There was a penalty on this play of the S. M. U. game which Southwestern lost by a small margin. The score was 15-16. The Pirates went on a winning spree for the next three consecutive games. Pictured below is a play from the Rice game which the Owls beat us 7-18. On January 1, 1945, the Southwestern Pirates successfully defended the Sun Bowl championship against the contestors, the University of Mexico Pumas. The Pirates made an impressive win over the outweighed, outgamed Pumas by a score of 35-0. The game was held in El Paso at the Kidd Stadium on New Year ' s Day. The Pirates set two precedents: that of making the highest score ever made in the Sun Bowl and of being the first repeating champion to play there. JW Homl m FRONT ROW: Bowen, Butschek, Salibo. Putting up a grueling fight, the Pirates came out the victors over Kelly Field by the close margin of 55-53. Losing again, this time to McCloskey, the S. U. five then began a winning spree. Bergstrom, S. M. A. A. F., and Kelly Field became the victims of the South- western cagers. Cress Francis Hi 22 Ulrey Butschek The game against McCloskey became another loss to the Pirates ' books. This completed their basketball season in which they made a remarkable recovery from the first games ' disappointments. Butschek and Salibo distinguished themselves by vying for the honor of- high point man at each game. Salibo was named in the Blackland Army Air Field ' s All-Opponent Team. THIRD ROW: Ulrey, Stone, Bowen, Francis, Flores, Berry, Coach. QaiewzU Starting the baseball season for the Pirates was the opener with the Aggies. Southpaw Ward Cox held the Aggies to six hits and three runs to allow a win by the Pirates of 4 to 3. The Aggies return engagement here resulted in our defeat of 9 to 2. Ulrey pitched and Allen re- placed him in the 7th inning. The following day the Pirates made a spectacular win. In the last half of the 9th inning, the score stood 3-1, Aggie ' s favor! After letting 3 pass for balls, Frank Means hit 13 fouls before knocking one over the right field fence. The final score was 4-3. Francis comes in home as Stone goes around first. The day after the Aggie game, the Pirates jour- neyed to Austin to be beaten by Texas, 20-5. Three games in succession proved too much for the Pirates. The first four innings looked hopeful; but Ulrey ' s arm tired and Allen, less experienced, couldn ' t hold back the Longhorns. Seemingly in a rut, the Pirates lost the next game to San Marcos Army Air Field by the sum of 12 to Southwestern ' s 1. Rabb, running capless, is put out at first. A game with Texas was rained out, but South- western ' s prospects did not look too good. A decisive 13 to 7 win was obtained by the Pirates in a game with McClosky. Again the SMAAF ex-professionals vanquished the scrappy Pirates 9 to 1. As this goes to press, the season has not yet been completed with three more games slated. Blodzinski catching.
