A Tribute to Outstanding Administrators On June 30, 1964, the career of the only Flint educator to serve in all five of its high schools will end. Mr. Hilmer Olson.who helped plan the facilities, location, and design of Southwestern will conclude 41 years of service as teacher, administrator, and principal. While earning a bachelor’s degree at Stout Institution, and a master’s in 1938 from the University of Michigan, Mr. Olson came to old Flint High School in 1923, then went to Central in 1942. Besides being active in civic and pro- fessional groups, Mr. Olson has been a prime factor in the promotion of a unified student body. The starting of our first season with a band clad in school colors, equipped athletic teams, and musical and dramatic productions, were all due to the efforts of this dedicated man’. Southwestern Community High School is grateful that its’ first five years have been under the leadership of a man who has given so much of himself to education and South- western. Mr. Hilmer Olson In her many years of service to the Flint Schools. Mrs. Flora Fierstine has devoted her efforts to the betterment of the educational opportunities for the youth of this community. Dedicated to the career of teaching, Mrs. Fier- stine came to Flint after earning her Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State, and her Masters degree from U. of M. First teaching science and math at Technical High School, she later became the Dean of Girls there. Having efficiently held this position for ten years, she became the Dean of Instruction at Southwestern. Southwestern in its beauty and efficiency was partly made possible by the dedicated efforts and desires that she brought forth. In future years, the deeds, lessons, and sincere understanding which Mrs. Flora Fierstine so readily offered us, this year and in those past, will live deep within our hearts. Mrs. Flora Fierstine 5
