Si • p$ The past three semesters have seen the growth of one of the greatest aggre- gation of athletes and athletic teams that Southwestern University has ever possessed. With the coming of the Naval-Marine V-12 Unit to the campus, Tiny Southwestern grew virtually overnight into an arsenal of sports that was more than capable of holding its own in any major sport with any south- western school. It is to those men who put aside their allegiance to other schools to fight for Old Southwestern that we proudly dedicate the Sports Section of the 1944 SOU ' WESTER. 43- 44 Pnxxyieu pq m Closi rious styles of pH spirit of coopex their old loyalti a smooth func I They finished ictories over  Bt Conferenc rkansas A. .d a final vie t y of New K, lf The onl} rd was a 1 omposed U. letter! The Pirates scored in the first, second and third periods as they rolled through, over and around a badly outplayed Aggie line. In all they moved 242 yards on the ground, with only 16 yards being added to their offensive total by passes. MORRIS BRATTOI S. U. GORDON HOLLOI Baylor U. JAMES DIXON Baylor U. ED BRASWELL U. of Texas Approximately 5,000 fans, most of them marines and sailors from the Ward Island Base, flocked to the Buccaneer Stadium September 25 to see the Pirates, the All Southwest Conference team, slosh and slide to an easy victory over the Ward Island Raiders to the tune of 54 to 0. Outstanding player of the game was Ken Matthews, who not only scored three touchdowns, but ran one right through the center of the line fifty yards over the goal line. Also starring in the game was Bo Robinson, a Baylor boy who made some beautiful runs and gave excellent intereference for ball carriers. ME h BILL CRAVEN Baylor U. D. A. The biggest day of the football season rolled around on October 2, when the Southwestern University Pirates, a great percentage of them Texas exes, journeyed to Memorial Stadium in Austin to play Dana Bible ' s Longhorns. The final score was 14 to 7, in favor of Southwestern. Bible ' s scrappy high- schoolers put up quite a fight, but the trained and experienced Pirates were too much for them in the end. CURTIS WILKERSON U. of Texas PAUL ADMIRE T. C. U. m- BILL HEARN T. C. U. On October 9, the Pirates demonstrated very clearly that their pass defense was a very acceptable companion to their immovable line as they smothered the aerial minded South Plains Army Air Forces ' Winged Commandoes 40 to in the Tech Stadium at Lubbock. The Bucs outclassed the airmen to the point where they never really faced any danger, the ball only twice coming within the Pirate 20. The following week, the Pirate squad played a return engagement against N.T.A.C. in Austin, and repeated their performance of the early season game by roundly defeating them 26 to 0. Superb ball playing was featured by both teams, but the N.T.A.C. squad was no match for the Pirate galaxy. Leo gosset j. of Texas .ESLIE PROCTOR J. of Texas ZUEHL CONOLY r J. of Texas BOBBY HENDERSON Baylor U. The Pirates suffered their first and only defeat of the entire season at the hands of S L I. in Rice Stadium the night of October 23. In one of the roughest games ever played in Houston, the Bulldogs from Louisiana dealt a stunning loss to the Southwestern eleven. The final score was 27 to 6. The Pirates just never got rolling that night. The Pirates came back from their defeat the following week and, although hampered by injured players that kept several starters out of the lineup man- aged to tie Tulsa ' s mighty Golden Hurricanes, 6 to 6. The tie broke Tulsa s record of fourteen consecutive victories. MAX JONES S. M. U. TUFFIE McCORMICl Baylor U. ED McFARLAND S. U. BUBO BARNET1 Baylor U. Coming from behind in a hectic second half, the Southwestern Pirates rambled over Bryan Air Base 20 to 6 to take their homecoming game after an eighty-yard run had given Bryan the lead early in the third period. The game was played in the Pirate Stadium on November 6, and climaxed a two-day celebration on the campus. R. L. Cooper scored twice, first on a twenty-eight-yard dash down the side- line, and his second on a seven-yard burst around left end. The first Pirate tally went to R. W. Magruder when he picked out a nice hole in the Bryan line to go over from the four. S,l ELDRIDGE ADAIR S.U. GEORGE BLOMOUIST S.U. MOOSE MILLER O.U. J. P. GRAVES S.U. J With only two men left who started the first game, but a remade team of those two, other early season starters and newcomers to the line-up on hand, Souhwestem routed an Abilene Air Base Military Police team in Abilene November 13, 45 to 6. The biggest thrills were furnished by Abilene in spite of their losing. Their score came on the end of an 80-yard run that followed a pass interception. Their line held only once, but that was for four downs when Southwestern had the ball on the one-yard line. Mitchell, Magruder, and Campbell scored for the Pirates. . ■ • R. W. MAGRUDER S. W. T. S. BAUMGARDNER U. of Texas Jim Mitchell scored a touchdown on three runs and Spot Collins converted for Southwestern November 20 during the first two minutes of play in Shreve- port, La., before a crowd of nearly 5000 and that 7 to score was the Bucs ' final margin of victory over Arkansas A. M. of Monticello. S. U. upset the dope sheets in beating out a victory over the favored A. M. team, and ultimately gained revenge for their defeat at the hands of S.L.I., for the Bulldogs lost to Arkansas. BUDDY BERRY U. of Texas R. L COOPER Baylor U. JACK SACHSE U. of Texas NELSON WEBERNICK S.U. In their last scheduled game of the season, the Southwestern Pirates rolled over the determined Rice Owls, 21 to 7, in Rice Stadium at Houston, Saturday, November 27, before nearly 5,000 shivering football fans. Leaders of the Pirates in this game were the two mighty marine ends, Hearne and Hollon, who were in on nearly every tackle, many of them behind the line of scrimmage. This was the Pirates ' second trip to Houston this season, and a check for the proceeds of the game between S.U. and S. L. I. was presented to Admiral J. O. Richardson, representing Naval Relief. £im B awi Playing the first bowl game in the long history of Texas ' oldest university and climaxing a brilliant season, the Southwestern Pirates outplayed the New Mexico Lobos, 7 to 0, in the annual Sun Bowl game in El Paso on New Year ' s Day. It was a beautiful 30-yard pass, pictured on the opposite page, from R. L. Cooper to R. W. Magruder in the last six minutes of the game that gave the Pirates their win- ning score over the determined Lobos. Statistics showed that the Pirates by far outplayed the Lobos, picking up 279 yards against 48. Both teams passed ten times, but the Pirates gained 65 yards in the air to the New Mexico team ' s 10. El Paso sports writers praised Cooper, Magruder, Collins and Campbell as the stars of the afternoon ' s action, although the performance of each player was near-perfect. After the touchdown pass in the last guartef, Collins neatly kicked the ball between the goal posts, and the game was over as far as excitement was concerned. At the close of the season, Coach Sheets and his men received an invitation to attend the annual intercollegiate A.A.U. tourna- ment in Kansas City: Due to the Navy ruling which limits the trainees ' absence from the campus to forty-eight hours, the Pirates declined the invitation. The darkhorse Bucs defeated Rice in a hot battle to cop fourth place in the tourney, coming out ahead of Rice, Texas Tech, Texas Christian University, and Phillips University. HINES V HEITMAN GOSS Out of Southwestern ' s sixteen main games, the Buc cagers won a total of twelve. They averaged fifty-five points per game throughout the season, and on the whole had as good a season as any team in the Southwest. . CARY I- V f o COZZENS MADDOX Vtack The track team had a short but fairly successful season. The team ' s main activities centered around two track meets, the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show Track and Field Meet, and the Texas Relays in Austin. The Bucs took third place at the meet in Fort Worth. Andy Cary was the individual high scorer of the meet, copping IOV2 of Southwestern ' s 26% points. Although not the biggest attraction in this year ' s Texas Relays in Austin on April 1, Southwestern proved what was probably the biggest surprise in the university and college division. The Pirates dug in on three events and tied with Texas A. M. in second place with sixteen points each, trailing the University of Texas. This about wound up the season for the track and field men, and although the season was short, it was pretty sweet. FRONT: Goss, Baumgardner, Howell, and Cary. REAR: Sims, Rados, Adair, Haley, and Lieutenant Giles. Baseball Baseball is still in progress as this book goes to press, and consequently a resume of the season ' s activities cannot very well be given. However, it can be said that the Pirate nine has done unusually well thus far. Coach Berry ' s team has beaten such teams as those from A. M., the Uni- versity of Texas, and a service team from McCloskey hospital in Temple, and the players ' high batting averages and excellent teamwork give promise of more victories in the future. t SITTING: Steel, Hughes, Newberry, Van Hooser, Velozo, Slope, Switzer, Giles, Hines, Mitchell, and Cooper. STANDING: Haley, Whitaker, Short, Blomquist, Chambers, Hollywood, Gosset, Shelton, Heitman, and Berry. Mjmr lenmi Like the track team, Southwestern ' s court men have not seen a great deal of action this Spring. In the games that they did play, however, they demon- strated that they had one of the leading teams of the South and Southwest. In their two encounters with the Universiy of Texas, the Bucs dropped the major portion of their games to the more experienced U.T. courtmen. Texas this year had what was considered the strongest unit in the state. The Bucs won over Texas A. M., however, Braswell and Bennett taking all their games, and the other players following close behind. Bennett and Braswell, Hartman and Raguse, and Mitchell and Hines were the doubles teams, and each man also played singles. FRONT: Raguse, Braswell, and Hines. REAR: Hartman, Bennett, and Mitchell. E. HARRIS, MANAGER Georgetown, Texas May 1, 1944 Southwestern University Georgetown, Texas Gentlemen: During the more than fifty years during which time it has been our pleasure to serve Southwestern University, never have we had more pleasant relations than during the 1943- 1944 Session. This year we have had the privilege of making many new- friends among the University community, and these acquain- tenances we shall cherish along with friends of long standing. Faculty, student body, and Naval personnel have all contributed to our sense of well being. Instead, therefore, of occupying this space in the SOU ' - WESTER with our usual formal advertisement, we should like to insert this personal message of appreciation in the 1944 issue. Our wish for Southwestern is many more years of useful- ness and service to the community. Yours very sincerely, C E.
