Southwestern By Although schools are often considered to be places frequented only during the day, this is certainly not true of Southwestern. Activities, both academic and social, are planned for almost every night in the week. Students are provided with a place for study, learning, and entertainment. The purpose of this yearbook is to show both sides of our school life, not just our daily routine. This is Southwestern, by day and by night. 2 By Night Table of Contents Introduction i Faculty 6 Activities 28 Underclassmen 62 Seniors 108 Sports 154 On November 22, 1963 the life of a man, an outstanding American, was brought to a sudden end. The death of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, in all of its tragic realness, held the heartbeat of the nation transfixed for several days. Americans young and old were drawn closer together by the loss of our devoted leader who, in life and in death commanded the respect of the entire world. We, the faculty and students of Southwestern turn to this ballad as an expression of our feelings. Yes, the heart of the world weighs heavy with the helplessness of tears. For the man cut down in a Texas town in the summer of his years. And we who stay must not ever lose the victories that he won, For wherever men look to freedom, then his soul goes riding on. 4 Southwestern Boy Scouts perform the raising of to half mast in remembrance of the president. Dedicated To The Memory Of John F. Kennedy I A Tribute to Outstanding Administrators On June 30, 1964, the career of the only Flint educator to serve in all five of its high schools will end. Mr. Hilmer Olson.who helped plan the facilities, location, and design of Southwestern will conclude 41 years of service as teacher, administrator, and principal. While earning a bachelor’s degree at Stout Institution, and a master’s in 1938 from the University of Michigan, Mr. Olson came to old Flint High School in 1923, then went to Central in 1942. Besides being active in civic and pro- fessional groups, Mr. Olson has been a prime factor in the promotion of a unified student body. The starting of our first season with a band clad in school colors, equipped athletic teams, and musical and dramatic productions, were all due to the efforts of this dedicated man’. Southwestern Community High School is grateful that its’ first five years have been under the leadership of a man who has given so much of himself to education and South- western. Mr. Hilmer Olson In her many years of service to the Flint Schools. Mrs. Flora Fierstine has devoted her efforts to the betterment of the educational opportunities for the youth of this community. Dedicated to the career of teaching, Mrs. Fier- stine came to Flint after earning her Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State, and her Masters degree from U. of M. First teaching science and math at Technical High School, she later became the Dean of Girls there. Having efficiently held this position for ten years, she became the Dean of Instruction at Southwestern. Southwestern in its beauty and efficiency was partly made possible by the dedicated efforts and desires that she brought forth. In future years, the deeds, lessons, and sincere understanding which Mrs. Flora Fierstine so readily offered us, this year and in those past, will live deep within our hearts. Mrs. Flora Fierstine 5 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Hi h Quality Administrators Benefit S. W. Holding the important post of Deputy Principal is Mr. Robert Rodda whose many responsibilities include the organization of classes and activities and working in close contact with the students, teachers, and other administrators. Our Dean of Counseling, Miss Hulda Gibson, effectively directs our intensive program and provides students with scholarship and college information. As Head Counselor she also assists the other counselors in pro- gramming. The Dean of Students. Mr. James Whittaker, has the varied task of helping students with their problems, either scholastic or social, and in supervising school functions, such as Student Council. Counselors Miss Sarah Andrews. Mr. Clare Eckland. Mrs. Jacquelyn Culnon, and Mr. Paul Johnson look up from a widely known magazine. Counselors, Our Class Coordinators 9 House couselors Mr. Robert Enders, Mr. Stuart Boze. and Mr. Howard Hughes look over student records. English Required For Students General, non-college and college prep English are the courses offered at Southwestern. General English is for the student with reading difficulties. Non-college English tries to create interest in the subject. College prep English combines history and the humanities, the study of foreign lands and relations, American Lit. and American history. Seniors are given a choice between English Lit. and western civilization. Mrs. Yvonne Herron and Miss Patricia Brain look over a new addition to Southwestern’s library. Discussing various uses of the library and its resources for English classes are Mr. Don Purcell, Miss Louise Sherff, Mrs. Marie Kuemmerline, Mr. Douglas Hamilton, and Mr. George Graeber. 10 Mrs. Sadie Collins and Mrs. Elizabeth Calkins help Mr. Jack Riley enact a scene from the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder. Junior English classes read and enacted parts of Our Town. Discussing the possibility of a future assignment are Mrs. Mary Scramuzza, Mrs. Marjory Marshall, and Mr. Jesse Champion. Mr. James Evans and Mr. Patrick Morris notice how students clear the shelves when given specific assignments. After school Mrs Scott and Mr. Jacobs willingly help a student with a problem in business math. Mathematics Courses Gain Importance Math classes play an important role in the arrangement of student programs. The wide variety of cour- ses offered give an equal oppor- tunity to all. Geometry, algebra, trigonome- try, and senior math are important to the college bound, while basic and business math offer training to the non college student. The courses are regulated so as to allow the student the fastest pos- sible advancement with smooth transitions between the different subjects. Mr. Manker and Mr. Brawner puzzle over the “differences” found in trig- onometry problems. Ignoring the basic math problem on the board are Mrs Sandell, Mr. Duncan, and Mr. Tappert. 13 Another one of those unsolved problems are pondered over by algebra and geometry teachers Mr. McMurray, Mr. McGhan, Mr. Kohlhepp, and Mrs. Goldstein. V f In the study of Physics, a simple pendulum is just a mass. Mr. David Hall, on the end of a length of string. Mr. Dick Hoag. Expanded Science Program Biology, chemistry, physics, modern science, and electronics are the five sciences available to students. Biology is the BSCS course. It is based on the chemical origin and advancement of molecular and organic materials. Chem- istry deals with the substances of our environment and the changes in the substances. Physics is the fundamental science of the natural world where the universe, waves, and electicity are stu- died. Modern science combines many sciences to review scientific discover- ies. Electronics is based on theory and craftmanship. It is on a loose basis which allows students to work out pro- blems that time would not otherwise allow. 14 Chemistry isn’t only for students. states Mr. Ed Brown as Mr. Merril Champion demonstrates his technique with the chemicals. Offered For All Students Needs Could it be a funny story that Mr. Lowell Ricky and Mr. Tom Jobson are pondering over, or is it another general science problem? Observing peculiar biology specimens are Mr. Harry Hammond, Mr. Gordon Spencer, and Mr. Orville Greanya. Although the world is not usually in such a state the foreign relations between Mr. Vincent Abrams. Miss Mary Minardo. and Mr. Alex Crane seem quite friendly. Past Becomes Real Through History Miss Rita Hinch, Dept, head, demonstrates the “few” resources available for l£5. History students to Mr. Garth Frost and Mr. Jack VanderVen. 16 Engrossed in conversation are Mr. Ken Green, Mr. Keith Richardson, and Mr. Richard Millar. This year the history depart- ment is offering a new course. Sophomores still take foreign relations and juniors American history but seniors interested in history may take western civilization. Western civilization is the study of European history from early man. This course is combined directly with English class. As you study a certain period in history you will study the literature from that period in English. Mr. George LeBrasseur and Mr. George Genvk are optimistic about the world situation. Languages Challenge Students Mr. Joe Sim demonstrate the correct lull fighting technique as Mr . Jane Chamber provide background music. The study of a language is a very important part of high school education. Southwestern students have a choice of taking French, Spanish, German, or Latin. Study- ing Foreign languages helps stu- dents to learn the customs and cultures of other peoples and coun- tries. Many at Southwestern take more than one language in hopes of becoming proficient in foreign tongues. Long hours of study and drill are involved. Mr Patricia Sloboda. Mr. Robert Kill , and Mr . Helene Footer father In the French room to dlacu plans for the language cl e . Student will u e the language lab to Improve their oral comprehension. “Top Brass” in the musical field are Miss Vivian Crope, Vocal Director, Mr. Raymond Roth, Band and Orchestra Director, and Mr. David Holmes, Assistant Director of Music. Promise Shown In Fine Arts Over the years South- western’s Fine Arts Depart- ment has become known throughout the state and even the nation for the fine cor- relation present here in the fine arts. Together they have produced the Montage, a show intertwining all the arts around a central theme presented each year by Southwestern students. Through the fine and per- forming arts, students can bring out their talents in such various media as dramatics, jewelry making, s culptur e, painting, sketching, instrumental music, and vocal music on various levels from beginning to advanced. 19 “My field is the best, argue Mrs. Nelda Topolka, Drama Coach, Mr. Joe Blaize, metal Art teacher, and Mr. Arthur Koskinen, Art instructor. An Eye For The Future Now listen here all you kids, we’re going to lay down the law, the Business Law, that is emphatically states Mr. Albert Gricius, and Mr. Gary Jacobs. The Business Curriculum is designed to develop business minded citizens who pos- sess both a liberal education and vocational competency in the business field. The course offerings in business education include bookkeeping, shorthand, office practice, retail selling and salesmanship, typing for vocational and personal use, business law, business arithmetic, andnotehand. Although basically vocational, all of these courses also have personal use value. Vocational Business Education Co-op (office) and Distributive Education Co-op (sales) are offered in the senior year. On this Co-op training program students work with employers on part-time jobs in the afternoon and receive school credit, re- muneration, and experience. “Here's the receipt for that grade you ordered 20 jokes Mr. Robert McNamara to his Retail Sales class. People Who Know Their Business Education Mr. Eugene Grice looks approvingly at his first year typing class. Mr. William Bennett and Mr. Clare Eckland discuss what will be done in their typing classes. Miss Lela Withers can't decide whether to teach typing, shorthand, business retailing or driver's ed. Mr. George LaBraaaeur, and Mr. Frank Mazza check over class schedules for their respective gym classes. Gym instructor Mr. Dick Leach instructs a formation plan. Exercise Builds Minds As Well As Bodies The promotion of the physical well- being of the student body is as much a part of the school curriculum as the mental well-being of the students. For this purpose, physical education is required for both boys and girls for three semesters. Girls participate in swimming, dancing, and such sports as volleyball, tennis, and table tennis. Boys engage in swimming, training and conditioning, besides numerous team and individual sports. Gym may be elected in the senior year by students who wish to continue with their physical education. About to play a record to accompany the Swedish exercises of their gym classes are Mrs. Sue Jackovich and Miss Dorothy Breda. Now if I were a student this is how I would do it!” Yet students don't and must learn, which is the job of Mr.Stewart Willett and Mr. Dick Evans our driving instructors. Security Education is an Exciting Requirement Taking a popular “teacher-type” stance is Mr. Tom Potter, security education instrue- All sophomores must take Security Education. Woodworking classes demonstrate fine abilities in a fine art. Wierman. Personalized Program Proves Effective in Second Year Discussing effective personalized program techniques are Mr. Carl Williams, Mr. William Fischer, and Mrs. Helen Murdock. The Personalized Curriculum Pro- gram, better known as P.C.P., was organized to cope with the attendance problem, and to keep our slow learners interested in school. Social Studies, math, and English are the classes taught by the three P.C.P. teachers—Mr. Carl Williams, Mrs. Helen Murdock, and Mr. William Fisher. There are only 15 students in each class so the teacher can give more individual help, get to know them better, and try to understand their problems. Looking at the light side of a special education problem are Mr. George Genyk and Mr. Melvin Gregory. Seen happily pounding out the day’s work are clerical aides: Mrs. Mary Lou Lewis, Mrs. Agatha Polites, Mrs. Clara M. Brown, and Mrs. Bea Hamel. Office Staff Aids School Efficiency . . .Golly, this place is so boring,” quips Mrs. Mary English to Mrs. Glatha A. Kippe, our school’s secretaries. Carlisle beat the 1962 record set by our own Tom Florida by 2.4 seconds for a 10:09.4 at the annual City Meet. He also set a new regional record of 10:40 at Groesbeck Course, Lansing. The J.V. Harriers had a perfect season. At the close they had yet to be defeated. They won eight dual meets. Their undefeated season brought them two titles, both city and valley championships. 164 Coach Gordon Spencer Jimmy Stewart puts on a burst of speed for the Harriers. Cross Country J.V. The Southwestern Colts opened their basketball season with Pontiac Northern. Our season started out fairly badly by losing the first two games, but we came back with one victory and then went down hill again. We regained our position by defeating all but one team that was above us. After our winning streak we lost our gain and then finished our season by beating Bay City Central. In the district eliminations we beat Flushing and Beecher before losing to Flint Central in the district finals. Our Valley standing at the season’s end was fifth place with a six won, six loss record. Our regular seasonal record was nine wins and nine losses. Coach Roy McMurray Rick Yuille attempts a hook shot against city rival, Flint Central. Jump shot by Tim Reasoner scores two points for Colt Cagers while Northern players attempt to block the shot. Our Tankers had a great season this year. They broke every record on the board with the exception of the 1961 diving record (Tom Juneac) and the 1963 100 yard backstroke record (Frank Frey). On the third day of the regular season we took fourth place in the Vehicle City Relays. For the first time in our history we “kept our heads above water” and took the City Championship. Yet the biggest highlight of the past season was our fourth place in the Saginaw Valley Cham- pionships. We again placed above our rival Flint schools. We had two state qualifiers—Mike Castro and Tom Austin. In the state, Mike placed eighth in the 400 yard freestyle and twelfth in the 200 yard free style. Tom hooked a tenth in the 200 yard individual medley. Coach Dick Leach and our Colts experienced the best baseball season in our school history by winning the City and Saginaw Valley Championships with a 13-3 record. This makes the fourth consecutive year that our Colts have tied or won the City Championship. Top flight pitching, an air of tight defense, and hustling baseball were the main assets of the 1963 team. We were led by Co-Captains Bobby Reed and Carl Cmejrek. Bobby set a host of pitching records in his three years of stardom; while Carl led the Colt hitters with the highest batting average, most hits, most RBI’s, and most home runs. Randy Adams was top defensive player. Bobby Reed was awarded the Kenneth M. Green Trophy for the most valuable player. Dale Clary was elected by his teammates to captain the 1964 baseball team. Coach Leach is looking forward to another fine season in 1964 with six returning lettermen in Captain Dale Clary, Mike Ramsey, Rod Scott, Dave Green, Fred Campbell, and Curt Smith. John Wentworth was selected the most valuable player, and the honorary co-captains were Dan Welton and John Dufelmeier. 179 Coach Bob Diment Another Perfect Season Varsity Golf: John Wetherbee, Bob Bernstein, Coach Kohlhepp, Steve Braun, Paul Topolka, Craig Swift. For the second consecutive year the Colt golf team compiled a perfect record of 13-0 and also victories in the City, Valley, Regional, and State Finals. Leading the team throughout the year was Steve Braun. His brilliant play earned him the medalist honors at the Regionals with a 73, and runner-up honors at the State Finals with a 77. Steve also set a scoring record with a 76.0 average. Following Braun’s 73 at Atlas Valley Country Club in the Regionals were Bob Bernstein (77), Paul Topolka (81), and Craig Swift (76). This total of 307 put them 14 strokes ahead of the second place team, Rochester. Coach John Kohlhepp Golf Team Has Winning Season - v Mr. Tom Potter coached the J. V. Golf Team of 1963. The team was composed of six sophomores and four juniors. At the end of the season their record was eleven wins and two losses.
