Wk M mm JIIr Jhe S tudents of S outhwestern l lnluerdlh present the y 1942 Sou ' wester • Editors LEE KARR MERRELLE ADKINS Business Manager DOUGLAS BENOLD Faculty Advisor DR. G. B. WOLCOTT 3 oreu OF j The publication of this book marks the passing of another school year. We of the staff sincerely hope that herein each of you will find recorded those things which meant the most to you these months. This has been a joyous year, and it is pleasant to think on these things. Now, however, our thoughts and energies must be turned toward some- thing more vital. We must face the grim reality that our nation is at war. This tragedy comes nearer to us day by day as our brothers and friends go to defend the ideals for which they have stood. As the greater portion of the world is being darkened by gross ma- terialism, there is a danger that in the conflict we may lose sight of the true values of life. Thus do we realize the importance of our educational institutions. They must serve as beacons to keep the light of these truths ever bright so that those who are struggling for that which is right will not become engulfed in the storm and utterly perish. We do not plan to merely win this war, but after the war to preserve these values which we are now striving to inculcate. If these values are so cherished, they will become a guide to our conduct, so that those things calculated to protect civilization will not be lost to man. ZMf XxX:?;Z oDedicau ion To Mr. M. L. Williams, a man who has given many years of invaluable service for the good of Southwestern and her students, this book is respectfully dedicated. President of Southwestern University Jhe - resident J Uuleui •i iccor ¥ Seven academic years have come and gone since I was asked to give my salutatory for the College Annual. Since then much water has gone by the mill. Southwestern has gone out of her first century of achievement into the second; out of staggering debt into a financial reserve; out of despair and gloom into hope and confidence; from a presidential salutatory to a presidential valedictory. It was a joy to watch the erection of the beautiful library and an inspiration to look upon our wonderful gym. Other presidents have built gyms and libraries, paid debts, increased endowment, and enlarged student bodies, but none before has ever been acclaimed President by the students. In this, you have made your President unique and he appreciates your loyalty and confidence. Because you loved me I have much achieved Had you not loved me then I could but failed. Because you trusted and believed I dared not disappoint and so prevailed. The president-elect will come to you wonderfully endowed and with a record of accom- plishments. Southwestern has the promise of vary greatly enlarged endowment and with your loyalty and splendid enthusiasm, may our beloved Southwestern go on to greater and ever greater achievement. They entered four Interstate Invitation tourna- ments, and at least one S. U. team went as far as the semi-finals in all four tournaments. Walker and Sneed reached the finals in the tournament at Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and brought home a nice trophy. The girls, Brad- shaw and Jones, were the most consistent win- ners. They reached the semi-finals in both the Waco and the Durant tournaments, and just for good measure went to quarter-finals in the tournament at Arkadelphia. Debate teams from A. I. at Kingsville, and from Mary Hardin-Baylor at Belton, were our guests on the campus during the debate season. The Corsair ' s smashing ground attack featured the game and previewed the type of football to be seen throughout the season. The following Saturday, the home team dropped its initial conference tilt to the Texas Wesleyan College Rams by the score of 15-6. The next Thursday the Bucs dropped a tough one to the San Marcos Bobcats by the count of 7-6. With seconds remaining in the final period, Whimpy Lampert, who had 5 9 minutes of rough and tough playing under his belt, broke through the Bobcat ' s offensive wall. A fumble by the Bobcats resulted and the charging tackle gathered in the ball, then urged his weary legs to the 15 yard stripe before being overhauled. The following week end, the Pirates journeyed to Abilene, only to lose a thrill-packed engagement to a strong Abilene Christian College team. Southwestern held the favored Wildcats in check until the final period, when the opponents chalked up 14 points for a 14-0 victory. An injury riddled Pirate team fell before the pennant-wining Howard Payne eleven on Snyder Field the next Thursday. Dutch O ' Neill raced 67 yards to tally for Southwestern in the 26-6 loss. The Pirate machine then began to click with a 13-6 victory over the Trinity University Tigers at Waxahachie, Medley ' s men showed a homecoming crowd some real football in an exhibition with the McMurry Indians. The game ended with the count 13-13, as statistics again failed to pay off for the home team. Next week the Pirates ran wild over the helpless Daniel Baker Hillbillies with a roaring 4 5-6 triumph. Then, a gallant Southwestern football team gained ultimate glory as it won its final game of the season for its beloved Dr. Bergin. A spirited Corsair eleven emerged from the field house at the beginning of the third period to defeat the Austin College Kangaroos to the tune of 19-13. The Pirates broke a 13-13 deadlock with a last minute surge, and the game was over. This spectacular finish, produced by a team playing its heart out, will be well imprinted in the annals of historic Snyder Field. Edens, Scarborough, H. ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT STUDENTS ' ASSOCIATION The Students ' Association is composed of each and every student in Southwestern. It is the means by which the students, through private initiative, govern themselves. The executive officers of the Association are President, Vice President, and Secretary. These officers are elected in an all-school election which is held during the Spring term. The legislative branch of the Association is the Student Senate. It is composed of five Seniors, four Juniors, three Sophomores, two Freshmen, three members of the Mood Hall Honor Council, and three members of the Laura Kuykendall Hall Honor Council. The judicial branch is the University Honor Court. It js composed of fourteen members: one each elected from each of the Greek organizations and seven elected from the Barb organization. The Mood Hall Honor Council and the Laura Kuykendall Hall Honor Council are subsidiaries of the Uni- versity Honor Court. During the Fall semester the students voted to readopt the Honor System. Under this System it is the duty of every student to maintain a high standard of integrity for himself and his fellow students. It is evident that the student body wants an Honor System and it is entirely up to the students to see that it works successfully. The constitution of the Student Government was rewritten so as to include the new Honor System.
