Poker and Roulette Games Drew 500 Students to Union USL students found themselves in the spirit of the roar- ing twenties when the Games Committee sponsored Casi- no Night in the Union. Rally Part II Helped To Restore Budget Cut Approximately 3,000 USL students crowded into the Union Ballroom on July 14, 1971 to protest a $293,000 cut from budget made by the Governor. The rally was the sec- ond plea in two years by USL students to stop budget cuts to the badly needed funds for salary increases, library ma- terials, new equipment, and filling eleven vacant faculty positions. Student speakers Ray Allain, Joe Beck, Mary Jackson, Max Jordan, and Bob Pellegrin commented on the cut saying ... these armbands symbolize us, our unity, and the money we don ' t have. The rally ended with over 2,000 students marching to the Lafayette Courthouse to register to vote. The catering service from the Union provided free food to those wait- ing in lines to register. The students hoped to prove to the legislators that they have a voice in future elections and that they are interested in more money for higher educa- tion. At the start of the fall semester the 1971-72 budget cut was restored.
