The Spade . . . IN THE SPRING OF 1921, the pick and spade were used to break the ground for the Southwestern build- ing. Since then, each graduating class has presented these implements to the 12Bis in a traditional ttcarry on spirit, that characterizes each successive class. As representative number thirty-three, I present the spade to you, knowing that you realize the full signifi- cance of your charge. On this spade sixty-four classes have tied their class ribbonsesmall reminders of their achievement. All have had a part in making Southwestern the school of which we are proud. IT IS AN HONOR to accept this tradition-worn spade in behalf of the 123 class. We will endeavor to uphold the standards that have already been set by you, and by the graduating classes that have gone before you. When it is our turn to pass on this cherished token, we hope that we may pass on not only the spade, but also a gen- uine respect for the principles it represents. The Pick . . . IT IS WITH HONOR and pleasure that I pass on to you this pick, a symbol of our school. It is the same tool with which in 1921 ground was broken for this building. But it is more than a tool, for with it were entrenched the high ideals and standards that I pass on to you, and that we once promised to uphold. This promise is now fulfilled. So, our work done, we bid you farewell and good fortune. aemz WW THIS PICK HAS A LONG record of glory that began with the day when the first piece of sod was turned. It' is my honor and pleasure, on behalf of the 12B class, to receive this gift. We will sincerely endeavor to uphold the ideals for which this pick stands, to preserve'it, and to pass it on to our worthy successors. The time has come to say Farewell! Now I salute one like a father! To all of our friends we know so well. To help us, for him, is never a bother. Now comes the end of school-time fun, And if his friends were in a straight line, For our real life has just begun. To salute them all would take quite a time. A warm spot in my heart I keep, Of course, yeulve guessed, our beloved principal, For schoolday friendships warm and deep. The sincere friend and guide of each and all.
