Mr. Pat Morris. Mrs. Sue Sevitts. and Mr. Wesley Smith talk about department objectives with P.C.P. counselor. Mr. Howard Hughes (second from right). P.C.P. Students Gain Work Experience P.C.P., the Personalized Curriculum Pro- gram, was organized in 1962 to encourage stu- dents to remain in school and graduate. This is done primarily by three means: small classes, personal attention, and work experience. Approximately 5% of the student body, 120 students, are enrolled in the P.C.P. program. Classes which include English, math, and social studies are in a 15 to I, student-teacher ratio. This makes it possible for the teachers to know the students better and give them more individual attention. Students spend four hours in class and four hours working at local business places. They earn wages and gain working experience. If a student is doing satisfactorily in this class and on this curriculum he may switch to some other program. Mr. Edward Brown, Mr. Ben Martin, and Mr. Roy Tapper! look over magazines used in P.C.P. courses. Miss Martha Todd. Mrs. Helen Murdock, and Mr. Garth Frost complete the list of P.C.P. teachers.

A new type of history course is being tried. Three classes have joined to make a lecture class. Every other day the students meet to receive a lecture. On the other days they discuss the material. Mrs. Jane Chambers. Mr. Scott McCollom. Mr. Joseph Sims. Mr. Robert Ellis, and Mrs. Helene Foster get together for a language conference. Languages Develop Better Understanding In the lab, students studying foreign languages listen to tapes concerning the language that they arc studying. Spanish, French, German, and Latin are the languages offered at Southwestern. Latin is con- sidered a good basis for branching into modern languages and English. The teachers of the mod- ern languages hope to increase the comprehen- sion of grammatical ideas and the fluency of tongue and to create better understanding of the traditions and cultures of the foreign countries. The language laboratory has been newly fur- nished this year with new equipment and is of great assistance to all students studying foreign languages. Tapes of native speakers help to train ears to the pronunciations and accents of the various languages. 21
