. CHARACTER l l Character is that quality, which distinguishes 'a persori from his fellow man. It is the sum total of the individual-and'aIl he represents, evidenced by clean living-and clear thinking. Like an lnvlslble magnet, character guides one through life's tempta- tions: and once developed, grows steadily to be- come an unfalling guide for its master. It' is com- posed of intangibles, such, as honesty and integrity. It is a quality that makes men famous. ' Qharacter is not an innate traltp- it is a quality man must strive to perfect. He must decide the degree of perfection he shall. attain, and every ac- tion and ,decision inlhis life plays a part in develop- ment of his character. An industry, too, must constantly cultivate char- acter-in 'its name, its product, and its people. ln- dustry shows great pride in its character, and industries in this area take much interest in the character of their community, because an indus- try's character can be no better than its -com- munity's. , ,. Owens-Illinois is indeed cognizant of the char- acter of this.community, its citizens, and its youth. You who are being graduated can be lustly proud of the richness of your communlty's character, but you cannot wear such pride without responsibility, because your forthcoming contributions of, honesty. integrity and other character-building prerequisites' will shape the character of your community for the future.
