HERBERT LEE GRAY Yet in these ears, till hearing dies, One slow set bell will seem to toll The passing of the sweetest soul That ever looked with human eyes. A soul kindled with love for service amidst perils abroad and in long, loving devotion to youth at home, he has left with us a sacred memory of a Southwestern gentleman-scholar, passionately devoted to the advancement of his Master ' s Kingdom. His impress for good is deep in the life of the South- western he loved and made greater by his beautiful consecration, and she will ever treasure the memory of his devoted soul — Claud Howard. onthipe hc r Mt)ivcr$lt- «« 3etofc«, ® sxas March 29, i 943 D ear Students: to record } ? book ln w hich wo v, ich have meant ?S SS raont ?hose ° f a School. The Southwestern University Pirates opened the ' 42 season in good form  by defeating Lamar Junior College. Paul Gips tossed a soggy pigskin over the heads of the boys from Beaumont for a 13 to victory. Both touchdowns were made on passes to freshmen ends. The release was duly earned, as they had been right on the edge of the seat watching the best games yet in West Gymnasium. Although the Pirates were short on hit- ting the basket in the pinch, they never ceased to fight. The squad produced the best ball- handling aggregation Southwestern has had in years. Those games with Howard Payne and T. W. C. were thrillers that filled the gym with people and enthusiasm. The lack of accuracy around the basket put the Pirates down the list when the scores were added, but the Bucs certainly furnished the fast type of basketball everyone desired.
