Sped rum 1965 Southwestern Community High School Flint. Michigan Volume VI A School In Motion Motion is the pulse of all vital and dynamic existence. It is a part of all activity belonging to man. It is an integral and inescapable part of Southwestern. It is reflected in every second of every minute of every hour of every day, in every action and every thought. There is the motion of people as they move from place to place, as they surge and blend Underclassmen, Seniors, individuals, groups, masses. There is the motion of their cars jamming the parking lot to full capacity. There is the motion of Academics, as the mind moves to adapt itself—from subject to sub- ject, concept to concept, from abstract to con- crete, from basics to philosophy. There is the motion of Athletics—the grace and power of the body running, jumping, swim- ming, tackling, grappling. There is the motion of a bat, a football, a basketball, a golf club. There is the movement of sound and excitement at a game or meet. There is the motion of school Activities— the swirl of the dance or prom, the bustle of clubs, the actions of plays, the excited motion of Colt Roundup. Finally there is the wild and exciting move- ment of spirit beating and quickening as the strides of the colt on this cover. And with this colt, we leave the future of Southwestern, so that with the impetus of six years, future students may speed this colt on to his supreme pace—a relent- less, constantly enduring, driving spirit colt. TABLE OF Academics Underclassmen Seniors Alma Mater CONTENTS Athletics Activities All hail to Flint Southwestern To thee we sing our praise Our hearts are ever faithful. Thy glorious name we raise We'll always show our loyalty. It always shall be our right. We'll always be defenders Of the mighty blue and white. Mrs. Mary Scott, Mrs. Mary Sandell and Mr. Roy McMurray study one of the new textbooks. Mike Montague attempts to do an algebra problem as Mr. Kohlhepp explains. 15 Mr. Gordon Spencer. Mr. Richard Syring. Mr. Harry Hammond, and Mr. Orville Greanya await the outcome of a chemistry experiment. Science Emphasizes Lab Work In recent years the trend has been toward making the science classes, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physiology. Electronics, and Conserva- tion. consist of more laboratory work and less textbook work. Southwestern is following this trend. The science department sponsors an Elec- tronics Club and a Garden Club. It also en- courages students to take part in the Science Fair, which occurs each year in April. Biology, a study of molecular and organic materials, helps students to understand the de- velopment of nature. Chemistry is the study of inorganic substances and how they affect us. Physics, the fundamental science of the natural world, is a study of the universe, waves, and elec- tricity. Modern science combines many of the sciences and the electronics course combines craftsmanship and theory. 16 SueCurnow, Barb Baese. Eletha Oliver, and Bob Courtemanche. perform an experiment in biology. Mr. Merril Champion, Mr. Lowell Ricky, Mr. Ed Brown. Mr. David Hall, and Mr. Dick Hoag observe a physics experiment. 17 Mr. Garth Frost, Mr. Jack VanderVen, and Mr. Jesse Moore discuss classroom antics of history students. U. S. History teachers Mr. Alton Smith, Mr. Ken Clemens, Mr. Terry Carpenter, and Mr. William Fischer listen as Social Studies Department chairman, Mr. Vincent Abrams discusses new teaching methods. 18 Gail Schulze and Mr. Keith Richardson show corres- ponding points of interest on the globe and map. Mr. Alex Crane adjusts the set for his TV history classes. Exploring The Realm Of The Past And Present Southwestern offers U. S. History, Foreign Relations, and Western Civilization which is correlated with Senior English. U. S. History can be completed during the junior or senior year but it is a requirement for graduation. Foreign Rela- tions. a study of contempory history, focuses on the world situation and the United States part in it. This course is offered for all three years. A new type of history course is being tried. Three classes have joined to make a lecture class. Every other day the students meet to receive a lecture. On the other days they discuss the material. Mr. Ken Clemens relates historical information to combined history classes. Mr. Pat Morris. Mrs. Sue Sevitts. and Mr. Wesley Smith talk about department objectives with P.C.P. counselor. Mr. Howard Hughes (second from right). P.C.P. Students Gain Work Experience P.C.P., the Personalized Curriculum Pro- gram, was organized in 1962 to encourage stu- dents to remain in school and graduate. This is done primarily by three means: small classes, personal attention, and work experience. Approximately 5% of the student body, 120 students, are enrolled in the P.C.P. program. Classes which include English, math, and social studies are in a 15 to I, student-teacher ratio. This makes it possible for the teachers to know the students better and give them more individual attention. Students spend four hours in class and four hours working at local business places. They earn wages and gain working experience. If a student is doing satisfactorily in this class and on this curriculum he may switch to some other program. Mr. Edward Brown, Mr. Ben Martin, and Mr. Roy Tapper! look over magazines used in P.C.P. courses. Miss Martha Todd. Mrs. Helen Murdock, and Mr. Garth Frost complete the list of P.C.P. teachers. Mrs. Jane Chambers. Mr. Scott McCollom. Mr. Joseph Sims. Mr. Robert Ellis, and Mrs. Helene Foster get together for a language conference. Languages Develop Better Understanding In the lab, students studying foreign languages listen to tapes concerning the language that they arc studying. Spanish, French, German, and Latin are the languages offered at Southwestern. Latin is con- sidered a good basis for branching into modern languages and English. The teachers of the mod- ern languages hope to increase the comprehen- sion of grammatical ideas and the fluency of tongue and to create better understanding of the traditions and cultures of the foreign countries. The language laboratory has been newly fur- nished this year with new equipment and is of great assistance to all students studying foreign languages. Tapes of native speakers help to train ears to the pronunciations and accents of the various languages. 21 Business Offers Practical Experience Pounding typewriters, scratching pens, and turning pages, are some of the sounds one hears as he passes the business education classes. The business courses offered at Southwestern are shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, office practice, office co-op. retail sales, sales co-op, business law', notehand, and business math. Each class has been designed with the students' business welfare in mind. These classes provide the practical and useful information that an individual planning a future in business needs before graduation. The co-op program differs from regular class- room work in that it is offered only to seniors. In this program students work in part-time jobs during the afternoon, and at the same time re- ceive school credit, experience, and weekly wages. Miss Lela Withers files information on one of the business education classes as Mr. Eugene Grice. Mr. Edwin Laube, and Mrs. Madeline Duludc look on. 22 Hands with precision in one of the typical typing classes. Mrs. Rcva Goodspccd and Mr. Robert McNamara of the Business Education Department discuss the latest retail sales reports. Mr. Clair Ecklund, Mrs. Elaine Little and Mr. Gary Jacobs review the Business program. 23 Miss Dorothy Breda and Mrs. Sharon Gray bring out volleyballs for their gym class. Special Interests Through participation in physical activities, adapted to his abilities, each student increases his skill in the following areas: control of body move- ment. balance, strength, endurance, speed, flexi- bility, agility, and reaction time. These factors are essential to a neat appearance and a well co- ordinated body that moves smoothly. Each ac- tivity offered has specific value in assisting every student to achieve his maximum in health, physi- cal efficiency, and personal safety. Each student will gain in direct proportion to the amount of interest, effort, and energy he puts forth. Modern vocational classes such as auto shop, machine shop, woodworking, architectural draw- ing, drafting, and printing are offered to students at Southwestern. Students are trained not only for a future job but for practical use in the home as well. The homemaking classes are also proud to turn out many potential home economists and future homemakers of America. Mr. George LeBrasseur, Mr. Frank Mazza, and Mr. Tom Jobson read the game rules for girls' soccer. Mr. Jobson is the Varsity football coach. Miss Roberta Bautal. student teacher Miss Janet Clark, and Mrs. Helen Carpenter examine recipes in a new cookbook. Mr. Bob Diment. Mr. Kermit Baker. Mr. Joe Blaize. Mr. Garfield Newberry. Mr. Homer Randall, Mr. Richard Salmi, and Mr. Bruce Wierman, discuss the accomplishments of industrial arts. The driver education facilities at Southwestern include a driver training course and a tower from which the instructor gives personalized instructions to the individual student. Security Education Provides Basic Training The security education program at South- western consists of driver education, health, and civil defense. These classes are organized and arranged in such a way that they may all be taken in one semester. They are required classes and must be taken before a student can graduate. Some students because of their program of study may have to wait until their junior year to take these courses. Driver education is a two hour program alter- nating class work and actual driving on the range. This enables the student to put into practice the skills that he has learned in class. Health is a basic course in everyday health and problems that a student may encounter in health in everyday life. Civil Defense is a very beneficial class. It gives basic instructions in civil defense and also in first aid. The class material is more firmly implanted by projects illustrating the uses of first aid and stressing the importance of civil defense. 26 Mr. Genyk shows his students a booklet on cancer. Mr. Tom Potter, civil defense instructor, and Mr. George Genyk. health instructor, go over material for their secu- rity education classes. Mr. Stuart Willett and Mr. Dick Evans, driver education instructors, point out that there is a price to be paid for careless driving. 27 Mr. Raymond Roth and Mr. David Holmes pause after a hectic day. The Notes Of This Class Go “Do Re Mi” Miss Vivian Crope practices for one of the choir's concerts. Relaxing music and a friendly atmosphere are both part of the Pops Concert, one of the many programs performed by the instrumental depart- ment. The Marching Band lends support to the players and spirit to the spectators. As soon as football season is over, the Marching Band changes its uniform for that of the Concert Band. Each year A Cappella Choir, Girls' Glee Club, and Mixed Chorus display their talents in creative presentations. In previous years Broadway shows and operas have been performed for students as well as the public. Our singers have shown great talent at many public functions. Southwestern is known for its elaborate productions. Talented Artists Express Imagination Planning, and then producing sculptures, etchings, jewelry, and various types of paintings are some of the projects of students in art classes. Each student is encouraged to use his own imag- ination and creativity in developing items that reflect part of his own personality. Many of these items will be used in SW's Montage. This program displays student arts. A central theme is developed and each field is rep- resented. This show is known throughout the state for its fine presentation. The Colts made a comeback by beating Midland (19-6), after losing their first three games. The Colt gridders also scored impressive wins over Pontiac Central (21-6) and Northwestern (32-6). They slipped by Bay City Handy (14-13). However the Colts lost to their city rivals Northern (13-6) and Central (26-0). Other losses were to Bay City Central (7-0), in spite of a brillant defensive game. Arthur Hill (26-13), and to Saginaw (20-6). Right halfback Lee English was selected as Most Valuable Player for scoring 30 points during the season and for his fine defensive playing. Fred Campbell also contributed 30 points. Most Im- proved Player for the year was Dave King, and Mike Palmer got the Optimist Award. Jim Vaughn and Bill Bradley will be the captains for '65, replac- ing '64 captains Duane Miller and Mike Palmer. Dennis Bergeron makes another good Kick against Northwestern. 36 Southwestern approached its first annual football game against Northwestern with added incentive—the Victory Vane Trophy was at stake and would go to the victor. The Vane was designed by Susan Bodrie, a Southwestern senior, and consists of a two- pronged vane with a colt and SW at one end, and a wildcat and NW at the opposite end. Mr. Tim Johnson gains valuable yardage needed in the defeat of Bay City Handy. Garret Ebmeyer, SW's principal, and Dr. Jack Mobley, NW's principal, suggested this symbol of exchange between Flint’s two newest high schools. The 1965 Varsity basketball team ended a successful year as District Champion, number two in the Saginaw Valley. The Colts managed to knock off all three of their City rivals at least once and beat every team in the Valley except conference and regional champ, Saginaw. After a slow start, the Southwestern five caught fire at mid-season and downed City champ Northern 60-48 and Valley runner-up Pontiac Central 64-59 in their way to a 14-7 sea- son. It was only last place Flint Central's hex over the Colts that kept them from the City Cham- pionship. The Colts, however, more than evened the score in a 70-53 rout of the Tribe in District play. A six game winning streak was ended in the Regional final as the Colts bowed for the third time to Saginaw, 67-58. Southwestern — A School In Motion . . . Underclassmen Plans for Future Begin Great challenges greeted the new sophomores, as they entered Southwestern for the first time. The class of 1967 met these challenges by electing competent officers who were ready and willing to guide them. These officers organized bake sales and pretzel sales to provide money for their Junior and Senior years. The sophomores have ended the first year prosperously and enjoyably. They are truly look- ing forward to the next two exciting years. Sophomore Class Officers are President Dave Zimmerman, Secretary Judy Joseph, and Vice President-Treasurer Nancy Mullen. Sophomore Class Representatives are Jim Ratner, Sandy Edwards, Cathy Winston, Gayla Edwards, Mary Lou Graff. 64 Keith Adams Pam Adams Donald Adamson Gloria Adcock LeRoy Aglc Robert Agree Dwight Akins Mike Alexander Dick Allinger Samuel Ancira Dallas Anderson Mary Anderson Jerry Armstrong Joe Arnold James Arnould Elaine Arterberrie Joyce Atchley Colleen Auch Jocync Austin Jean Bachmann James Bain Diana Baker Donna Baker Gary Baker Robert Baker Thomas Baker William Baldwin Billy Bankston Marcia Bannister Arnetta Barnett Marie Barnette Kent Barron William Barrow Bryar Bartlett Gary Bassett Marion Bates Benda Batson Robert Bearup Gayle Beaudoin Nancy Becker Ron Beemer Dawn Bennett Dick Bennett Robert Bennett Jerry Bergeron Nate Betts Penny Bickersteth Tami Bickford Bill Bingham Dennis Bishop Karen Bishop Murilyn Bishop Mike Blake Cheryl Blalock Larry Blasdell Terry Blasdell Ron Blom Greg Bodrie Jacqueline Bogart Gretchen Bohm Sandy Bolanowski John Boler Richard Bonner 65 Margie Bowman Ralph Boyd Susan Boyd Deborah Bracy Glenda Bradford Linda Brady Barbara Brain Diane Bratcher Jeanette Brayan Nancy Brevard Y-e-e-e-e-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a!
