3 oreu OF j The publication of this book marks the passing of another school year. We of the staff sincerely hope that herein each of you will find recorded those things which meant the most to you these months. This has been a joyous year, and it is pleasant to think on these things. Now, however, our thoughts and energies must be turned toward some- thing more vital. We must face the grim reality that our nation is at war. This tragedy comes nearer to us day by day as our brothers and friends go to defend the ideals for which they have stood. As the greater portion of the world is being darkened by gross ma- terialism, there is a danger that in the conflict we may lose sight of the true values of life. Thus do we realize the importance of our educational institutions. They must serve as beacons to keep the light of these truths ever bright so that those who are struggling for that which is right will not become engulfed in the storm and utterly perish. We do not plan to merely win this war, but after the war to preserve these values which we are now striving to inculcate. If these values are so cherished, they will become a guide to our conduct, so that those things calculated to protect civilization will not be lost to man.
