The driver education facilities at Southwestern include a driver training course and a tower from which the instructor gives personalized instructions to the individual student. Security Education Provides Basic Training The security education program at South- western consists of driver education, health, and civil defense. These classes are organized and arranged in such a way that they may all be taken in one semester. They are required classes and must be taken before a student can graduate. Some students because of their program of study may have to wait until their junior year to take these courses. Driver education is a two hour program alter- nating class work and actual driving on the range. This enables the student to put into practice the skills that he has learned in class. Health is a basic course in everyday health and problems that a student may encounter in health in everyday life. Civil Defense is a very beneficial class. It gives basic instructions in civil defense and also in first aid. The class material is more firmly implanted by projects illustrating the uses of first aid and stressing the importance of civil defense. 26
