This year’s swimming team performed very well in their division. Southwestern finished third. The team won three meets and lost two. The performance of this team is probably our best won-lost record in years. This can be attributed to the female presence on the team. Womens’ swim team was not funded and no out- side help came to their aid. The girls were invited by Coach Weber to participate with the boys’ team and look what happened. Coach Ron John- son moved up as Varsity Coach and since this was his first year as head man, there were many changes in the game plan. We appreciate all they do for our athletic program, but most of all we love to hear they yell — WHO’S THE BEST IN THE WEST? THE BIG S.O. 42 44 All I Want For Christmas Cheryl Bates was crowned by Reggie Baldwin during half-time ceremonies. Houston Astro Pitch- er, Reggie Baldwin, Class of 1973-Valedic- torian and All Ameri- can High School Pitch- er, returned to his Alma Mater for homecoming. We were proud to have Reggie return and act as Grand Marshall of the Homecoming Pa- rade. Mrs. M. Thibault drives the French Club’s entry in the homecoming parade. Mrs. Thibault was a vital part of homecoming for many years. She retired this year leaving many happy memories. In 1975, we broke with tradition, the football team did not choose the homecoming queen or her court. The homecoming committee decided to opt for a fund raising event, to help the pre- carious financial position of Southwestern High School. Each girl who wanted to run for homecoming queen sold tickets and the girl with the greatest sales volume would reign as Homecoming Queen. Pictured on pages 50 and 51 are the girls who did an outstanding job, the queen and her court. All the girls who participated in the contest were awarded trophies at the homecoming dance. The money from this event was used to pay for the remaining debt of the 1975 yearbook. The 1977 Yearbook Staff wishes to congratu- late the young ladies for their outstanding ef- forts and to show our appreciation, they were chosen for the color-page spread, another first for the PROSPECTOR. 47 Homecoming At The Big S. O. Marching Band Homecoming Entertainment Kathy Bates, Anna Waire, Audrey Matterson, Juanita Williams, Shelia Campbell, Portia Jones, Beverly Bates. 48 St. Clair Mitchell, Drum Major. One of the finest assets of South- western High is the Marching Band. Not only do they perform during the football season, but re invited to many community parades in the Met- ropolitan area, under the direction of Dr. Limuel Dokes. Our half time performances are crowd pleasers. The play was presented by the S.W. Drama Club, sponsored by Mr. Dubuar and Ms. Finney. Drama club members rehearsed for this performance, so well, that their lines were flaw- less. Performing A t Halftime One of our activities is the Marching Band. Our Band this year took part in the opening ceremonies of the Detroit Plaza Hotel in the Renaissance Center. 59 60 Winter Trip-Senior When the Seniors decided to take a weekend trip to Toronto, they were prepared for a good time. Winter is the same in Ontario as it is in Michigan. It was an 11 hour train ride because of the worst blizzard of the season. These pictures tell the story, restless, and weary, and anxious to get there. The class of ’77 found many different ways to idle away the wait. 61 Modem Dance Club Modern Dance Club is an extention of the dance class at Southwestern. Under the direction of Mrs. B. VanOast, our dancers have learned the use of locomotor movements that are pleasing to watch. Isn’t that right, guys? The objectives of the Army Junior ROTC at Southwestern are as follows: To develop in a student a strong sense of intregrity, responsibility and respect for others. 2. To increase the student’s in- sight into ethical values and principles. 3. To develop the student’s ability to live and work cooperatively with other peo- ple regardless of their background. 4. To develop a student’s ability to commuin- cate effectively both orally and in writ- ing. 5. To develop in a student a strong sense of respect for constituted authori- ty and established institutions that pro- vide the foundation for our nation’s strength. It is an intelligence above language The Most I Can Do For My Friend Is Simply To Be His Friend Our Salutatorian and Prom Queen, Miss Valerie Glosson is the answer. The yearbook staff agreed that Sheila Hampton and Zoe Carrencjie best exempli- fy what it is to be a FRIEND. One we call ed Twiggy, the other was not. One passed the pencil test the other could not. One was inducted into the National Honor So- ciety, the other was not. One passed driv- ing training the other could not. The only thing they shared, besides food, they were always late, but they were simply friends. 134 The Language of Friendship at Southwestern as seen by our camera. 135 Happiness Is...
