Presented by the Yearbook Staff Southwestern High School Flint, Michigan Volume I 1960 5 Dectrum '60 FLINT PUBLIC LIBRARY General Reference Dept. Our theme THE SEED AND ITS FIRST FRUIT has direct comparison to our new school and its stu- dent body. To help visualize the relationship even further we are using the apple seed, following its growth into the fruit. We begin with the SEED which was planted three years ago in the form of BLUEPRINTS of our school. The seed then becomes more stable by grow- ing ROOTS-our ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY. For three years, the seed grew and now we can see the result: the young apple tree with its TRUNK and reaching BRANCHES-our ACTIVITIES, STUDENT BODY, ATHLETICS, and ACADEMICS. Next, the tree prepares to produce its fruits. BLOSSOMS—UNDER- CLASSMEN appear. Finally, we have the first fruit of the tiny seed: The APPLE-our FIRST GRADUATING CLASS. latde ol Contenti AdnunbibuituMi and 6 22 92 44 64 Senioni Ond x, • 122 148 Qua icUool ii yuuM Uf . . . From a bare field, our school started to emerge. yiawi Uf,. . . Southwestern , a finished product, reflected against the snow. During the winter and summer our contractors, carpenters and faculty poured nutrition into our school foundation. The workmen had many visits from im- patient students during the summer months who wanted their school to be open for classes in the fall. There were many surprised looks and opinions when the first student body entered Southwestern to find it had not grown to a finished product. Hands and patience—the workmen and students—have made South- western grow and flourish. Many rooms lacked ceil- ings and windows, but we didn't mind—we were help- ing to build our school. As a seed constantly regenerates its fruit, our school has grown into a finished product capable of consistently producing new fruit. Our school has grown, is growing, and always shall grow in stature and op- portunity. ana, cyuuuina L jrffnmfr pH ) -Horipvpptnuftf fcuiULuuf Previously principal at Flint Tech, Mr. Olson now fills that position at South- western. Mr. Olson has an A. B. degree from Stout Institute of Technology and also a Master's degree from the Uni- versity of Michigan. He was a supervisor of the plans and organization of Southwestern and feels that we have all the facilities any stu- dent could ever wish to have in high school. 8 044A. fruudhitian Formerly from Longfellow Junior High, Mr. Ebemeyer is deputy principal at Southwest- ern. He is chiefly in charge of programming and enrollment, school organization, and gradu- ation. He feels the administra- tion has a good sharing of the responsibility. Formerly dean of girls at Flint Tech, Miss Fierstine is now pre- siding at our school in that position. She is always willing to help our girls in any way pos- sible. Previously from Central, Mr. Whittaker now acts in the capa- city of dean of boys here. Or- ganization and order in the school has been largely due to his efforts. He has done a won- derful job in counselling our boys. History teachers Vincent Abrams and George LeBrasseur go over some of their students' notebooks while comparing classes. When Kenneth Green states a fact, stu- dents know that they'd better remember it. 12 Once you know English, French comes easy, agree Robert Ellis, a French teacher, and Mrs. Constance Burt, an English teacher. Conversing after closs, we find Alex Crane and Robert Rodda waiting for Miss Rita Hinch's reply. In looking for reference material for their English classes. Miss O. Anderson and Miss Helene Burns consult the card catalogue. 1 3 The modern world is now becoming evident in the biology classes. Harry Hammond explains this to James Mayer, Miss Sara Andrews, and Mrs. Jacqueline Culnon. Bland are thoroughly aware of. Seeming to disagree about the time of their next teachers' meeting are Garth Frost, Ray Henry, and Patrick Braden. 14 Demonstrating some of the new machines in the machine shop, Homer Randall and Joe Blaize look it over carefully, along with Russell Ammon and Wilfred Crissman, who are looking at a blueprint which goes hand in hand with these machines. Miss Dorothy Breda and Miss Allison James look over the situation to find out how soon the gym will be completed and ready for use. Paul Johnson is conversing with Roger Cherry while in the process of drawing up some new printing ideas. 15 Albert Gricius and Mrs. Esther Fineburg go over a work sheet together from their bookkeeping classes. In the background we see the bleachers taking shape in the new gymnasium. Mr. Frank Mazza takes a break from classes to see where he will be holding his future gym classes. To Woody Daingess, Nina Theill, and Dick Shupe, Richard Evans explains the fundamentals of thread- ing a machine, in preparation for one of the many movies in Security Education. Mr. Robert Browner uses paper triangles while demonstrating to his geometry I class the various types. Mr. Eugene Grice shows how essential a mimeographing machine is when he makes out tests for his typing and shorthand classes. Punching Mike Green's student union card at a basketball game, we see William Bennett. English and drama teacher, Mrs. Nelda Topolka calls on a student to begin the reading in one of the new plays. Now, Mr. Photographer, is this how you wont the picture posed? Left to right: Larry McGhan, John Kohlhepp, Miss Kay Anderson, and Roy Man- lier. In our school's newly completed chemistry lob. Getting the girls acquainted with the new equipment in the home economics department is Miss Constance Pratt. Mrs. Judy Belenchio and Sandy Briggs count out the number of books needed for the third hour Latin I class. Utilizing one of the many informative books in the library is Mrs. Marion Farber, the librarian. JP.iltA uf. and office- wosUt Without the paperwork done in the office of our school, the school could not function properly, for it is this work that is part of the backbone of any school. Books and the issuing of books are another important part of this backbone. For without these, our academic life would be dull and un- interesting. Doing one of her many routine jobs of the day is Mrs. Donna Best, of the office staff. Telephones ringing, answering ques- tions ... all these are just a days work for Mrs. Kay Kippe. Forms and letters to be typed for new school business, administrators, and students—How does Mrs. Mary English keep up? 19 Getting lost in our school is certainly a humorous incident to new teachers, Mrs. Ernestine Carter and Mr. Donald Thornburg. Mrs. Mildred Matthews, our school nurse, writes out an excuse for a sick student. Mrs. Anne Mooney, cafeteria man- ager, and Mrs. Myrtle Wetenhall. 20 Mrs. Lino Allen, cashier, and Mrs. Emma Hicks, assistant cook. Mrs. Marion Bess. The opening game was a rousing suc- cess for the Colts as they easily over- powered Kearsley by a score of 33-6. The following game with Fenton (7-6) was a close victory. October 2, the Colts met Northern for their first city game and won a brilliant victory of 6-0, scor- ing the only touchdown of the game during the first quarter, and then hold- ing Northern scoreless. Southwestern won its fourth successive game October 9, by defeating Flushing 41-13. Blue and white scored a total of five times. Although a bitter disappointment to the Colts, the Central vs. Southwestern game (13-6) showed all the fight and spirit that makes foot- ball exciting. We got back into our win- ning streak by defeating Owosso (14-13) and Lapeer (37-0). The Colts lost to Muskegon Catholic Central (19-20) after playing a rousing game with the number three team in the state. Climaxing the season, the Colts were temporarily disheartened by a 6-0 loss to Midland, played under adverse weather conditions. Our Junior Varsity football team improved greatly as the season progressed, although they still haven't had the extensive training and prac- tice which is definitely essential. Their first two games demonstrated the need for further training. They improved immensely in their next game against Lapeer and showed their running ability when they played Flushing. Central's game was a heartbreaker as the boys played a beautiful game but lost it in the closing seconds. The Junior Varsity met Northern for a second time and had to admit they Just couldn't beat them. Reaching the high point of the season, the Southwestern Harriers tied for first place with Lansing Sexton in the region- al at Lansing. Coached by George LeBrasseur, this was one of the team's big victories of a very successful first year. During the first big season, the Colts lost only one dual meet, and that was to Saginaw Arthur Hill. They also missed the city title by one point, which means that our crosstown rivals, the Northern Vikings, gained a victory. In the state meet, the boys placed eighth out of sixteen competing teams. John Niergarth won the city cham- pionship, running two miles in 10:43 minutes. Chester Harris now holds the school record of 10:37, set during the valley meet. Coached by Alex Crane, former Flint Central swimming coach, the team was handicapped without their own pool for practice. Having to shuttle between Durham Nata- torium, Central's pool, and the Y pool, the Colt's were never really able to practice in earnest. The swimmers showed improved style as the season progressed, and the team has high hopes for next year, when the pool is completed. They're off! . . . A few fine performances and a good overall showing started the Colts successfully on their initial basketball season. Team supporters were assured of a fine showing as the season progressed by the open- ing defeat of Bay City Handy (58-50). In the second successful game, Coach McMurray's cagers defeated Flint Central in the first of the City basketball series. The fighting five opened with a 12-6 first quarter lead, expanded it to a huge 35-20 halftime advantage and held off Central opposition to emerge victors with a score of 64-52. The Colts suffered the first defeat of the season in a closely-contested, but low-scoring performance against Flint Northern (42-39). The Colts trailed throughout the first half, forged ahead at the third quarter post, but were unable to meet the final Viking rush. Victory returned to the Southwest- ern scene as the cagers defeated Beecher (55-47). A nip and tuck game throughout the first half, it was broken wide open in Colt style as the cagers grabbed a sixteen point lead at the third period break. The winning streak continued as the Colts downed Bay City Handy (53-31); and the Lapeer Panthers (81-50) in fast opening and strong closing performances. Two one-point losses brought the wining streak to a halt: Midland (71-70) and Alpena (70-69). Both games were heart-breakers, as the deciding points were made in the closing seconds. The cagers' second meeting with Northern proved disastrous (47-30). The Colts tried gamely to generate a spark, but the breaks seemed to be against them. The Colts bounced back to the winners' circle again following a victorious second meeting with Mid- land (57-55). While the closing score was close, the Colts dominated the game with a show of their previous winning style. A nearly disastrous meeting with Owosso High tested the Colts' skill on the hardwood. In a tense, double-overtime game, the cagers' held even with the opposition throughout the game, but broke away in the remaining seconds of the second overtime to defeat Owosso 78-72. Southwestern's second meeting with Flint Central proved victorious, giving the Colts a 2-2 score in the City championship series, as com- pared to Northern's 4-4 and Cen- tral's 0-4 record. The game was evenly matched to the last fifteen seconds, with a score of 52-50, Cen- tral's favor, when the Colts made a sudden comeback, scoring 6 points before the buzzer ended the game. An away game at Bay City con- tinued the Colt's winning streak with a closing score of 62-44. Alpena offered a challenge to the fighting five for the second time, and this time it was met, as the Colts reigned with a score of 70-59, giving them a 10-4 record for the regular season. The final score was deceptive, however, since the battle was evenly tied until the latter part of the fourth quarter, when the Colts forged ahead to gain an eleven point lead. 55 Ron Hartman (21) and Walt Franklin (13) watch anxiously as Doug McDonald (34) goes up for two. Four matmen earned fourths in the valley: Gerald Swanson (112 lbs.) Ed Thayer (120 lbs.) Gary Goodall (138 lbs.) and Reed Birnie (145 lbs.). These wrestlers, along with Tex Wells (103 lbs.) who was the city champion in 1959, formed the nucleus of the squad. Coach Garner has hopes for a more successful season next year when ten of the twelve boys will return. He wants to see more boys try out for the team, and he feels that the squad needs more student body behind it. 58 Coach Ken Garner observes Reed Birnie's grasp on Bill Pribble as he instructs squad members (kneeling, left to right) Ed Graham, Tom Goode, Arthur Kelly, Barry Saunders, Dave Florida, Orvell Barbee, Bill Gatlin, Ed Thayer. This year, unlike basketball and foot- ball, the golf team looks forward to competing in the Saginaw Valley Con- ference. Golf schedules are drawn up shortly before the games are played, whereas the football and basketball schedules are planned far in advance. With good playing for a well ex- perienced team, our school should be headed for a very successful season. Look at it go! This year's tennis team, coached by Al Gricius, is primarily composed of former Tech- nical and Central players. Previous letter winners from Flint Technical include: Gene Kiesel, Bob Sinnott, Gary Larsen, Ron Brown, Cordell Opie, Larry Metzger, and Dick Irwin. Bob Sinnott was Flint Technical's most valuable player last year. Central's contributions include lettermen Dave Fainburg and Paul Walton, along with Dennis Riker, Central's most valuable sophomore. Mr. Gricius also expects help from a number of sophomore and junior boys coming out for the first time. Coach Gricius has high hopes for this year's team. According to the head coach, the city title is within our grasp, and he sees no reason why we shouldn't be a major contender for the valley crown, if we are allowed in the Saginaw Valley Conference. We are hoping for Southwestern's first tennis team to have as successful a season as the rest of the sports have had, Mr. Gricius concluded. 60 I'm ready! The boys will be divided into Varsity and Junior Varsity according to the skill they display during practice. Dick Leach, Varsity coach, was in training for the Detroit Tigers, and Joe Roberson, J. V. coach, was in training for the former Brooklyn Dodgers until an arm injury prevented him from joining the pro team as pitcher. This season looks hopeful with several experienced players and a good selection. Here it comes, Merv! Jack Hinkle, former Flint Tech football coach, is in charge of Field events. George LeBrasseur, who holds titles of Mid-American shot put champion (1949) and State Inter-Collegiate and State A.A.U. Javelin champion (1949-1950) takes over training of distance runners. With the combination of several previous lettermen from other schools, and nearly the whole Colt cross- country squad (who were regional champions this year), the coaches expect, and have reason to expect, a good season. Sophomores do strange things, don't they? Reading Southwestern's first newspaper keeps all interested. Left to right: Virginia Johnson, Marilyn Ross, Bill Turnbull. You mean we forgot a chair? With the first year behind them, the juniors anticipated a full year of new and interesting experiences. After a month of confusion and bewilder- ment, the eleventh graders regained their foot- ing and proceeded to elect their first class offi- cers. The new officers proved themselves capable of the responsibilities bestowed on them by their fellow students. It was not long before the ball was rolling. Earning money for the Junior Prom, they set out in earnest with many projects, the most important of which was the Junior Play. Their labors were rewarded by a sucessful prom in the spring. With the year finally coming to a close, the juniors look back on a wonderful year; but look forward more eagerly to their senior year. BloMomd. There were many adjustments to be made at the beginning of the year, but as time went on, things started to bloom with spirit, moral, school colors, school nickname, class officers, money projects for the prom, dances, clubs, wins and losses in sports, organization, co-operation, new friendships, and to top things off, a wonderful senior prom. There was everything to make a senior year complete. These are treasured memories and they will al- ways remain so, but they must, as seniors, leave them behind and go on to the new and greater walks of life. Each of them with the help of God, will go his own way to success and happiness. They go forward in the world as the first gradu- ating class of Southwestern and the first fruits of her tree. Senior class officers Cordell Opie, president, Ron Hartman, vice-president-treasurer, and Sue Heginbottom, secretary, are busy at one of the board meetings. Sue and Ron count money from one of the Senior Penny Days, while Cordell leads the discussion. 124 ValedUctonicM Edward Pearce £cdui rfosUGM, 125 Sabra Wilson Patti Stanard JliCflt jbiiiincticut Lenore Metcalf Janet Beach David Fainburg Marilyn Harvey Carol Rubel 126 Mary Totten Albert Barnes Judith Provine James Burger These seniors take time out during lunch hour to read THE BAT, a well-known comic strip at Southwestern.
