For him they will never lose their value, but become more precious as year follows year. Just as a jewel reflects the light that is flashed upon it, so will each page reflect the light of golden days. Let this chest of treasures be for him more than a mere collection of flashing baubles. Each is mellow with a deeper meaning, because each represents the po- tential power of men and women about to take their places in a world greatly in need of assurance. Life, like the gem, has myr- iad surfaces. Let the one who opens this chest look to the inner depths of the real source of beauty. Foreword Before the rough gem becomes a thing of dazzling symmetry, it must pass through many hands which plan, cut and polish it: so it is with our lives. All with whom we come in contact aid in fashioning and directing the shape of our characters. The perfect gem comes from the hands of a sure and precise craftsman. Such a man is Dr. William Finch, who has guided our thinking along worthy planes. To him we respectfully dedicate this treasure chest. Dedication 1 Shirley Morris Dear Shirley, Remember me? I ' m the girl who lives four doors down from your old room. This is a foolish way to start a letter, and yet, there is much I ' ve wanted to tell you, and now the only way I can is by writing a letter. We weren ' t the closest of friends. In fact, I didn ' t know you well enough, but how I treasure the moments we spent together! You see, you gave me, unknowingly, a gift that theretofore I had never received: the gift of courage. Oh, I don ' t mean that I had any complexes. What I ' m trying to say is that you had the cour- age of fight against all of life ' s major as well as minor tragedies. It wasn ' t that you ever mentioned courage to me, for you didn ' t; it was your everyday manner that made me aware of your tre- mendous resources. Now your room is empty and I no longer have you as my guide — at least, not as an earthly guide. Our talks, Shirley, have been discontinued, but I shall always remember your hum- anness and spunk. It ' s odd the way people will wait until it is too late to pay tribute to one who deserves it. I ' m one of them, but I feel that perhaps you might know about this letter, and understand it. I pray that this might be. I thank you immeasurably for letting me know you, Shirley, and for giving to me, (and I was not the only one), enough strength of character with which to face my tomorrows with self-respect. This you ' ve done to me by being, forever in my heart and in the hearts of all who knew you, Shir- ley Morris. As always, Your friend. Busfield, Switzer, Vern, Harrell, Renfro After a few months of inactivity, the Southwestern Magazine resumed publica- tion in the summer of 1946. Howard Young took over the editorship and put out six issues. During that time the magazine published several of John Patrick ' s stories and introduced Myriam Vern ' s poetry and prose. At midterm of 1947 George Harrell became editor and has put out four copies to date. Three of the covers are reproduced on the oppcsite page. The February is- sue featured James O. McCorquodale ' s art and made quite a sensation with its many-colored paper. Stuart Van Orden took over as art editor in March and de- signed the next three covers. The April Magazine was a literary issue. In it were stories from the Creative Writing class and from other writers on the campus. The May issue introduced Lar- ry Meredith as a writer. In 1946-47 the Southwestern Magazine has introduced known and unknown writ- ers, indicated what is going on in creative art on the campus, and has covered what it considered might be of permanent interest and value. Southwestern has always been noted for its outstanding bands, and this ye ar it is no exception. Whether leading the Homecoming Parade, playing at the football or basketball games, or in Assem- bly, our Pirate Band has thrilled the audience. By November, their pupils were convinced, and shortly thereafter we were all convinced of their high ability in the teaching and directing of musical organizations. These two men were Mr. John Richards, director of the Choir and Chorus groups, and Mr. Ralph Jones, director of the Band and Sinfonietta. On the preceeding and following few pages are pictures and write-ups of the individual organizations, with the ex- ception of the Sinfonietta, which unfortunately doesn ' t seem to have had its picture made. With Mr. Richards as their director, they have included in their list of successful works Folk Songs of other nations, Negro Spirituals, Classical and Religious numbersThey have on many occasions provided the music for the weekly Chapels as well as the music for Church. Their out-of-town trips took them to Brownwood (Daniel Baker College), Weatherford, Tehuacana, Mexia, Temple and San Antonio. The Southwestern Pirates were triumphful in their football season with five wins, four defeats, and a tie. This record, more impressive than figures seem to indicate, made it possible for the Buc ' s to win a co-championship of the Texas Conference with A.C.C. The Pirate eleven had a full schedule of rough games, including frays with two Southwest Conference teams, Rice and Baylor. Not particularly strong on reserves, the Pirates placed six of their starters on the All-Conference team. The Buc ' s began the season by bowing to Baylor University 21-7 in a hard-fought, evenly matched contest. The machine-like Oklahoma City U. eleven proved too much for the determined Pirates, however, and trampled the local boys 54-0. The Southwest Conference champions — the powerful Rice Owls — defeated the Pirates the next week in a hectic game, 48-0. The team tied A.C.C. the next weekend in an all-important conference game 12-12. The Pirates ' winning touchdown was prevented from materializing when Bare was unable to catch Bean ' s pass because of an official. This proved to be the fateful play of the season, because both teams won all other conference games. The Buc ' s downed Howard Payne 33-7 in the first 170 SECOND TEAM — left to right: Bratton, Wilson, Gray, Cobb. scey, Huggins, Pack, Guinn, Hamric, Jonas, Moore, home game of the season. In San Antonio, the mighty Pirates devastated a comparatively weak Randolph Field team 77-0, with Jim Francis kicking eleven straight conversions for a record. The winning Pirates took two in successive home games from Southeastern Oklahoma Teachers 21-6, and the homecoming game with Austin College 34-0. The last conference game, played in Abilene, completed the Pirates ' undefeated conference play with a 41-0 victory over the McMurray Indians. The Buc ' s finished the season with a 34-20 defeat at the hands of ths Louisiana Tech eleven. Much credit is due the coaching staff of R. M. Medley, G. F. Smith and Eddie Bryant for their fine work in handling the team. Max Jones, one of the finest centers in S.U. history, wen the mainstay of the line while the Pirates ' wonder-boy, Joe Evans, starred in the backfield. Along with these Dan Davenport, a bulwark at tackle; Frankie Means, a splendid quarterback; Ed Butler, an aggressive guard, and the sensational Ted Bare at end; claimed honors on the All-Conference team. Other dependables of the starting team were Eddie McFarland and Zack Moore, guards; Speedy Chafin, tackle; Bill Vernon and Jim Francis in the backfield. Many others proved stalwarts, with the team generally being a hard-working, capable group of athletes. 171 FRANK MEANS — Back Two Year Letterman The only four sport letterman in modern Southwestern history. The victory was short-lived though for a loss was in store for the Bucs at the hands of the Aggie Bees. This loss was very efficiently and completely avenged at a return duel here in George- town in which the Bees were thoroughly trounced by the score of 16-4. Southwestern went ahead to complete one of the most successful baseball seasons seen here at S. U. The Pirates would beyond a doubt have won the Texas Conference Championship if the conference had chosen to participate in baseball. Outstanding for the Pirates were: Bill Hartley, Dave Switzer, and Frank Means. Most of these boys will be back next year and budding young stars such as Richard Lynch will be grizzled veterans of tomorrow.
