Business Offers Practical Experience Pounding typewriters, scratching pens, and turning pages, are some of the sounds one hears as he passes the business education classes. The business courses offered at Southwestern are shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, office practice, office co-op. retail sales, sales co-op, business law', notehand, and business math. Each class has been designed with the students' business welfare in mind. These classes provide the practical and useful information that an individual planning a future in business needs before graduation. The co-op program differs from regular class- room work in that it is offered only to seniors. In this program students work in part-time jobs during the afternoon, and at the same time re- ceive school credit, experience, and weekly wages. Miss Lela Withers files information on one of the business education classes as Mr. Eugene Grice. Mr. Edwin Laube, and Mrs. Madeline Duludc look on. 22

Languages Develop Better Understanding In the lab, students studying foreign languages listen to tapes concerning the language that they arc studying. Spanish, French, German, and Latin are the languages offered at Southwestern. Latin is con- sidered a good basis for branching into modern languages and English. The teachers of the mod- ern languages hope to increase the comprehen- sion of grammatical ideas and the fluency of tongue and to create better understanding of the traditions and cultures of the foreign countries. The language laboratory has been newly fur- nished this year with new equipment and is of great assistance to all students studying foreign languages. Tapes of native speakers help to train ears to the pronunciations and accents of the various languages. 21
