The Spade . . . IN THE SPRING OF 1921, the pick and spade were used to break the ground for the Southwestern build- ing. Since then, each graduating class has presented these implements to the 12Bis in a traditional ttcarry on spirit, that characterizes each successive class. As representative number thirty-three, I present the spade to you, knowing that you realize the full signifi- cance of your charge. On this spade sixty-four classes have tied their class ribbonsesmall reminders of their achievement. All have had a part in making Southwestern the school of which we are proud. IT IS AN HONOR to accept this tradition-worn spade in behalf of the 123 class. We will endeavor to uphold the standards that have already been set by you, and by the graduating classes that have gone before you. When it is our turn to pass on this cherished token, we hope that we may pass on not only the spade, but also a gen- uine respect for the principles it represents. The Pick . . . IT IS WITH HONOR and pleasure that I pass on to you this pick, a symbol of our school. It is the same tool with which in 1921 ground was broken for this building. But it is more than a tool, for with it were entrenched the high ideals and standards that I pass on to you, and that we once promised to uphold. This promise is now fulfilled.
