C oss History by V1ncent Kanalos and Sh1rley Sherwood V1ncent Kanalos Sh1rley Sherwood Scene Local record shop one afternoon T1me January 1954 Hey Sh1rley look' Ablg month end sale on both old and new records' Let s go 1n and look them over W mlght be able to f nd a few good ones Golly V1nce they werent k1dd1ng when they sa1d old These aren t exactly what you m1ght call new D you remember these? ' Dream a Lzttle Dream of Me by Frankle La1ne, A Bushel and a Peck by Betty Hutton and Perry Como, Be My Love by Marxo Lanza, Mona LISR, by Nat K1ng Cole, I Apologlze by Tony Mart1n, If by Perry Como, and there are so many other ones we d be here the rest of the after noon l1sten1ng to them Boy they certa1nly br1ng back a lot of memor1es don t they Sh1rley'? They certamly do Those tunes were popular just about the t1me we flrst entered Southwestern as fresh men There were about 150 of us 1n January of 1950 Boy weren t we a bunch of crazy m1xed up fresh1es, fall1ng for those elevator passes? The varlous schools that we came from were Hunter, W1lson Morley McM1llan Boynton Cary Nemas and even Sandwlch Colleg1ate 1n Wmdsor Gradually we started to get acqualnted w1th South western and Jolned some of the many clubs mcludmg the Y Teens Rapxd Wrlters Nurses, Red Cross H1 Y Lettermen s Young Men s Servlce and Dramat1c s Club Some of the students tr1ed out for the varlous sports and muslcal act1v1t1es were Pr1sc1lla Ban Mary Gonder, Imogene Hogan Tony Farchlone Paul Nemeth Pete Bowman, George Regan, Ollver Lagman Joyce Ch1lds V1ncent Kanalos and Don Carmlchael Among those earmng letters W1nn1ng f1rst place 1n an oratorlcal declamatlon was Val Zaw1la w1th h1s speech of The Common Cause , by Woodrow W1lson Sh1r1ey Summers won recogn1t1on 1n the dramat1c declamatlon contest The wlnner of two consecutlve typlng contests held by the Rapld Wrlters Club, was Shlrley Sherwood Dur1ng our stay at Southwestern many changes oc curred We had our blood typed and chests x Rayed for tuberculos1s by the Red Cross MOb11e Un1t To add to the populatlon of Southwestern H1gh School approxl mately 600 Taylor Townsh1p and Ecorse Townsh1p students took over the 9B grade m September, 1952 and 1953 Also the old Prospector 0ff1Ce, and rooms 239 237, and 235 were torn down to make way for the new Home Economlcs Department aluxur1ous new home 11v1ng un1t wh1ch was completed 1n the fall of 1953 As eleventh graders we were anx1ously awa1t1ng our flrst class day It f1nally came on December 12 1952 We dec1ded to have yellow carnat1ons w1th blue and gold rlbbons That mght one group enyoyed themselves tremendously at a party g1venby Pr1sc1lla Ban Another group of 11A s had a gather1ng at Cottrell Hall Chosen to head the 12B class as presxdent was Paul Nemeth Capably ass1st1ng h1m were Pete Bowman as George Regan as secretary Commlttees were soon chosen to see that the varlous class act1v1t1es were properly carrled out The most successful of our events was the 12B Var1ety Show en t1tled The Hollywood Star Rev1ew , wh1ch took place on Apr1l 15 16 17 1953 Another enjoyable event wh1ch took place on May 15 1953, was the 12B dance called the May Hop featur1ng Bert DJerk1ss and h1s band One of the most strenuous class act1v1t1es was the 12B 12A basketball game The 12B g1rls won 12B boys lost May 29 1953, was the day on wh1ch we celebrated our 12B Class Day followed by a party that n1ght at the home of Shlrley Sherwood Our flowers were tmted green carnat1ons w1th kelly green rlbbons Wh1le 1n the 12B several part1es were g1venby mem bers of the class Pr1sc1lla Ban gave a Halloween party wh1ch was a great success Joyce Ch1lds had a b1rth day party on February 7 wh1le a party was g1ven for Sh1rley Sherwood on December 13 1952 Around the corner was the New Year so to celebrate the occas1on, a group of students got together at the home of Sharon Zundel where everyone had a wonderful t1me C cont1nued on page 40 J I o Q N41 . : y . . .. , - ,, . . - . . 7 7 ' .
