we sm 5 21.441141 ln 1940 the Surgeon General of the United States Army, then Major General George Mc- Gee, requested the organization of the 56th Evacuation Hospital to consist of faculty members. At a meeting of the Advisory Council of the medical college, Dr. Henry M. Winans, Prof- fessor of Medicine, was elected Unit Director and charged with the organization of the Unit. It might be said, however, that the unit practically organized itself. The response for volunteers was immediate and satisfactory. The hospital was complete as a unit by early in 1941 and with a very few changes remains the same today. The nurses were not added until 1942 when 32 were recruited from the Dallas area. The unit was called to active duty in April 1942, and spent the summer on maneuvers in Louisiana. Early in 1943 it was sent to Africa where it arrived just as the Tunisian campaign was ending. After a trip by convoy across North Africa it set up in Bizerte cmd played an important part in the Sicilian campaign. The 56th was in the Salerno landing and followed the Sth Army up the Italian Peninsula to spend a good part of the winter in the mud of the Volturna valley. It landed on the Anzio beachhead a few days after the initial landing and spent ten weeks there during which time it was subjected to over a hundred air raids and several enemy shellings. lt has continued to follow the 5th Army and is now functioning some place north of Rome. ln the period described it dealt with many thousands of cases, both medical and sur- gical, maintaining always a very low mortality rate. The unit as a whole received official commendation and many of its members have been decorated. There is no doubt but that it will continue its splendid work.
