBINSON, HECKMAN, and LOCKEY. - 1 9 If - 1 i Standing: SALIBO, DITTMAR, DAVIS, STONE. Seated: WEISS, PARMELEE, MICHAELS. The basketball season this year was full of many thrilling and spectacular games. Good crowds were seen each night drifting toward the gym where they were sure to see fast and exciting entertainmnt. Although having only a fair football team, the Kappa Alpha Fraternity came forth with a speedy and smooth working quintet that lost out only in the play-offs to the A Independent team who won their first two starts in a two out of three series. Both teams had fine offensive players dropping the ball in the loop from all over the court. The standing continually changed through the season with a play-off needed for not only first and second places, but also third and fourth. V Standing: JOHNSON, BEAN, MASON, SELF. PACK. Seated: ATKISON, DeSIREY, HAMMOND, HARRIS, OLNEY. HiaJlSKi Standing: JOHNSON, PEAVEY, BEAN, FLINN. Seated: DeSIREY, BENSON, SELF, MASON. There was a double round robin played in Softball with each team playing the others twice. At the close of the first round the Kappa Sigma Fraternity was tied with the Kappa Alpha Fraternity at six wins and a loss, but during the last games both organizations lost two more games. The B Independent team, only a moderate team during football and basketball, kept on the heels of the winners throughout league play. It was during the Softball season that the teams were issued special equipment — thanks to Joe Evans, the Intramural Director. :p ' •■ ' «; ' , - ' W k ■ ■:; DEAN W D BLUNK Government MRS. Westminster College has been selected by the Rural Church Department of the Board of Missions of the Methodist Churches as one of the several schools in the United States to give special attention to training ministers and lay workers to serve in the rural field. Part of this work in giving guidance to student preachers serving rural churches in the area, by helping in the preparation and delivery of sermons, assisting in setting up and carrying out programs in the churches, and giving aid in compiling reports. Another phase of the work is the attention given to students who are Life Service volunteers. These and other interested students become members of deputation teams. The work of these students is extra-curricula. Four of the students pictured above served as student pastors during 1947-48. The others made numerous appearances in the churches near the school. During the year this group or- ganized The Student Council for Christian Action, whose aims and purposes are to foster adoption and development of Christian ideals in others as well as to cultivate their own Christian growth. It is expected that this Council will give helpful leadership in all matters related to the development of the religious life on the campus of Westminster. Mr.Carnes supervises this work at Westminster. WESTMINSTER ' S WORK PROGRAM Although Westminster Junior College is one of the oldest schools in the country, it boasts a new and unique feature: a work program. During the past year many students have paid all or part of their expenses by work on various projects. As this program develops and becomes more self-sustaining with the shops producing marketable products, more and more jobs will be available to students. Two new shops and a student recreation building have been erected on the campus. The school has farms, gardens, an orchard, and plans for other projects which are being rapidly developed. C. A. Moore is Supervisor of this work program.
