Oglesby and Robert Emerson Coleman, spread the already famous name of Southwestern University throughout the entire Southwest. The string of victories β€” 17 wins out of 23 debatesβ€”hung up by this learned team, merely serves to emphasize their superior ability as debaters. Coleman, three-year star debate letterman at Sunset High of Dallas, and Oglesby, former ace debater at Denison High School and at Southern Methodist University, collaborated during the ' 45 season to down such schools as Tulsa University, the University of Arkansas, Louisiana State, Baylor University, Arkansas State Teachers College, A. In another sense, it was a Building year. The Pirates, with many new recruits taken from the high school teams of the state, won only two games while losing six and tying one. While the season was not victorious, it laid the ground work for better, more experienced teams in the postwar days. On July 8, 1945, Coach Medley held his first practice session. Few experienced lads were back, and athletes just out of high school were called upon to fill in the gaps. Swede Ruthstrom, Joe Evans, Ernest DeWald, H. K. Allen, Dick Westkaemper, Bryan Taylor, Eddie Blodzinski, Dan Davenport, and Bob Hollo- way furnished the nucleus around which the team was patterned. First on the Pirates ' tough schedule was Bergstrom Field. Publicized as one of the best service teams in the nation, the Carriers were heavy favorites. The plucky Pirates fought determinedly, however, and while leading during most of the game, were forced to submit to a tie late in the ball game. Swede Ruth- strom starred for the Bucs. Texas Tech was invaded by the Buccaneers, and in a hard-fought game, repulsed the Red Raiders. Tech ' s Walt Schlinkman scampered 50 yards for the game ' s only score. Allen, Evans, Leary, Blodzinski, and DeWald were standouts in the Pirate ball club. The Pirate banner w as next seen at Memorial Stadium in Austin, where the crippled Bucs were handed their worst defeat of the season by the Conference-winning Texas Longhorns. Williams and Allen played stout ball as the Steers rolled over Southwestern 40-0. The brightest spot in the football picture of Southwestern was the Rice game. Here the Pirates broke the ice as they came from behind to trample Rice 13-7. The Pirates continued their winning streak by overpowering the University of Mexico Pumas in a hard- fought tilt in Alamo Stadium in San Antonio. The Pirates got rolling and scored five touchdowns to win 32-6. Terminating the season with its sixth loss, the Pirates encountered the Hondo Army Airfield team. And thus ended the Pirates ' season β€” a season filled with victories and defeats, glory and heartbreak. A record achieved to be proud of under the circumstances β€” a record that fails to show the full accomplishments of the Pirates. ROSS DAVIS β€” GUARD JOHN ULREY β€” GUARD JAMES ARTHUR FRANCIS β€” GUARD The Pirates wrote another glorious page to the history book of Southwestern athletics, as they took the Texas Conference Basketball Crown by winning thirteen out of fourteen conference games. From a meager beginning the Pirates, coached by R. M. Medley, were molded into a fast, polished cage guintet. Texas University downed the Buc ' s 47-28 in their original encounter, only to be able to sgueeze out a narrow victory of 52-47 in the return contest. The Buc ' s displayed power as they swamped San Marcos 65-37, and became Conference favorites when they smashed Howard Payne 57-27 and A.C.C. 61-42. Howard Payne again fell to S.U. ' s superior agility and skill 74-39. McMurry provided bait for the rampaging Pirates ' fifth straight victory 34-33. A.C.C. eked out a nar- row victory, 32-31, the following night. The Southwestern lads, angered by their one point defeat, took it out on Austin and San Marcos as they trampled these two teams 64-45 and 59-21, respectively. The University of Houston, in one of the most thrrilling games imaginable, defeated the Pirates 42-40 in the last eight seconds of a non-conference game. The stalwart Buccaneers then bested Austin College 61-38, and trimmed McMurry 62-36. With this win, the Pirates were assured of at least a tie for first place. VK ROBERT HAMRIC DAN NELSON DAVENPORT THEODORE CHRISTIAN BARE The battle for the conference crown with TWC proved to be one of the roughest and most spirited contests of the school ' s basketball history. The Pirates won 19-16 in the closing minutes of the game. The regular season was terminated by a 58-57 victory over the University of Hous- ton. In a special tournament, Southwestern lost to West Texas State 50-44. The team itself was composed of tall John Ulrey, Ross Davis, and Jim Francis, (used interchangeably) at guards; Dan Davenport at center; and Ted Zippo Bare and Bob Hamric at forwards. Ulrey and Francis, two of the most consistent members of the team, were from the ' 45 season. Davis was an all-state boy from Colorado. Dan Davenport, towering 6 feet 8V2 inches, formerly played for Rice. Forward Bob Hamric was the conference ' s leading scorer, while Bare was the most popular and colorful of all cagists. Eddins, Williams, Medley, and Jones also gave yeoman serv- ice to the Pirates ' victory cause. Hurdlers β€” Kenneth Goetzel, Joe Frazier, Bob Cole- man, Bob McCollough. As the annual goes to press, the track team has been feverishly preparing for the Texas Con- ference meet, the highlight of the 1946 track season. Throughout the months of practice, and the two meets attended, the Pirate thinly-clads have gained valuable practice and their share of laurels. At the beginning of the season, the Pirates had more than their share of difficulties. Track equip- ment was insufficient, the cinders were extremely loose, and for two months the little gray book served as coach. The first meet entered was the Fat Stock Show at Fort Worth. Southwestern hurriedly prepared and sent six boys to this event. Coleman ran the high and low hurdles. Pagel the mile, Budd and McMillen the half mile, Goetzel the low hurdles, and Cleavenger the quarter. Bob Coleman, sensa- tional young hurdler who set an all-Dallas record in the highs last year at Sunset, finished first in the low hurdles. O. T. Budd finished fourth in the half mile. Injuries proved the Nemesis of the Pirate tracksters, with Pagel pulling a muscle in the first lap of the mile run, and Coleman falling on the cinders after taking the lead in the highs. The track team began practice with renewed vigor after the first week, as more recruits came out. The next meet was the nationally important Texas Relays. Sending a hurdler, a sprinter, three weight men and two relay teams, the Pirates gained two points by placing fourth on both the relays. Coleman, Budd, Black, and McMillen in the Medley, and Budd, Smith, Cleavenger, and Goetzel in the Mile Relay, scored points for the Bucs.
