edicmfim AMoNG the few passengers who alighted when the morn- ing train arrived in Dallas one spring day in 1901, was a tall young man whose conservative apparel bore unmistakable evi- dence that he had lately come from the East. In his suit case was a sheepskin from Bellevue Hospital Medical College of New York, and diplomas attest- ing his completion of internships in Bellevue and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. The young man was going to be a doctor, and this was where he was going to practice. Dallas then boasted a population of 42,009 Together, this young doctor and the new community in which he began his professional career, were to grow and prosper. Edward Henry Cary is one of those fortunate individuals who can see the results of his handiwork in his own lifetime. His life has been dominated by two noble aims: to promote the civic growth of Dallas, and to advance the interests and improve the standards of his profession. His contributions in these two endeavors are clearly discernable in the length- ening shadows of a long and useful life. Before the end of his first year in Dallas, Doctor Cary was offered the Deanship of the Medical Department of Dallas University. Wlien this school was transferred to Baylor Uni- versity in 1903, he became the first Dean of Baylor Medical School, a position he held until 1922. He was Dean Emeritus from 1929 to 1943. For many years he held the chair of Professor of Ophthalmology. Meanwhile, he gained national recognition as a medical statesman. ln 1931, after hav- ing held the highest office in his county and state medical societies and the Southern Medi- cal Association, he was elected president of the American Medical Association. Previously he had served a term as Trustee of the Association and had been an active member in the leading national societies of his specialty. ln the Southwestern Medical College, Doctor Cary can see the culmination of his un- ceasing efforts to build in Dallas a medical school that is truly great in name, purpose, and deed. Here, in the projected Dallas Medical Center, the vision, the goal, and the deter- mination which he formed early in life, is brought to reality. Except for the spark of his determination there would be no Southwestern Medical Col- lege and no Dallas Medical Center. lt is peculiarly fitting, therefore, that this, the first student year book of the Southwestern Medical College should be dedicated to Edward Henry Cary, physician, educator, statesman, and gentleman.
