We know that without their help our senior year could not have been as enjoyable as it was, nor could we have accomplished what we did. Miss Butts, one of the loveliest and most loved teachers at South- western, attended Albion College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree. She teaches commercial subjects. Miss Butts is known by the students for her lovely smile Mr Yatchman was graduated from Southwestern in January 1942 After spending some time in the service of his country he attended Michigan State College graduating in 1949 He is now working toward his Master s degree at Wayne University He coaches the Prospector football and track teams Although Mr Yatchman has been teaching at Southwestern for only one and one half years he has made many friends among the students Mr Michael Yatchman Dedlcotlon With warm affection and deep gratitude for the many things you have done to help us we the senior class of January 1954 dedicate our Pic torial to Miss Mary Fraser and Mr Vincent McLellan Although she graduated from Northwestern High School here in Detroit Miss Mary Fraser was born in Glasgow Scotland She attended Wayne University and the University of Michigan where she received her Bach elor and Master of Arts degrees She also attended the American School of Classical Studies 1n Athens Greece Before coming to Southwestern Miss Fraser taught at Cook Elementary Here she teaches Latin and English A good many senior girls remember Miss Fraser sthoughtfulness and willingness to help us whenever we needed it Each girl was remembered on her birthday with a card andbest wishes We sincerely hope that the classes to come appreciate her kindness and thoughtfulness as we did Mr Vincent McLellan was born in Detroit and is an alumnus of Southwestern Before coming to Southwestern Mr McLellan taught at Mackenzie for six years He attended law school at the University of Detroit where he received his law degree and was then admitted to the Bar of Michigan He also received his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Wayne University All of the senior class will remember Mr McLellan for his under standing and especially his patience with a few He was always kind enough to let us discuss our 12A problems in his class This wonderful teacher has always been a good friend to us 4 We will always be grateful to these teachers for their eagerness to help us for their wise counsel and for all that they have done for us Miss Mary Fraser az. , Mr Vincent McLella1 Paul Nemeth Albert Wright President Vice-President A Class QFFICSFS of January, 1954 henna Butskx D01'1S Pro 1' v airneasu 9 ec,-eta an FY President s Address by Paul Ne meth In a few days we w1ll be alumm of Southwestern Our four year stay at Southwestern w1ll be completed But we can rest assured that we leave here better equ1pped 1n m1nd and heart to meet and solve the many tasks that are to confront us ln our da1ly 11fe Now that the confl1ct 1n Korea has reached an arm1 easler and young men can further the1r educatlon 1n hlgher 1nst1tut1ons of learmng wlthout the d1sturb1ng call to arms Let us pray that we w1ll never see another plaque 11ke the one that has been 1n our audltorlum s1nce the end of World War II Each of us has obl1gat1ons 1n mamtamlng domest1c and world tranqu111ty We must aSS1St our leaders 1n every way posslble 1n securmg and hold1ng a lastmg peace throughout the world so that the people of th1s natxon can 11ve ln harmony w1th people of other natlons Strong bonds of frlendshlp and understandmg are needed between 1nd1v1duals, commun1t1es and countr1es W can do our share 1n promot1ng thxs understandmg We shall mlss the many fr1ends we have made here at Southwestern as each of us takes h1s own path 1nto the world It IS our a1m to be understandmg and con On behalf of the graduatmg class I express our deepest thanks to our class sponsors Mr M1chael Yatchman and M1ss Grace Butts, and to our prmcxpals Mr Walter Draper and MISS Bern1ce Spencer, for the1r guldance 1n makmg our sen1or year prof1tab1e as well as enJoyable I thank you fellow classmates for th1s honor wh1ch you have bestowed upon me Ishall remember lt always May God help you always 1n everythmg you attempt O I x . xy C ' r S ' 7 - . .I Q 4 1 1 1 , . We were tricked, we were teased by seniors so mighty, Elevator passes were not taken lightly. We hunted, we looked, we peeked and pried, Now, I wonder where did that elevator hide. S As sophomores we began to think we belonged, We won recognition for which we had longed. On 11A Day we dressed slick as eelsg The girls walked the halls teetering on heels. Then seniors at last we finally became, Our variety show acquired great fame. The 12B dance went without a miss, As we danced to the music of Bert Djerkiss. Our thespians presented The Little Dog Laughed , A psychologic comedy executed with craft. The faculty game and our senior dance passed, Flower day and Gown Day were left to the last. The varlous schools that we came from were Hunter, W1lson Morley McM1llan Boynton Cary Nemas and even Sandwlch Colleg1ate 1n Wmdsor Gradually we started to get acqualnted w1th South western and Jolned some of the many clubs mcludmg the Y Teens Rapxd Wrlters Nurses, Red Cross H1 Y Lettermen s Young Men s Servlce and Dramat1c s Club Some of the students tr1ed out for the varlous sports and muslcal act1v1t1es were Pr1sc1lla Ban Mary Gonder, Imogene Hogan Tony Farchlone Paul Nemeth Pete Bowman, George Regan, Ollver Lagman Joyce Ch1lds V1ncent Kanalos and Don Carmlchael Among those earmng letters W1nn1ng f1rst place 1n an oratorlcal declamatlon was Val Zaw1la w1th h1s speech of The Common Cause , by Woodrow W1lson Sh1r1ey Summers won recogn1t1on 1n the dramat1c declamatlon contest The wlnner of two consecutlve typlng contests held by the Rapld Wrlters Club, was Shlrley Sherwood Dur1ng our stay at Southwestern many changes oc curred We had our blood typed and chests x Rayed for tuberculos1s by the Red Cross MOb11e Un1t To add to the populatlon of Southwestern H1gh School approxl mately 600 Taylor Townsh1p and Ecorse Townsh1p students took over the 9B grade m September, 1952 and 1953 Also the old Prospector 0ff1Ce, and rooms 239 237, and 235 were torn down to make way for the new Home Economlcs Department aluxur1ous new home 11v1ng un1t wh1ch was completed 1n the fall of 1953 As eleventh graders we were anx1ously awa1t1ng our flrst class day It f1nally came on December 12 1952 We dec1ded to have yellow carnat1ons w1th blue and gold rlbbons That mght one group enyoyed themselves tremendously at a party g1venby Pr1sc1lla Ban Another group of 11A s had a gather1ng at Cottrell Hall Chosen to head the 12B class as presxdent was Paul Nemeth Capably ass1st1ng h1m were Pete Bowman as George Regan as secretary Commlttees were soon chosen to see that the varlous class act1v1t1es were properly carrled out The most successful of our events was the 12B Var1ety Show en t1tled The Hollywood Star Rev1ew , wh1ch took place on Apr1l 15 16 17 1953 Another enjoyable event wh1ch took place on May 15 1953, was the 12B dance called the May Hop featur1ng Bert DJerk1ss and h1s band One of the most strenuous class act1v1t1es was the 12B 12A basketball game The 12B g1rls won 12B boys lost May 29 1953, was the day on wh1ch we celebrated our 12B Class Day followed by a party that n1ght at the home of Shlrley Sherwood Our flowers were tmted green carnat1ons w1th kelly green rlbbons Wh1le 1n the 12B several part1es were g1venby mem bers of the class Pr1sc1lla Ban gave a Halloween party wh1ch was a great success Joyce Ch1lds had a b1rth day party on February 7 wh1le a party was g1ven for Sh1rley Sherwood on December 13 1952 Around the corner was the New Year so to celebrate the occas1on, a group of students got together at the home of Sharon Zundel where everyone had a wonderful t1me C cont1nued on page 40 J I o Q N41 . : y . . .. , - ,, . . - . . 7 7 ' .
