Math Department Uses Calculators Mr. Stewart, listens while helping students. Two calculators were available for the first time this year in the Mathe- matics Department. These electronic calculators helped the students solve equations in a much simpler and more useful way. Computer Math classes continued to be popualr with the computer in use almost every hour. Other Math classes ranged from Pre-Algebra to Calculus. The head of the Mathematics Department was Mr. Robert Brawn- er. Teachers were Mrs. Carol Conov- er, Mrs. Betty VandenBosch, Mr. William Duncan, Mr. Donald Stew- art, Mr. Al Tappert, Mr. Dennis Mar- goni, Mr. James Jackson, and Mr. Larry Smith. Trigonometry class takes a break to read the current HOOFBEAT. Nancy Wagner works at the calculator. Math 35 Science Becomes a World of Inquiry Maybe the chemicals stayed the same, but there were many changes in the science department this year. Two new courses were offered. They were Advanced Chemistry, taught by Mr. Thad Lau and Advanced Biol- ogy which Mrs. Carol Wright taught. These courses were based on col- lege level material giving the student an opportunity to have Beginning Biology and Chemistry waived in college. Mr. Don Collins came from Northwestern replacing Mr. Dave Zick. The rest of the department, headed by Mr. John Lynch, were Mr. Bill Beauvais, Mrs. JoAnn Davis, Mr. Monty Karnes, Mr. Carl Terwilliger and Mr. Lowell Ricky. Terwilliger has a better idea. Science Brad Knight and Debbie Martin take out time for a laugh from their Advanced Chemistry experiment. Biology students use filmstrip projectors and models to learn about the eye. Science 3 Students discuss a topic in Mythology in Literature. Mrs. Anderson shows students old Shakespearean stage. Paperbacks interest Theresa Caleca, Cindy Foutch. Ms. Ehrlich receives overload of work. 18 English Mr. Keim has a few laughs with students. English classes study Black Culture. There Is Always a Busy Moment Pam Griggs and Veronica Franklin use the tape recorder in their English Lab class. in English Writing, drama, literature, and journalism were all part of the Eng- lish curriculum. The first semester all sophomores were required to take one of the three: Successful Writing, Practical English, or Effective English. From then on choices were made by the students. Mid-term a change was made with Mrs. Karen Conover replacing Mr. Pat Morris as department head. In- structors were Mrs. Elizabeth Calk- ins, Mrs. Maria Anderson, Mr. Douglas Hamilton, Mrs. Laura De- Blaise, Ms. Mary Ehrlich, Ms. Patricia Harris, Mr. Harold Keim, and Mrs. jean Wesley. Mrs. Meissner explains a story to her French class. 40 Foreign Language Activities Enhance Languages Mrs. Helene Foster listens as Spanish students present orals. โ–  โ€”โ€”- French IV students dream of Paris life. Students who take a foreign lan- guage really get involved. They learn and increase their vo- cabulary by making up skits, plays, stories, and playing games, such as cards and bingo. Extracurricular events included the German classes dinner at Fran- kenmuth and the Spanish and French students' celebration of the holidays. In the Spring foreign language classes gave much time and effort to preparing a foreign dinner. Every- one dressed in costume and pre- pared a different dish to represent the country whose language they studied. Mr. Lajewski assists a German student. Foreign Language 41 John Brown and Rick George take notes for coming test. Psychology requires serious thinking. Human Relations, New Choice in Social Studies To better understand their hang- ups and deficiencies, students had the opportunity to select a new course in Social Studies, Human Rel- ations. As students learned to know themselves, they became aware of the similarities that exist among all people. Psychology, Sociology, and Economics contributed their share. By studying wars, depressions, the West, along with the fundamentals of government and American Histo- ry, understanding was further en- hanced. Vital Current Issues consid- ered the all important now. Instructors were Mr. Alex Crane, Mr. Garth Frost, Mr. Robert Knight, Mr. Marv Rettenmund, Mr. Dale Schober, and Mr. Paris Wilson. The department Chairman was Vincent Abrams. Mr. Abrams tries to put some spirit in the nation's coming birthday. 4 42 Social Studies Students listen intently to history lecture. A famous former President Nixon pose by Darryl Holt. Mr. Fischer uses overhead projector for student note taking. 43 Social Studies Home Economics Stresses Cutting Costs Influenced by the economic re- cession, Home Economics classes stressed how to cut costs. Recycling clothes was encouraged in the clothing classes. By using scraps of leftover materials, patch- work pillows were made. From worn out jeans, purses and hats were fash- ioned. Re-styling and up-dating old clothes was taught. Other classes were Home Arts, Food Management, and Boy's Foods. The later attesting that Home Economics is not soley for girls. Boys learned to make quick breads, yeast breads, meats, salads, and desserts. Nutrition was emphasized along with how to manage on a limited food budget. Elmer Nieman, Delbert Mitchell, Donald Dickerson, Ray Fichtenberg learn to cook. 44 Home Economics Gym Promotes Mind, Body Fitness Proper physical, emotional, and spiritual growth of Southwestern's students is the aim of Physical Educa- tion classes. Soccer, volleyball, bas- ketball, and tennis are just a few of the games to which gym instructors devote their time. Tumbling, swim- ming, and exercises help develop poise and grace. Good sportsman- ship and team spirit are also goals of the physical fitness program. Classes are held inside during the winter months, but the warm days of early fall and late spring find the stu- dents outside where fresh air and sunshine seem to evoke even more enthusiasm and energy for sports. Teaching these classes were Mr. Gordon Spencer, department chair- man, Mrs. Sue Jakovich, Mr. Gene Summers, and Mrs. Rose Thomas, new this year. 46 Physical Education Boys demonstrate alertness and agility in volleyball. Students receive instruction from Mrs. Jackovich. Joanne McGuirk prepares to dive. Diana Reaves is ready for a fast return. Physical Education 47 Skills Taught for Survival Personal Security Education and Driver Education were two courses required for graduation. Students were taught the correct way to drive by instructors, Mr. Keith Richardson, Mr. Arthur Squire, and Mr. Robert Chambers. In PSE Mr. Fred Jackson and Mr. Tom Elias covered emer- gency health care, drugs, civil de- fense, and first aid. Students do a variety of things in Mr. Fred Jackson's PSE class. A familiar sight on the driving range 48 PSE Driver Education Special Ed Offers 14th Year of Service Individualized instruction keeps Kenneth McDonald and Terry Sleeper busy. Special education classes helped students who had certain learning difficulties and problems. Through the use of films, visual aides, and listening stations in such areas as English, mathematics, and social studies; students were en- couraged to reach their potential. Mrs. Helen Murdock and Miss Ida Phillips, special-ed instructors; and Mr. Russell Ward, special-ed coun- selor, were in charge of the program. Howard Yale gets help on his income tax form from Mrs. Murdock. Cheryl Perry concentrates on math. Special Education 49 Business Department Is Career Oriented The Cooperative Training Pro- gram in the Business Department not only removed the student from the usual five class day and intro- duced him to the world of business, but prepared him for life as an adult. Advantages included the estab- lishment of good employment hab- its and attitudes, and a basic under- standing of job responsibilities. Other classes offered were typing, shorthand, and office practice. Elec- tronic calculators and IBM transcrib- ing equipment were available to the students to ready them for the mod- ern office. Coordinators of the Co-op pro- gram were Mr. Donald VanOrden, marketing instructor and Mrs. Carl Weathers in office and clerical train- ing. Other teachers in the Business Department were Mrs. Audrey Mor- ris. Mrs. Virginia Bland, Mrs. Melvia Sims and Mr. David Kakkuri. Carol Gregory and Rhonda Gunnels practice shorthand. Jerome Feldman, on Co-op, talks to a customer. Tammy Trantham corrects ditto sheet in office practice. 50 Business Co-op Sue Cornwell and Sharon Cotner take orders as a part of their job at Burger King. Karen Eves and Carol Arnold believe shorthand can be amusing. Adding figures keeps Kathy MacDonald occupied. Business Co-op 51 Industrial Ed Stresses Vocational Skills New this year to the Industrial Education Department was the Small Engines class. Students were taught the inner workings of small gasoline engines such as lawnmowers, snow- mobiles, and motorcycles. The in- structor, Mr. Anthony Gamble, was new to the department. Shared time courses were offered again this year. Other classes were, Architectural Drawing, Auto Mechanics, Industrial Materials and Production I, Graphic Arts, and Machine Shop. Mr. Bruce Wierman was head of the Industrial Education Depart- ment. Other teachers were Mr. Thomas Hookey, Mr. Roger Phelps, and Mr. Gerald Smith. Mr. Wierman and Bill Boring select type from a type box. Mike Munroe grins as HOOFBEAT is finally printed. Working on car engines is a part of Auto Mechanics. 52 Industrial Education Ralph Wright watches as John Britt checks over a tire. Industrial Education 53 Making calendars is one of the many projects in Printing. Classes Are Added in Art To enable students to concentrate on one subject area, four new one semester art courses were added. These were Pottery and Ceramics, Painting, Water Color, and Printing. Arts and Crafts I and II and Art I were other classes that were offered. Special assignments such as de- signing and producing signs, putting up displays in showcases, designing Montage sets, and designing mar- quees kept art students busy. New equipment included two electric pottery wheels and an elec- tric kiln. Mr. Arthur Koskinen was chair- man of the Fine Arts Department. A staff addition was Mr. Gerald Smith teaching classes in Arts and Crafts along with Miss Rose Hunter. Painting requires deep concentration by Paul Nelson. 54 Art Art students paint signs to boost school spirit. James Stockard shows skilled footwork in Pottery and Ceramics. Putting finishing touches on his painting is Dana Harris. Art 55 Duane Bigger checks over a film projector. We cannot bear not to read.' Library Stresses Multiple Use Southwesternโ€™s Media Center, more commonly known as the Li- brary, serves many purposes. Besides having over 14 thousand books, it also has magazines, phamphlets, and newspapers, some of which are on microfilm. Movie projectors, tape recorders, and record players are a few items available from the Center for teachers. Also for the second year a copy machine was available to students and faculty who could copy any material for a dime. Crocheted bears made by library secretary Mrs. Dorothy Fitzner helped stress the importance of reading. Librarians were Miss Patri- cia Brain and Mrs. Virginia Shep- pard. Library Aide Jack Shewbuirt checks out books for students. 56 Library While reading a story to first graders, Tim Allen shows pictures. A once obsolete sight is again familiar at registration. Cadet Teachers Are Few But Still Exist Though the number of individuals involved in this year's Cadet Teach- ing Program dropped slightly from last year, a number of students still found fulfillment in helping to educate. Cadets assisted teachers from 2 p.m. through 3:30 p.m. after com- pleting the school day at Southwest- ern. Responsibilities included out- side reading assignments, prepara- tion of logs of special materials and information, and interviews with in- structors involved in the same teach- ing areas as the Cadets. Eisenhower, Coolidge, and Freeman elementary schools participated in the program. Mrs. Helene Foster, sponsor of the Cadet Teaching Program, met bi-weekly with class members. Cadet Teaching 57 Lynn Friesen helps first graders with colors and figures. Skill Center Provides on-the-job Training Although the number of South- western students enrolled at the Genesee Area Skill Center dropped slightly from last year, over 100 indi- viduals still took advantage of the wide variety of courses. Included in the Center's list of occupational courses and studies offered to area students were auto mechanics, data processing, com- mercial trucking, photography, art, machine occupations, floriculture, and aviation airframe. The Skill Center program for Southwestern students was coordi- nated by Mrs. Yvonne Cox, newly appointed assistant principal for counseling. How to take blood pressure is demonstrated by Cindy Smith. Care is exercised by William Orr in Radio and Television. Larry Larocque wears protective gear for Welding. Mike Pepplar shows that paper work is not all bad. Mary Lou Riley prepares student for studio Skill Center 59 Band Director, Mr. Barry Wentz. The drum section maintains a rhythmic beat as they march to their seats. Assistant Drum Major Dave Sorscher takes a break. 60 Marching Band Smart stepping Colts compete in Mid- Michigan Invitational Marching Band Tournament. Style of Marching Colts Changes The 1974-75 Marching Colts changed their style of marching. In- stead of the traditional upstep and accent on four and eight, a roll step with accent was adopted. This new style is used by drum and bugle corps throughout the United States. Also new to the Marching Colts was the Color Guard. The members of this group carried flags and did routines in time with the music. Lieutenant Laura MacPhail led this portion of the band. The Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Barry Wentz, was led by Senior Drum Major Michael Robinson and Assistant Drum Major David Sorscher. Senior Drum Major Mike Robinson directs the band. Marching Band 61 Students Learn Basics of Instruments Two new classes were added to the Instrumental Music Department. Piano and Beginning Winds. Each emphasized teaching students the basics of their chosen instrument. Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, and Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Barry Wentz, performed in concerts and festivals. Guest conductor at the Winter Concert, which featured the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band, was Dr. Raymond Roth of the University ot Michigan-Flint. He formerly taught here from 1960 to 1970. Jazz Ensemble, an award winning group, performed at state festivals, area schools, concerts, and at several schools in Detroit and Ann Arbor. String Study I and String Study II were taught by Dr. Lloyd Miller who also assisted in directing Symphony Band. Guitar students studied ac- cording to their level of ability. Instrumental Music 63 Southwestern's award winning Jazz Ensemble entertains a record crowd. Performing Is Part of Instrumental Music The Wind Ensemble brass section performs with flare in Russian Christmas Music. Mr. C.L. Bergman leads Southwestern's orchestra and vocal music students in the Christmas concert. Orchestra keeps Lu Prevo on the edge of her seat 66 Orchestra Barb Main exhibits her skill with the viola. First cellist, Linda Truesdell, concentrates. Concerts Highlighted Orchestra's Year Violinists of all abilities work together to achieve perfection. Under the direction of Dr. Lloyd Miller, Southwestern's orchestra had a fine year. Performances varied from the Fall Concert, which fea- tured Judy Parks and Alesia Byrd as soloists in Bach's Double Concerto in D Minor, to the traditional pre- festival concert. Each day, fourth hour, 22 string players met in the auditorium for rehearsals. A select group of Wind Ensemble members joined the strings to form the full orchestra which performed in concerts. Vocal Groups Keep Busy Performing This year Southwestern's Vocal Music Department boasted four se- lect performing groups and a mixed chorus. Mr. C.L. Bergman was the director of all vocal music groups. The performing groups were Mis- ty Blue, a top level young women's group. Blue Sodality, the men's group meeting before school. Cho- ral Ensemble, a select mixed group, and Choir, a group with 45-50 stu- dents. These groups entertained at school concerts, elementary schools, churches, and other organizations. For evaluation the groups also took part in District and State festivals. Their repertoire varied from classical to jazz, to spiritual, and to pop. Coach Fred Jackson's Thinclads ended the season with several high finishes under their belts, a fourth place in City and second in Valley with a superb twelfth in the State. John Bradburn finished among the top 10 in the State meet. Brad Knight was second in the Valley pole vault. With a time of 4:26.3 Rick Nash broke the school record for the mile. A 6'7 high jump by Willie Turner broke that record. All three relays were won in the Valley meet. Working smoothly together, the 440 relay team placed second in the State. The squad was com- posed of Don Moore, Beeman Veasley, Dexter Shankle, and Car- lisle Richardson. Veasley was named Most Valuable Player. Wil- lie Turner was named Most Improved. Finishing the season with second place in the City Meet, the Colt weightlifters showed excellent indi- vidual performances. The only first place was taken by Kimbrell Ed- wards. Gene Johnson, Kevin Battle, and Earl Pollard finished in second place. Dale Taeckens, Stan Avery, and Rick Leach finished third. Also showing their strength during the season were Doug White and Chuck Harbin. Weightlifting is an integral part of the athletic program because it gives athletes a chance to further develop and improve themselves physically, Coach Christiansen said. Girls Finish Second in City Coach Dar Christiansen summed up the first year of girls' track at SW as, Successful, but more girls are needed. Led by Kathy Vincent, who placed sixth in the state in the long jump, the Colts placed 22nd in the state and second in the city. The medley relay team of Laverne Mathews, Kim Davis, Daphne Hor- ton, and Sabina Dawson placed fourth in the Regionals. Girls Track 81 Netters Clinch Regional Title The Colt tennis team did it once more they brought home another Regional trophy after tying for first place in the Valley East with Midland. Most Valuable Player Jeff Coggins showed the netters his form and took first place in the Regional sin- gles. He won 10 straight matches as did Eric Sorscher. Both were City champions. Max Engleman and Jeff Johnson also demonstrated good form for Coach Dennis Margoni. Eric Olson and Dave Sorscher proved that effort pays as they both earned letters as sophomores. The season ended with a 19-7 rec- ord. Both the City championship and Valley East were won by the Colts. Most Valuable Player Ricky Leach became the mainstay of the eight man pitching staff. Contributing to much of the Colt's success, third baseman Mark Zbiciak led the squad with a .400 batting average. Second baseman Doug Allyn, first baseman Gene Johnson, shortstop Randy Ryckman, and catchers Doug White and Bill Green completed one of the best infields that SW has seen in re- cent years. Leach Wins MVP Award Finishing the season with an 8-1 record, the Varsity gridders captured the City and Valley titles. Led by se- nior quarterback Rick Leach, the Colts beat all opponents except an opening game loss to Powers. Leach broke all City passing rec- ords and threw his fiftieth career TD pass. MVP in the Valley East, he was also the team's MVP. He had help in his record breaking season from ends Chuck Fiebernitz, Dennis Johnson, Gene Johnson, Norman Moore, and Lawrence Younger. Leach and Gene Johnson were All- State selections. Mike Taylor and Chuck Harbin were honorable. The Colts showed some real poise through the year, pulling out some exciting games. Included was a 14-7 win over Bay City Central, which the Colts won with 39 seconds to play. After dropping their first three games of the season, Bob Lintjer's Junior Varsity Colts won their last six to finish with the best record posted by a JV football team in the last thir- teen years at Southwestern. The team's 4-1 conference mark and 6-3 overall record earned them a tie for first place in the Saginaw Valley's East Division. Throughout the season the little Colts capitalized on the fine play of Most Valuable Players Don Nard (defense) and Rodney Feaster (of- fense). A much improved Colt de- fense, led by quarterback Jim Buter- akos, scored a total of 90 points in its final three games, and averaged 25 points a game for the season. The gridders played consistently well on defense also, allowing an average of less than 18 points a game, and hold- ing their opponents to 10 points or less on three occasions. The Colts did a fine job in the City and Valley meets, taking third in both. Coming in eighteenth, Rick Nash was South- western's only runner in the State. Coach Cordon Spencer said, Nash is one of the best long distance run- ners Southwestern has ever had as his record clearly states. Varsity awards were given to Rick Nash, Tom Johnson, Dave Puckett, Joel Streich, Frank, McNea, and Mike Puckett. Cross Country 99 Linksmen Complete Best Season in 3 Years With a 13-3-1 record, the Varsity linksmen completed the season with the best record in three years. Led by Max Engleman with a 77 and Scott Hurley with an 81, the Swinging Colts took first in the City and sec- ond in the Valley, losing to Midland by a stroke. Sophomore Basketball 103 Cagers Capture City, Valley East Led by All-Valley East guard Rick Leach, the Varsity Cagers had their best season establishing an 18-4 rec- ord along with Valley East and City titles. The season started out with a bang as the cagers won their first 11 games, and were rated as high as third in the State. Besides his All-Valley first team selection, Rick was also chosen Most Valuable player in the East. Other selections to the Valley teams were Quintin Marshall and Gene Johnson who were named to the second team, and Guy Emery who was awarded Honorable Mention. The leading scorer was Leach who averaged 16 points a game, second best in the city. The leading reboun- der for the season was Johnson. Varsity Basketball 107 JV's Improve Last Year's Record This year's JV team with the record of 15-5 showed much improvement over last year's record of 12-8. With the high scoring of Todd Bradley and Rodney Feaster, the Colts took the Valley Championship and a share of the City Title. The top three rebounders were John Taylor, Rod- ney Feaster, and Melvin Smith, the latter two were later moved to the Varsity team. Feaster led the team with a 47 per cent shooting average, followed by Todd Bradley, 46 per cent; and Terry Oates, 42 per cent. Other outstanding players were Booker Moore and Scott Hurley. Lane Named Most Outstanding Player The girls basketball team, coached by Mrs. Sue Jackovich and Mrs. Sue Meissner, finished a disappointing season with a 2-9 record. Consider- ing the support they received, the team had a fine season despite their losses. Individual Varsity Wrestlers Rank High Southwestern finished the Dual Meet season with a 6-2 record. They finished third in the City with Jeff Lee, Bruce Weissend, Darwin Campbell, Rick George, and Chuck Harbin taking first places. The Wrestling Colts also took second place in the Valley Meet held at Southwestern. The champions were Kevin Battle, Rick George, Darwin Campbell, Reggie Boone and Chuck Harbin. At the Regional Meet held at Northwestern with only four wrestlers, the Colts placed elev- enth out of twenty-two schools. Managers and Trainers 121 122 Senior Council Sponsors Money Making Projects Despite the resignation of two key Council members, the 1974-75 Se- nior Class Council did a fine job of representing the student body, sponsoring such activities as the spring fashion show, the senior prom, and graduation. The seniors staged button sales, bake sales, and weekly doughnut sales, to raise money for their activi- ties. The Council also sold football jerseys and designed their own Se- nior '75 buttons. areas public and parochial schools. Members of JA met weekly at cen- ters in Flint, Fenton, or Owosso. Af- ter the first meeting, members or- ganized themselves into corpora- tions, selected a corporate name, picked a product to make and sell, established a wage scale for them- selves, elected officers, and sold shares of JA stock. The primary purpose of the JA Program was to educate young peo- ple so they will have a better under- standing of free enterprise and its operations. Robert Wilson and Deforest Johnson demonstrate making bulletin boards. 194 Junior Achievement Southwestern Students Enjoy Basketball Intramurals again took the interest of those students who desired to compete against each other. This year there were ten intramural bas- ketball teams which held games on Saturday mornings between 8:30 and 11:30 A.M. Following the league season, tour- naments were held with the champi- ons receiving individual trophies for their efforts. The intramural program was spon- sored by Mr. John Clothier with as- sistance from Mr. James Jackson. When the ball goes up it must come down. Ceorge Banks shoots for two points. Intramurals 195 Pom Pom Squad Performs During Halftime The Southwestern Pom Pom Squad consisted of fifteen girls who entertained spectators during the half-time period of basketball games held at SW. The squad did not travel to away games. Members were guided by Co- captains Pat Goode and Beverly Johnson. Sponsors of the Pom Pom Squad were Mrs. Helen Murdock and Mrs. Ida Phillips. Myrtle Bonner shows spirit during a performance. The Squad also performs a drill without the use of pom poms. Pom poms make the halftime show even more enjoyable. 196 Pom Pom Squad Young Life Unites,Develops Understanding Young Life, introduced to Flint in 1969, centered upon the indi- vidual's personal relationship with God and included members from every religious denomination. Goals of Young Life were di- rected to the idea of how to live and learn of God in such a way that young adults could understand. Members met weekly in stu- dent's homes and engaged in ac- tivities such as singing, acting out skits, and taking part in short talks relating to Christianity. Weekend activities included field trips to places such as Pine Hills, Crystal Mountain, and Sarnia, Ontario in Basketball team rates third out of seven teams. Canada. Young Life 197 Police Cadets Promote Good Citizenship Teaching good citizenship, com- munity responsibility, and delin- quency prevention were the main goals of the Southwestern Police Cadets. In order for high school students to teach fourth, fifth, and sixth grad- ers from various elementary schools, weekly training is received every Friday. Lereacos Flowers points out that discipline is a major part of Police Cadets. 198 Police Cadets Health Careers Offer Services in Area Hospitals Health Careers main project this year was to volunteer in the four area hospitals. In addition to their hospital duties they sang Christmas carols at convalescent homes, and also helped in a blood drive. The club held meetings every three weeks with nurses as special speak- ers. Montage, a combination of art, vocal music, instrumental music, drama, and dance, organized to rep- resent the central theme; was writ- ten and performed during the month of May and was put together from over twenty-five scripts con- tributed by various persons. Mr. Arthur Koskinen, Mr. Barry Wentz, Dr. Lloyd Miller, and Mr. C.L. Bergman were teacher advisors of Montage. Eric Sorscher, student director, was assisted by Michelle Manglesdorf. DECA membership provided the opportunity for students to belong to the only state and national youth organization devoted entirely to career developments in the field of retailing and marketing. Individual leadership and career goals were accomplished by con- ducting business meetings, field trips, community oriented projects, and competitive projects in the Annual DECA State Career Develop- ment Conference. The Chess Club also participated in the Annual Powers Chess Open and competed against other Flint area schools. This year three new chess clocks were purchased to facil- itate playing the game. Concentration is the name of the game. lacob Farah receives an award from Mr. Lau. Chess Club 205 Active BCM Promotes Black Awareness Action was the theme for the '74- '75 Black Culture Movement. In this way the students felt they could promote black awareness in the school and community. Through ac- tivities, BCM tried to express what they had learned of their past and clarify their hopes for the future. Activities included dances, con- ferences, the Harlem Prom, pro- grams which featured important blacks of the city of Flint, and a Gangster Dance. Mardi Gras, known by the French as Fat Tuesday, was celebrated by the four language classes and invited guests. At this event students got together to sing songs, dance, and act out skits pertaining to the various countries. Each group also provided a bountiful table of food native to the country represented. This question was asked several times throughout the year. Matmaids served as cheer- leaders for wrestling, painted signs and made announcements to publi- cize games and players, and always brought lots of spirit and support to the wrestling meets. The matmaids with the aid of their adviser, Mrs. Millie Everett, made extra money by selling candy bars, holding bake sales at the Dort Mall, and selling Colt Country stickers. Student Service Center 211 Student Council Promotes Spirit President, Eric Sorscher Corresponding Secretary, Laura Seijas Student Council this year counted on the students for ideas and suggestions. In the past, Student Government was considered useless in getting things done. This year's goal was to involve all school mem- bers in order to have a truly repre- sentative school government. Suggestion boxes were located throughout the school and students were given opportunity to come to the Council Room 8 to voice their opinions. Activities of Council included organizing bus trips for out-of-town football games, the sale of football jerseys, and operation of the popu- lar candy store.
