I I I I i SOUTHWESTERN LOUISIANA INSTITUTE LAFAYETTE. LOUISIANA I I SOUTHWESTMI Southwestern was established in 1898, and its first session began on September 18, 1901. The establishment was brought about by State Senator Robert Martin, and the first land was donated by Mr. Crow Girard and his mother. The first buildings erected were Foster Hall, Martin Hall and a few shop buildings. The primary purpose in founding the Insti- tute was to provide the stimulus for state assistance to the development of education in the south and southwestern sections of Louisiana. In 1915 the College of Education was desic_ noted by the State Department of Educatiq . This was followed by the College of Liberal Arts. By 1938 the Departments of Agriculture and Home Economics were detached fronli PRESEmSli.. the other two colleges and organized into the College of Agriculture. In 1940 the College of Engineering was established. The main campus of the Institute consists 132 acres, most of which are in the limits of Lafayette. South of the campus is the Whit- •tington Farm of 525 acres, and the Dairy Farm of 125 acres. Since the erection of the original buildings, appropriations have been made by the legis- lature for the erection of the president ' s home IIS iiU in 1908, which was rebuilt in 1940, DeClouet Hall in 1904, Brown Ayres in 1909, Girard Hall in 1922, Science Hall in 1925, Buchanan and Judice Halls in 1927, and O. K. Allen Cafe- jteria in 1935. By 1940 Harris Hall, ' Evangeline Hall, the women ' s and men ' s gymnasiums, the student cen- ter, Mouton Hall, Stephens Memorial Library, McNaspy stadium. Saucier I Infirmary, Parker Hall, Burke Hall, I and F. M. Hamilton Training School has been erected. In 1949, three girls ' dormitories were erected; Lady Baker, Emily Huger and Beverly Randolph. VIEWS OUR PRESIDENT at A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENT BODY In this issue of L ' Acadien are reviewed many of the activities in which you, the students of Southwestern, have engaged during the academic year now ending. The administration and faculty are sincerely hopeful that the record may serve for many future years to vivify, by print and picture, the experiences which all college men and women cherish in retrospect. We offer our greetings and congratulations to the Senior Class of 1950 who are the editors of this volume. Sincerely, SOUTHWESTERN JOEL LAFAYETTE FLETCHER, B.S., M.S., D.S.C., L.L.D. Ballet scenes, modern dance patterns, and choral singing bound the selections into a compact bundle of entertainment. Selections v ere taken from Romberg ' s The Student Prince and New Moon , Lehan ' s Gold and Silver Waltz , Kern ' s Showboat and Tchaikowsky ' s Nutcracker Suite . The outstanding voices of Marilyn Nugent, Mary Ann White, Patricia Pill, Dan Peck, Alfred Marks, Ralph Rice, Ruth Taylor, Beverly Talbot, Janet Deboval, and Wayne Smith added to the beauty of the music. Grace Kloor and other dancers pro- vided the evenings dancing entertainment. To close the gayly beauty of the pageant, Miss Beverly Moncla was crowned queen with a crown of various colored Camellias by Judge Arthur W. Solomon, President of the American Camellia Society. Maids of Honor to Miss Moncla are Misses Julia Daigle, and Lois Riley. Other members of the court are Misses Lois Allen, Jacqueline Bourg, Donne Cochran, Ravera Fa-Kouri, Evelyn Lee and Dorthy Wilkes. Miss Moncla receives her crown of camellias from Judge A. W. Solomon To round out the 1949 Football season the Bulldogs played host to the Northwestern Demons for the Homecoming game. After a set back of 14-0 in the first quarter, the Bulldogs came back to win 27-14 in a brilliant array of running and passing. At half time the crowd was entertained by the SLl Band, the crack Drill Team of the AROTC commanded by Captain Leon C. Vial III and the presentation of Queen Jeanette Mc- Nabb and her court escorted by the members of the Air Honor Society. Pre-game ceremonies included the Bonfire, burning of the Demon, parade plus the fresh- man snake dance and the judging of the Home- coming floats, which was won by the Theta Xi fraternity for the second straight year. Daisy Mae and L ' Abner — Jane Harris and Cecil Griffith DSD ' SADIE s HAWKINS DANCE The annual Sadie Hawkins Day celebration was originated on the campus by Delta Sigma Delta sorority. On this specific day the DSD girls wear their hair in pig- tails, don their colors, blue and white, and sell tickets to the female students for the dance held in honor of the well-known comic strip character. They decorate the gym with familiar scenes of Dogpatch, and generally enhance backwoods atmosphere. Corsages are sold to the girls bringing dates and measurements are taken of the girls for the tiniest waist and of the boys for the largest expanded chest. Prizes are presented to the winners in each event. The highlight of the dance is the traditional race, at which time the Daisy Maes put up a hard fight to get their men. Through a committee headed by- Mark Munn, the Student Council ob- tained Tommy Dorsey and his Orches- tra for a three hour concert and dance. This year the dance was held in the fall so that another name band may be obtained in the spring. In its second year of operation, a year that was to see a cold war turn hot, the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps of Southwestern Louisiana Institute graduated its first class of commissioned officers. For the most part, this class was composed of combat veterans of World War II, weary of conflict but cognizant of the dangers of un- preparedness. As second lieutenants in the United States Air Force Reserve, most of these men planned to apply for a short (30 to 90 days) tour of active duty and then resume their normal civilian activities. In a statement prepared for inclusion in this book, General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Chief of Staff, United States Air Force, under- scored the necessity of the Air Force ROTC program: Today the safety of ovir country de- mands that we maintain strong armed forces, trained to the highest efficiency and organ- ized to permit ready expansion. Executive officer Major Horley N. Cox, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, is the able man-behind-the- scenes of the air science department. If the Air Force, as a member of the defense team, is to be prepared for any possible emergency, outstanding young men must be commissioned each year in its several components, both active and reserve. We rely upon the Air Force ROTC Program to provide a large majority of those officers. The unit at Southwestern Louisiana Institute is an important part of that program . On behalf of the USAF, I extend best wishes for continued success. any possible emergency may sound vague but not many days after Gen- eral Vandenberg penned those words he was in the Republic of Korea inspecting USAF units in combat. As Professor of Air Science and Tactics, Major Richard T. W. Rivers, USAF, directed the organization and the subsequent oper- ation of the Air Force ROTC unit at SLI. Before leaving for his new USAF assignment. Major Rivers said: Cadets encamped at Brooks Air Force Base receive last-minute briefing before taking off for a simulated bombing run. RIGHT: Major Richard T. W. Rivers, Professor of Air Science Tactics and Commander Richard A. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all persons concerned for making my two years stay here so extremely pleasant. The hiture strength of the United States Air Force is invested in its Air ROTC units. It is my sincere desire that this unit continue in its growth and strength throughout the years, thus render- ing aid to our nation in remaining strong and free against the forces of aggression. Major Rivers ' able staff consisted of: Major Harley N. Cox, Captain Stanworth Verdier, Captain Jack Robinson, Warrant Officer (jg) Earl P. Flannagan, M, ' ' Sgt. Roy J. Maggard, T Sgt. Robert W. Porter and T Sgt. Armon Jorden. The first cadet commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the USAF reserve from the SLI unit was Eugene Hernandez. Later, at the second annual president ' s day review, 18 May, 1950, the first cadet graduation exercises were held. Major General Alden R. Broussard. Although Air Force ROTC cadets spend more time in air science classrooms, they never-the-less do not neglect tim.e-honored close- order drill. Once a week the cadets are issued M-1 rifles and assemble on the drill field for a snappy session of precision drill. USAF Captain Stan worth Verdier, as commandant of cadets, directs this phase of training. Here cadets have an opportunity to develop traits of personal leadership. During the course of an academic year, the cadets are sure to be reviewed and inspected by high ranking U.S. Air Force officers. As the USAF expects to gain 90 ' r of its future officers from the ROTC program, the cadets take their drills in deadly earnest. CADET UNIT COMMANDERS AT MID-YEAR WERE: FIRST ROW: Lt. Col. I. M. SEASON The Southwestern Football Squad of 1949 climax- ed a very fruitful season by downing a stubborn Northwestern eleven to capture third place in the Gulf States Conference. Throughout the campaign the S.L.I, gridsters showed fine spirit and good coach- ing as they entered each game determined to uphold the honor of Southwestern to the best of their ability. This fighting spirit was well de monstrated in games against Southeastern, Pensacola, and Northwestern when in each occasion the offensive and defensive units combined their power to grab victory from the depths of defeat. The final count found the Bulldogs with six victories and three defeats in the won-lost column and with 174 points scored as compared to their opponents 145. Individual highscorer for the rampaging Bull- dogs was their ace right-half-back George Crowson, who broke the Gulf States Conference Scoring Rec- ord by tallying 72 points. Bubber Phillips of Missis- sippi Southern had previously held the record when he chalked up 60 markers in the 1948 season. Crow- son was greatly aided by his educated toe as he booted 21 conversions and one field goal. Jerry Hodges, left-half-back, ranked second in point pro- duction with 30, and he was followed by Dick Pate with 18 and Lou Gaudet, R. E. Billion and John Falgout with 12 apiece. Thereafter the final outcome of the encounter was never in doubt as the Bulldogs completely outclassed their out-of-state rivals both defensively and offensively. Crowson also accounted for S.L.I. After the half Pate scampered 30 yards for the Bulldogs third score and Gaudet took in another TD pass, both coming in the third quarter. In that same period Renfroe also had scored his second and last tally of the night. S.L.I. ' s final three tallies were runs of 65, 60, and 35 yards by H. T. Smith, Fisher and Crowson, respectively. Crowson booted 6 of 7 points after touchdowns adding to his scoring column another 12 points. The Awaited Kickoif Southwestern captured its first GuH States Conference victory against a stubborn South- eastern aggregation 27-20. Crowson, Hodges, and Pate paced the Bulldog offense and Gaudet, Ward and Roach starred for the Bulldog line. Southeastern scored first as fullback Lavigne plunged two yards for the TD, but Parnell failed to convert. S.L.I, then came roaring back with two quick scores as Crowson plunged across from the three, and Smith com- pleted a 14 yard pass to end Luffey. Crowson added both extra points and the Bulldogs were out in front 14-7. When the Red and White of Southwestern first engaged competition upon the floor of the new coliseum they had a conference record of 5 wins and 7 defeats, but after that they began to climb into the conference spotlight by repeated victories ov r high- ly favored opponents. Track A brilliant Southwestern track and field squad won another conference championship and established a tradition during the 1950 season. The Bulldog cindermen maintained their supremacy over other conference schools with a third straight league champion- ship and remained as the only track champion in the two-year history of the Gulf States conference. The Bulldog cindermen beat off a challenging — and favored — Loyola team by a single point to retain the crown at the annual meet in Lafayette on Saturday, May 13, 1950. SLI scored 72 points to 71 for Loyola and 65% for Southeastern. Performances by unheralded trackmen like discus thrower Donald Mosing and high jumpers Earl Raggio and Hugh Hebert enabled the Bulldogs to surpass Loyola and Southeastern. Big guns of the track squad were a trio of runners — Jack Best, Charles Parkerson and Bill Sheffield. Best, the flying red- head, recovered from a leg injury in time to pace SLI to im- portant victories in the conference meet. Parkerson, a veteran perform.er, anchored the relay teams and was the highest indi- vidual scorer on the championship squad. Sheffield, who served as co-captain of the 1950 squad along with Parkerson, won his third conference mile crown. Coach Harmon K. West, who coached this great track team of Southwestern Louisiana Institute to their third conference championship. Harold Lyons vaulted 12 feet to set a new conference pole vault record. Mosing took the discus event and Raggio and Hebert, both fresh- men, tied for first place honors in the high jump. Alfred Arceneaux repeated as conference half- mile champion, and sophomore Billy Gooch placed in both hurdles events. The Track Squad Top freshman on the 1950 squad was F. G. Mixon, who ran the 100 and 440-yard dashes and the relays. Other point-makers for the Bulldogs were Gene Millet, relays; Doyle Boudreaux, sprints; Lynn Aysenne and A. E. Gautreau, weights; Bill Brinkhaus and Dewitt Blanchard, high jumpers; John Land, broad jumper and South- western Relays recordholder in the hop, step and jump; Jim Anders, Milton Gaudet and Alfred Schoeffler, broad jumpers; Lucien Hebert, quarter- miler and relay runner; and Nat Kieffer, Gerald Dill, Sheldon D eshotels, Carl Hancock and Gar- land Webb, distance men. A brief resume of the track season shows SLI bowing to the University of Houston and downing Tech in a three-way season ' s opener; SLI trounc- ing Southeastern and Northwestern; SLI losing to Loyola by three points; and SLI topping North- western and Louisiana Tech in the warm-up meet before the conference clash. A pair of records fell to Harold Lyons (left) and John Land, star SLI field men, during the season. Lyons raised the GSC pole vault mark to 12 feet, and Land broke his own hop, step and jump record in the Southwestern Relays with a jump of 44 feet, 1 1 inches. Crowson, a two year letterman from New Iberia, led the champs with a lusty .380 average at the plate and topped the squad in runs scored and runs batted in. Along with Crowson in the outfield SLI had Guy Funk in right and Norm O ' Nan in left batting .333 and .282 respec- tively. These three gave the Bulldogs what many sportwriters and major league scouts considered The best outfield trio in college base- ball. George Luffey, junior righthander from Monroe, paced the Bulldogs pitching staff with six wins and no defeats. Southpaw Dalton, Big Train, Boyd of Clarks won five and lost four as he filled the bill as the work- horse of the mound corps. Luffey boasted a .333 earned run average while Boyd was close behind with a .332 percentage.
